He thru-hike three times - the last ending just a few weeks before his 80th birthday. He was just a fantastic man - so full of life and joy. This is a link to his journal from the second thru-hike and it is well worth taking the time to read http://www.trailjournals.com/earlshaffer/ J. R. "Model T" Tate - J.R. now has three Appalachian Trail thru-hikes under his belt and is currently doing number four at the ripe old age of 86. His first was in 1990. He returned to the A.T. twice more, in 1994 & 1998; and, he hiked the 500-mile Colorado Trail (summer 2001) & Vermont's 270-mile Long Trail (fall 2003). Model T's current hike is raising money to build a homeless shelter in Clarksville, TN. The man has an unconquerable spirit. This is his current trail journal: http://www.trailjournals.com/modelt/ Bob and Pat Peoples - owners of the Kincora Hostel in Hampton TN. Bob is a wealth of trail knowledge and one of the most inventive fellows I've ever met. Pat eoples and Miss Janet (Erwin TN hostel) jointly hold the title of best trail MaMa's Scott 'One-Leg' Rogers - this man hiked all but 200 miles of the Appalachian Trail with one leg in 2004. He was my inspiration to get out try this even though I have some serious leg injuries. One-Leg is a courageous man who is a joy to talk with. This is link to his trail journal http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=2216 M. J. 'Eb' ' Nimblewill Nomad' Eberhart - A man that has been hiking nearly non-stop since 1998. This humble and unassuming man will share his knowledge and intuitive understanding of overcoming trail difficulties with anyone in need. A former heart patient, he proved that changing your lifestyle can free you from the need for many medical interventions.” 9:14:07 AM 4/23/06 “Hey, bearmagnet, was that chica chopping down trees at the time ::: big evil grin :::” 9:23:31 AM 4/23/06 “Back in the early 1990's I met David Lee Roth (of Van Halen fame) at Joshua Tree National Park. He was (maybe still is) an avid rock climber. Pretty good at it, too.” 10:10:55 AM 4/23/06 “i mis-understood the question. i thought it was just limited to tt'ers.” 10:53:48 AM 4/23/06 “Sorry, I didn't mean to limit the five memorable trail characters to members here.
