Land and Water Fund only Gets 2.5% in 2007:
From the LWCF website:

"The Land and Water Conservation Fund Act gives the authorization to provide up to $900 million every year to purchase lands and waters for your benefit:

For recreation.
For scenic landscapes.
For wildlife habitat.
For clean water.
For your quality of life."

Of the $900 million available, the 2007 proposal is to spend only $25,075,000 for the national forests, some additional money for parks, refuges and to states and localities! And thats to bad because of speaking of gone forever, once these potential conservation properties are subdivided for residential development, the amount of money needed to revert them to conservation increases 10 times or more.

From the Wilderness Society website:

Despite the president's campaign promise to "fully fund" the popular Land and Water Conservation Fund, the blueprint released today extends the pattern of deep cuts to the program seen in previous Bush Administration budgets. In FY 2006, the president requested only $131 million. For FY 2007, the Administration reduced that by more than 35 percent, to approximately $84 million. LWCF is authorized by Congress to receive up to $900 million annually.

It's about time.

We need to put the power and responsibility on the states.

Sarge, you should be pleased to know that the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund will spend more this year in North Carolina for conservation land acquisition than the federal government will spend in all the 50 states.

I am very glad. Hopefully the taxpayers of NC are as well.

I read the posts almost daily on the North Carolina Conservative website and have yet to see anyone complain about the state land buying efforts and if anybody would 'gripe' about the effort, those folks would.

Such expenditures are considered to be an investment in the future quality of life and economy in this state

and lobbying efforts are underway to further increase the level of funding.

Hey lonesurveyor,

Back in graduate school, I produced a documentary on water (growing concerns of fresh drinking water, pollution, yada yada yada) and we interviewed Marc Basinight on what your state has done with its water saving program. He gave us a great interview and bought us lunch at his restraunt there in Kill Devil Head there.

Prominent conservative writer's opinion of LWCF:
"...a bill that would confiscate $450-million per year for five years from offshore oil revenue, for the Land and Water Conservation Fund. This has become a slush-fund that the feds use to provide grants to states and to environmental organizations to buy up private property, that all too often, gets added to the bloated government land inventory."

The word is not confiscate, the word is allocate and that was the intent of the LWCF, to get a portion of oil lease revenues and $450 million a year would be great.

Confiscate sounds like the right word to me.
