Your first hike should be to the San Diego Zoo. I love that place, best zoo in the world, and, if you're gonna do t all you should wear your hiking shoes! :)

Hi embear, welcome! (all Californians aren't crazy, incidentialy). I'm in Northern CA but travel a lot... especially up & down West Coast, San Diego to Seattle!

All BS aside, the San Diego zoo is indeed one of the most incredible places to visit you'll ever find.

I posted this on another thread, but, since you're moving out here I'll also mention again...

One of the best days of your life will be to drive up 101 to Monterey, rent a kayak, and go kayaking among the sea otters in Monterey Bay. There are no words to describe that experience. And, of course, plan on a full day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium while you're there!

And, Oh Yeah... we have Backpacking out here too! There's this place called the "Sierra Nevada"... :)

Stovie, yes! Come on out! I am moving for a variety of reasons, but mainly personal. ;)Plus, Denver isnt the best place for me career-wise.

Wanderer.....thanks! I am planning on buying a sea kayak when i get out there...Monterey Bay sounds awesome! I wanna kayak to the Channel Islands as well. And of course, I cant wait to backpack Yosemite and Kings Canyon and all of the Sierras!

“Don't they issue you a gun and an English/Spanish dictionary when you move to SD?”

Now why in the world would we do give you a dictionary? That would imply we expect our residents to know how to READ.. isn't that pretty exclusionary, you ELITIST SCUM!

Don't you know that there's a state agency, paid for by the good citizens of California, that will provide you with an interpretrer? Why should we want anyone to be self-reliant? ISN'T THAT WHAT GOVERNMENT IS HERE FOR - TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR EVERY WHIM & ASK NOTHING IN RETURN?

OK, so maybe I exaggerated just a little bit. But... did you know that in California there's a law about providing interpreters in public schools for anyone of any ethnic background so that NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND! And.. it has been documented that in some San Francusco school districts the state is mandated to provide interpreters / reading assistants IN 44 DIFERENT LANGUAGES!

Gee, I wonder what that costs?

OK, Yes, I got carried away... sorry... I just saw my pay-stub & was reviewing deductions :(

“Damn Wanderer. I bet your taxes are way up there.”

Well, this is a socialist state, and we can't have any of our residents (legal or not, tax-paying or not) be the slightest bit "slighted", can we?

Have you NO social conscience, DNB? Have you NO appreciation for the damage we'd do to the self-esteem of these scumbags (oops, I mean these poor, unfortunate, deprived, prejudiced-against souls) if we were to ask them to learn to SPEAK ENGLISH, GET A JOB, or PAY TAXES?!

Boy, some of you hard-core right wingers... sheesh, one would think we all have to pay our own way in life, listening to you extremists!

Hey Embear... visit this place before you buy your sea-kayak! http://montereybaykayaks.com/

It's the place Irent from when I'm down there, I'm on their email distribution lst & I know they sell some of their rental gear every year & replace it, seems like they have really good deals, and, quite honestly, I'm not sure what damage one could do to a sea kayak that they have right on the beach... there are no transport problems, etc.

just a thought for you... I have no vested interest in this company, they've just always treated me fairly.

I lived in SD ten years, but now in Tucson, Az--I know you are not asking about hikes but thought I'd put my .02 in.
In winter, Anza Borrego Desert about two hours east of town is a hidden gem, pretty stark desert and you'll like it or you won't.
Great dayhikes, some backpacking with care on the water situation.
Unfortunately the Lagunas and Cyamacas (sp?) have had some recent burns so don't know the status of hiking trails there. If Garnet Peak is accessible in Lagunas take that short trail, great views from sharp summit, of desert floor.

Anza Borrego fave's---Whale Mtn, Rockhouse loop, Sheep, Cougar, Indian canyons, Villager and Rabbit Peaks, Rattlesnake loop.
Mud Caves
One of my old faves is now off limits, the Carrizo Gorge.
You'll also be not too far from Death Valley Panamint side, some great stuff there too. Joshua Tree, etc.
Good luck and have fun!!!

Yep, a few TTr's in So Cal
Finally got fed up with that 'trash-talkin' TT crowd in the eastern US, huh?

As RedRoxx44 mentions, Anza Borrego Desert State Park is great in the winter and spring. The Cuyamaca and LAguna Mtns in eastern SD county are nice 'hills'; also the Santa Rosas a little farther north.

About two hours north on I-15 are the San Jacinto Mtns (topped by 10,800 ft Mt. San Jacinto) and San Bernardino Mtns (11,500 ft Mt. San Gorgonio). Both have great pine forests and lots of hiking trails. And don't forget the San Gabriel Mtns north of Los Angeles.

East of those Mtns is the Mojave desert and Joshua Tree Natl Park - like Anza Borrego its a great winter time destination.

Farther north are Death Valley Natl Park, the Sierra Nevada Mtns, Inyo & White Mtns, and more.

(the list goes on, but that should be enough to whet yout appetite for now).

And before I forget: WE HAVE REAL SURF HERE ALONG THE PACIFIC COAST!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know why Em is moving. I might even be indirectly responsible. ;D

I was just thinking about you today, too, wondering how "IT" was going. I am so happy for you!!!! One of these days I will be out there to visit you since there will be one more person on my list of people to visit in SD.

I have no knowledge of So Cal except that Gem and I had a blast at Lone Pine/Mt. Whitney area and at Joshua Tree. Way worth checking out both places.

Thanks everyone! At first, I was a little concerned about the backpacking possibilities, especially since I'm coming from Denver, but after some research, it looks like there is a ton of stuff out there. Plus, I can do it year round, where I cant where I am now. And, theres the desert and the ocean...

Yes Ruby, I've been thinking about you too! Things are good, and i owe a lot to you! :)

we went to SD in february and loved it. the zoo rocked; the beaches were awesome.
even the illegal mexicans seemed cooler in SD.

death valley was pretty neat, but a sandstorm blew in while we were there, preventing hiking or horseback riding like we were planning.

There are a few TTers in San Diego.

Lots of good info mentioned already. You are not too far away from 10,000+ ft. hiking all year round. The deserts can be awesome as well. Anza Borrego rocks in the right times of the year.

In So Cal, I prefer the San Gorgonio Wilderness myself (the Sierras being the hiking mecca in CA, of course) http://www.sgwa.org. I spend a lot of time there. I ran into wingding and trailtrekker there last weekend while on patrol as a volunteer ranger! (L-R: Phil, trailtrekker, wingding).

San Diego is a long way from the Sierra - probably a good idea to get into cycling or sea kayaking. In the winter Anza Borrego is okay and the San Jacintos are just wonderful when the weather is cool.
