This is my plan.... I will park at the Scenic Route 150 Trail head for the North South Trail which will be on the left side if the road and an overflow parking area on the right. Hike in approx 1/2 mile to an intersection a rock carne....... which will take you to North Fork Cranberry Trail if you go LEFT OR turn RIGHT and continue on to North South Trail to Williams River Trail. GO STRAIGHT AHEAD do not turn left or right. Continue straight ahead at the intersection for North South Tail headin kinda west. I will be camped within 1 1/2 mile from the Parking area or within 1 mile on the North South Trail after the rock Carne. give me a Trail talk yell. I will have plenty of goodies..........

You want to see the area I will be there...........................................................................................................................................................THE FRIDGE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Park along scenic route 150 at the North Sout Trail head, there is a small 2 to 3 car parking spot on the left but look across to the right where there is a big gravel parking area. I will be approx 1/2 on the North South Trail near the trail intersection where the North South Trail splits to the right. I drive a Blue Nissan Frontier and should be parked at the left side trail head, I have Trail Talk sticker in the rear window, and don't nobody take it off.........hehehh.......We can decide which direction we want to go with a group discussion depending on mileage and river crossings.....Bring your sandles or crocks we will most likely be crossing small rivers approx 1 to 3 feet deep. ye haaaaaaaaaaa

anyone needing more info please e mail at refrigeratorkid@wmconnect.com and I will send you my phone number or give me your and I will call you.

Spam iffin you still going I can meet you and give you a lift. I will be leaving Mt Rogers area approx 6 am thursday and will be arriving at Cranberry Glades by 10:30 am

Make a note there is no water availiable at the North South Trail camp spot so bring water for the evening and Breakfast, we will be near water from there on.........

all you want to beeeeeeeeeesssssssssss get your pack and lets go..........how about you Yankees yo Yankees MARKO, and the other yanks............

Ok...
Will know for sure by tomorrow night, but as of now, it looks like I may be arriving after dark on Friday -- this could get interesting; I may have to break out my PhantomLostSoul handle again...

As I understand, y'all don't like to blaze your trails down there -- still haven't figured out why, but hey, when in Rome, do as the Romans, no?

It's looking like a 6.5-7 hour drive for me, so I'm gonna see if I can get the day off on Friday and try to get down there before dark -- will probably make things a lot easier for this Yank that ain't never been there before.

BTW, anyone going down from the DC/PA area (or points Northeast thereof) that wants to carpool? Email me at phntomsoul@gmail.com

Have I forgotten anything? Oh yeah, um...YEEHAW!

Wow...
Google Maps is telling me to go to I-79 via Morgantown and Clarkburg and then approach the place via US-19. This route is long and forever, and what's worse is that they're saying to expect it to take 10 hours...

That said, does anyone know if there might be a quick way across the mountains to this place off of I-81 in the Staunton/Lexington, VA area? I could there in about 5 hours, or maybe from I-64?
PhantomSoul
11:28:53 PM
6/18/06

How does I-64 to Lewisburg, WV, to US-219 to WV-39 to WV-150 sound? I'm trying to find an approach from I-81 and I'm thinking that, even though I-64 is a bit south of Cranberry, it should be way faster in crossing the mountains than some 2-lane road where I could get stuck behind Grandpa Slow-poke or a dump truck (a la WV-55 to Dolly Sods)
PhantomSoul

6/18/06

Yo Phantom Soul:

I-81 south to Staunton,
Rt 250 west to Monterey,
Rt 220 south to Vanderpool,
Rt 84 south/west to Frost,
Rt 92 south/west to Minnehaha Springs(no, really!),
Rt 39 west to Marlinton,
Rt 219 south to Mill Point,
Rt 39 west to Route 150, the Scenic Highway

This is a pretty good route and not as complicated as it looks.

PhantomSoul - the way you described is the way I went last month and is probably the way I will go this time too since I feel it is easier to do that the other approaches.

Fridge - is this trail head the same one we parked at last time?

Yeah, but you'll miss Minnehaha Springs.
MarkOTheBeast

6/19/06

That's alright; Minnehaha Springs is expendible. It appears that West Virginia does not like to build the extra passing lane when an otherwise 2-lane road goes up a hill, and I've gotten stuck behind slow vehicles one too many times there...

That said, I-64 to Lewisburg and US-219 sound like the way to go. I'll be leaving Jersey first thing early Friday morning to arrive sometime after lunch. Anything more specific is anyone's guess...

When you go to the Trips page where this trip has it's roots .duuuuuuu the dates are 6-22-06 so I thought this was on a thursday so I make arrangements and now I am hearing post that everyone comming will be at the designated Trail head camp spot on Friday night, so lets do a roll call and update me as to when everyone expects to be arriving.

I will still be in the cranberry glades area on thursday if the official date is friday I will party by myself thursday night.

A table for one can be fun, no?

Ok, so here's my plan -- I'm busting out of Jersey first thing early Friday morning and getting there when I get there. Hopefully it'll still be daylight, as those unblazed West Virginia trails are a PITA to follow after dark -- especially unfamiliar ones.

Anyways, I'll take the I-64/US-219 route, so I'm figuring about 7 hours or so which should put me there sometime after lunch on Friday.

Trip starts on Friday, not Thursday...a year ago when I posted the dates I had planned on making this years trip longer...starts Friday, ends Sunday.

Thursday sounds good to me Fridge - good chance I'll see you there sometime Thursday afternoon.

As for those coming in after dark - the only tricky part of this is right at the beginning - the trail itself goes left after leaving the small parking area - there is a bulletin board on the edge of a field that you will pass after about 100 feet or so but it is not visible from the beginning of the trail - once past the board the trail is fairly obvious - the cairn at the trail intersection is very obvious and the trails past the cairn are probably easy to follow based on what I saw there last month. Note there are signs at the trail intersections indicating which trail goes where but depending on which map you are looking at the names may be slightly different than the maps - as I recall there was a difference in where the North Fork Tr. and the North South Tr. were shown on the map vs the signs. Just remember to go straight through the intersection then another 1.5 miles to get to the camp site.

Fridge - here is a topozone link to the area - would you please click on the map where you will be camped then copy the resulting link to this thread so I can be sure where I am going?

Looks like the trail follows some sort of ridge -- is it woodded? Exposed?

After the intersection and for a while that trail runs through almost pure red spruce before it drops into hardwoods.

I remember seeing a site about where Poppa Fridge is talkin' about.

isn't the trail intersection of the North South Tr. and the North Fork Tr. right where the cairn is? That is to say 0.5 from the trailhead parking at the first intersection reached? If so the I agree it is easy to find.

OK I'm leaving in about a half hour - see ya'll there - if Friday campsite is somewhere other than near the cairn at the intersection of North Fork Tr. and North-South Tr. I'll leave a note at the cairn.
