August in Emmigrant WildernessView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 5 of 5 messages posted.
Any wise words about Emmigrant Wilderness? “I am hiking in early August out of the Kennedy Meadows trailhead. The main trail goes southeast to Kennedy Meadow. But, I was planning on doing a loop by starting southwest toward Deer Lake. I noticed on a map in the Sierra North book that there is an unmaintained trail heading in that direction. I am planning on going to Deer Lake first, and then hiking east toward Emmigrant Meadows, Cow Lake, etc from there, and then coming out on the main trailhead from the major trail that goes southeast/northwest. If anyone one has any wise words about this plan, please post. Also, if anyone would like to join me, I can be reached at sheldonelias@earthlink.net.” 10:56:06 AM 6/20/06 “I've looked at similar routes on maps before - sounds excellent. If you've hiked in Emigrant before, you'll already know that you don't need much in the way of a trail with all of the granite there. Cross country travel is quite easy. I may be heading up to Emigrant 4th of July weekend, pending a phone call to the rangers to inquire about snow coverage....” 12:06:45 PM 6/20/06 “I will add that in lesser traveled wilderness areas such as Emmigrant, Mokelumne, Carson Iceberg, unmaintained trails are just that....unmaintained and rarely traveled. Know how to read a map! BowlderMan, you should be fine July 4th weekend. I just returned yesterday from a couple trips. One 5-day Mokelumne wilderness trip where I was rudely reminded of why I don't go there anymore (gain 1K, loose 1K, gain 1K back again...). There was always snow in the woods. If you were in trees, you were in snow regardless of north/south facing landscapes. Here are a few pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() What part of "I got sore paws" don't you understand? ”1:37:36 PM 6/20/06 “Hey, thanks, flipster! Those pics tell me that it should definitely be doable in a couple weeks. I'll still call the FS to make sure the roads don't have gigantic trees or landslides blocking them or something....” 2:24:40 PM 6/20/06
