Thermarest Chair kit or the like...

Alrighty, all you engineer, do-it-yourself types... time to come up with a Thermarest chair kit. (Since I lost mine, seemingly, phhht!)

I can't help but think you could make a very lightweight one out of the same material as Tarptents (which is what?)... or even from mesh, with lightweight fabric in appropriate places.

Maybe something besides straps and buckles could be used to make the back stay up? (short bungees that might hook to the bottom and go around the back through a channel? or hook to convenient trees? Something making use of trekking poles? Or tent poles?)

And would you put the removeable stays on each side? My chair kit had 4 of them.

Just trying to think outside the box here...

Actually, I am using a mummy-shaped InsulMat, so could get by with something less than a rectangular shape. I'd expect to fold the bottom back to get more cushiness. lol

NOW, SET THOSE POPCAN STOVES TO THE SIDE AND GET TO WORK ON SOMETHING THAT CAN REALLY HELP A TIRED BACKPACKER!! ;-P

Now do you lose a chair kit????
Nevermind, this is lizs we we dealing with.

I do not think any lightweight fabric will hold up to lizs.
lizs can tear up an anvil. ;-)

just copy the one that was made by the thermarest people. i have one of those. use 1.1oz/yd silnylon for fabric and lightweight webbing for the staps. use pultruted carbon fiber for the poles. it would be very light. sadly, however, sewing is NOT something i am good at.

Does any ultralight company make one? Although I suppose it would go against every ultralight, minimalist bone they have. LOL!

I absolutely LOVE my thermarest chair. A buddy got it for me for x-mas...I cannot find the words to describe what it does for a tired back after a long day of hiking. It is well worth the extra weight. OMG. Orgasmic.

i made a copy of the thermarest chairkit a couple years ago using silnylon. it was nice while it lasted...the lightweight fabric has worn through in parts of the seat area.
i guess it's still useable but i'm afraid i might puncture my sleep pad now that i can see how little protection the chair provides.

is the insulmat fabric strong for use in a chairkit? it's not the same stuff as thermarest fabric

Lizs - you want a new kit? I can check around and see what some of the other people are unloading. What width pad you own?

Beware of using a chair kit in bear country, spill some found on it and it will need to hung in the bear bag.
