I haven't bought a CD in years. I listen to lots of sports radio when I'm in the car and am behind on the times. Help me pick out some tunes to updgrade things a bit. I've historically listened to classic rock and need to branch out.

Likes:
Classic Rock (Clapton, etc)
Bob Dylan
Lyle Lovett
Some bluegrass (Nickle Creek)
You get the picture.

Things I've heard that I might like:
I've heard a very little bit of Black Eyed Peas and liked it
I like what little of the Latin influenced music I've heard (Marc Anthony?)

Dislikes:
Rap

Basically, if I went in a music store I'd come out with something I already know. That's not the point. I want to branch out.

Help this rhythmless white boy branch out.

seriously, there's been very little that excites me musically in a long while. i mostly just cycle through my same ol' favorites.
i think it's just part of gettin old DH.
as far as the latin thing, i kinda like shakira. i think it's cause i know what she looks like though. once you see her shake those hips, it's hard not too enjoy listening to her songs for some reason.

VH1's show where they visit celeb's houses went to Shakira's house. Nice.

I think the age thing is part of it too, like you say. My prob is that in high school I listed to late 60's early 70's music. By now that music is going on 40 years old. I gotta branch out fo shizzle.

I believe you two are looking for the guilty pleasures thread. Michelle Branch and Kelly Clarkston? Really? And you guys are heteros right?

Anyhow, now that I'm done straightening out those two Mo's...Dayhiker you absolutely MUST get the sountrack to Rent CD.

sadly, DH saying "knock up the wife" seems more out of place to me than zac calling me an old fart. sigh.

i'm not really old, but i know exactly what yer saying DH. i was mostly a classic rock guy and 80's. i fell out of style musically by the time nirvana/grunge was peaking

I am an old headbanger who also liked more traditional 70s rock. My fav album of all time is Van Halen's 1st album Van Halen. What I listen to these days if I can't find some good smoking 70s tunes are bands like:

Linkin Park
System of a Down
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nickelback
Flyleaf (possibly cus I think the lead singer is so damn hot. I'm so sick, infected with )
My Chemical Romance
Fall Out Boy
Gorillaz
Godsmack
BuckCherry (crazy #&%!$)
Slipknot
Evenescence
Green day
Avenged Sevenfold
Korn
Papa Roach
...
and others like that

Phoenix is good...you can watch/listen to a video:

And another all-time fave is Esthero, Breath From Another...it's from 1998, but better than the one that came out last year.

And of course, Kelly Clarkson! :-D

sacco - I haven't checked it out yet. I'll do that now. I will fess up to going to a Motley Crue concert in the 9th grade. GNR opened up for them and it was before anyone had heard of GNR. We all thought they sucked and then 2 months later they were huge. I did like U2 from the 80's, but that was one of the few ones. I was partial to the Robert Palmer video though.

hyway - I know what causes it, just thought it was neat that it happened. Dang, you're a head banger aren't ya?

lyra - I'll check those out too.

DH, I just picked up Springsteen's new one yesterday. Judging from your tastes, you may enjoy this one. It's the Pete Seeger sessions CD. I didn't expect to like it this much, but the arrangements on these songs are phenomenal!

Also, not sure if you can get this in your average record store, but a new artist I saw last week has me floored. It's the John Ginty Band (CD is Firside Live - double CD) on Shark Attack label. Ginty is a grammy nominee. Played with Santana on the album he put out in 2002. Also played with Sheryl Crow, Jewel and a few other big names. He plays the Hammond B-3 organ and this guy is the real deal. There's national potential here. The music is reminiscent of Santana and some of the driving Allman Brothers sound.

Just a few suggestions...

Lately I've been liking:
Rock:
The Killers
Franz Ferdinand

Marc Broussard
Brandi Carlile

Newgrassy/rock
Ryan Shupe and the rubberband
The Duhks

American Roots
Old Crow Medicine Show
All of Johnny Cash's "American" recordings

If you dig Latin stuff skip the prepackaged American massmarketed Latina-on-a-stick and go for the real thing.
Buena Vista Social Club. Basicly it's a collection of Cuban master musicians. Great stuff.

And suprisingly enough BarlowGirl, a Christain girl band who can actually rock.

Robert Randolph and The Family Band
They are like a cross between SRV and Sly and The Family Stone.....kinda happy but not too happy.
Randolph plays a 13-string pedal steel the way Stevie Ray might have played it.....incredible chops!
This dude plays his instrument the way Jerry Lee played the piano......INSANELY!!
He kicks out the chair and dances while playing!!
He also plays six-string guitar and jams with others doing great renditions of Jimi Hendrix songs.

Blackie And The Rodeo Kings
Canada's greatest country rock band......just ask Helinka!!

Sue Foley
From Toronto, age 36, 5' 2" and cute as a button.
She plays acoustic country blues and a mean-as-hell Pink Paisley Telecaster through a Fender Pro Reverb with no effects.....pure Telecaster twang and growl!
She is a W.C. Handy award winner who has done the Austin, Texas thang.
I sat about eight feet from her......I had my foot on the stage in a small joint in Pa.

Ana Popovic
From Belgrade and another knockout player and looker.....28-30 years old.
This blues chick plays soul, R&B, raw blues(I love the pictures of her sweatin' on the Stratocaster!!) and kinda jazzy style too.
Ana's website plays her albums and has pictures, too!!

http://www.anapopovic.com/
Czech it out!!
No wait, she is Serbian!!

How about Government Mule/Warren Haynes??

Yesterday while driving I heard The Mule playing "What Is Hip?", a Tower Of Power song.

I recognised the song in a few seconds and when Warren "Soul Man" Haynes started singing I was knocked out.
Luckily I maintained control of the car!!
He had no horns with him and a Hammond organ and bass and drums and of course his hot-hot guitar!!!

"What Is Hip" is one of my all-time favorite songs and Warren Haynes did it justice!!

I love his song, "Soul Shine"!

Treebeard's suggestion wasn't an option on BMG. Neither was lyra's. I did add a John Prine album to the list.

HPM - which Johnny Cash album do you recommend. I watched the movie this past weekend and really enjoyed it.

MarkO - I'll look into that one. Is it a Motown sounds?

Depends DH.
If you want just Johnny pick up a best of cd.
The American recordings are mostly covers but damn what covers they are. Says a lot about Johnny what songs he chose to cover.

I particularly like the last one I think it was #4. #3-solitary man is good too.
