Gem is still on for this and I'm shootin' for midnight, or there abouts, Friday 30 June.

“I'm a little concerned that it might split while it dries if i peel it to early and I'm thinking that by leaving the bark on until its dried that the risk of splitting is diminished.”

The slower it dries the less likely it is to warp or split.

I have made hiking sticks from straight, skinny spruce or fir trees.

Leaving the bark on they dry slower and remain straight.

Skinning them right away its easier to remove the bark but they then warp.”
