Buddha, I'm all in favor of an employer paying someone a fair wage, etc., what I'm not in favor of is a union having so much power/control over the employer that they help drive the employer out of business!

It's a question of extremes, we all know labor union formation was a necessary step in our society when they were first formed due to the extreme greed/selfishness of employers. Unfortunately, the pendulum swung too far in the opposite direction.

Personal story - the most admired person in my life was my maternal grandfather. In the 1930's he ended up in jail because he as fighting for the right to form a union for the railroad he then worked for. This was at a time when he had 5 young children at home to feed, but he felt that what he was fighting for was more important and a question of "right vs. wrong".

I remember speaking with him in the late 1960's, he had long been retired, and by then he had become a Republican and thought that the unions he had fought so hard for had "crossed the line" and he was no longer supportive of them.

“Bethlaham Steel went out of business because they couldn't compete with inferior steel coming out of China, and your government failed to enact tarrifs that would allow a more level playing field. Further, the company lacked vision, and finally, the costs of healthcare went through the roof due to privatization of the healthcare system, which allowed yet another industry to fleece the public. Workers wanted a piece of the pie, yet nobody is out there blaming anything on lack of tarrifs, selling our jobs to red china, etc.

The "me, me, me, me, me" mentality of many folks in this country WILL catch up to them one day. Karma is one hell of a donkey punch dude.”

BB, I agree with evereything you've said here. I wasn't inferring that the ONLY reason they went under was the Union, just that it was a contributing factor. The others you mentioned are all also factors.

I also agree with your "me, me, me, me" statement, that, in fact, is the very issue we're discussing - the greed & "me, me me" mentality of employers is what motivated the formation of Unions, however the "me, me, me" mentality that the Unions exhibited whenever they gained so much power was equally a sad chapter in our country's evolution!

Two wrongs don't make a right! :)

Many unions did cross the line in the 70's, but it was the leadership who crossed the line, not the concept or the vast majority of members.

Currently, since our politicians don't do squat for working people, and republicans do everything they can to make working people as poor as possible, yet fat anough to keep them from forming a mass uprising, there is a need more than ever to unionize people so they can collectively baragin for thier rights, and influence the people who allegedly represent the PEOPLE, not the companies.

But then again, screw it, you fascists are right, make less money, and spend what little you have on crap at walmart. It's the American way, afterall, right!

Buddha Bear and others - I have obtained many, quality items at Walmart. And, recently, after I was unable to pick up some pictures from a Walmart in N.C., someone called them from a local Walmart, talked to them and the pictures were mailed to me at my P.O. Box Address, free of any charge, including the one for processing!

This year, my previous employer, a supermarket, has gone crazy with food price increases. They have forced me to seek lower prices elsewhere, like at Walmart.

I was replying to your thread above, the one in which you edited and deleted everything inserting "censored!".

Who do you think pays for those higher wages? The same people who are getting paid "more" money.

I remember watching the news back when all the union towns were drying up because the steel mills closed. There was this whiner 25 yo kid standing next to his brand new top model pickup parked in front of his big ass 2 story house complaining that he was going to "lose all this". Hell he shouldn't have had all that at 25 to lose. I don't want to have to pay extra for something so some young kid can gain in a couple years what most people take half a lifetime to build.

BTW, buddha, your comment about beating me down sounds an awful lot like the German Workers Party. Are you a fascist?

Around here, Walmart owns gas stations, where I buy gas....the banks, where I got my house loan, grocery stores, where I buy my food, Liquor stores, for my beer, car lots, auto parts stores, which I shop at...I do all this because I am selfish and want the lowest prices.....I'm glad they're there. They even employ some of my family and friends and I know people that have gotten somewhat wealthy from investing in Walmart.

That's about all I have to say about that.....

At the time they unionized they were paid pretty nice wages.

less than 10 years later....they had ZIP ZERO NADA drivers in the UNION working for the company....(LOL) oh but the union still got their pound of flesh in dues.

Here's a new press release about state of california healthcare costs... I'm posting because it's very similar to what I've been saying about Unions... all these promises were made to employees and now the piper has to be paid... meaning that you now (whether you're the State or the Employer-Union) have to pay everyone's insurance for the next 50 years, yet those people, since they're not employees, are contributing NOTHING to your day-to-day business operations!

Report: State Faces $48 Billion in Unfunded Retiree Health Costs

California has not set aside funds to cover an expected $48 billion in retiree health expenses over the next 30 years. The state pays retiree costs on an annual basis, but new accounting rules require public agencies to disclose future costs. Sacramento Bee, Ventura County Star.

Walmart is not teh reason we buy goods from china. We buy goods from china because the products made in America cost to damn much. Cut back on regulations, taxes, fees etc, and we will compete with China. Or not, but don't blame walmart for supplying what the people want.

Down the street from me growing up was a typewriter factory. Then a Wal-Mart opened up across the highway. At that time Wal-Mart was advertising "Bring it Back to the USA!" and those typewriters were so featured. Then the typewriter factory closed saying they were moving production to Mexico. It took a while for the "Bring it Back to the USA!" signs to disappear from those products in the Wal-Mart across the highway. But disappear they eventually did, from not only those but all others in the store. It took much longer for the "Bring it Back to the USA!" slogan to disappear from the mud flaps of Wal-Mart's many trucks but it's been a little while since I've seen one. Must be a moral in that story somewhere.

The moral is, the company was shamelessly using our country to promote it's profits. When they duped enough people to buy at WalMart, poof, a new business model, but the ole' red, white and blue colors of the store haven't changed.

The moral is, nothing is sacred in the path to thier profits; your country, your community, and lastly, your job.

I can't remember the last time I was in a WalMart.

Wait, it was in Herkimer, New York.
We met Sacco there and went in to buy beer.

The place smelled like a cross between popcorn and cotton candy, kinda puke-ous.

Or maybe, just maybe, some smart business type guy at corporate figured out that if they offer products at a price lower than anyone else the buying public will beat a path to your door.

Naw! Couldn't be simple economics! It's because they're veil!
