My new mechanic took the time to explain what the problem was, what needed to be done and exactly how he would do it. The old shop gave me a claim ticket and said they'd call me when it's done. Eventually I'd like to be able to build my own wheels but I know that's a long ways off for me. I have to learn the basics first.

I never built wheels, but did almost everything else on my mountain bikes at some point. One thing you'll want is a workstand to hold the bike. What I do like about road riding is that there's so much less work to do. Mountain biking requires much more maintenance. These days I'm not into spending a lot of time working on bikes.

Funny you should say that because it seems like I've had nothing but trouble from the road bike but the entry level Gary Fisher MTB I've had for some 8 years has been flawless and nearly maintenance free. It's never even seen the inside of a bike shop.

So far I have 1155 miles on my road bike and all I had to do was clean and lube chain as needed, air up the tires as needed and keep the bike clean. I took it in at 300 miles for a free check from the shop where I bought it, but it didn't look to me like he had to do much to it. Just check the wheels for true and run it through the gears on the workstand. It was shifting fine so it really didn't need much tweaking.

Mountain bikes take a beating and the dirt and mud will wear the parts out faster.

Just four short hours after finally getting my bike from the shop I slid it under a car and watched as it ran over my front wheel. FUBARed.

My plan to convert the Trek 700 to a single speed has gone from simply throwing some parts together to buying a whole new bike. I'm looking to buy a cheap single speed beater and then upgrade the components until I have something that looks like this...

I've decided to take the Trek and make that my wrenching bike and convert it into a really light trail bike for adventure racing next year. Now, where do I get the money for all this stuff?
