LEBANON — An Army reservist who served two tours in Afghanistan is suing the Wilson County school district, claiming it ended his contract to teach high school classes because of his extended service.

Capt. John Parker taught criminal justice and coached wrestling at Wilson Central High School and said he was recently told less than a month after returning from deployment that his contract would not be renewed for the coming school year.

"It just made me feel that the people I was fighting for were the exact people that were taking my job from me," Parker told WTVF-TV in Nashville.

The jobs of reservists and guardsmen are protected under federal law when they return from deployments.

Schools Director Jim Duncan said Parker's contract was not renewed because there weren't enough students signed up for his class.

"He was not fired," Duncan said, although he acknowledged that Parker's deployments were a concern. "It was like we got these classes going and you're supposed to be the teacher."

"Could he have said something to his superiors?" Duncan told the television station. "'Look, I really need to get back there. If everything is equal, I need to get back there (to Wilson Central High School) January 3rd because that's when my class starts and I need to be with those kids for the full semester.'"

When WTVF asked Duncan if he thought Parker should have made his teaching position a priority, Duncan said, "Firmly. Yes."

Parker's suit seeks his reinstatement at Wilson Central High School.

"He chose to risk his life. He didn't choose to risk his job," said Parker's attorney, Gary Blackburn.

My international conglomerate employeer who shall remain nameless is very reservest unfriendly. The corporation employees well over 10,000 people and can afford to be reservist friendly. Upon reading my resume the personell director asked many question about my military commitment. At that time I think there were 6 reservist employed on our site of 500 plus employees. Now we have no reservist employed. Nobody dares sign up once hired and those commited are simply not hired. The pay is really good, we are non-union and nobody is stupid enough to raise a stink about it.”

Also, if he'd do any reasearch, which he won't (too stupid/lazy), he'd notice that they all run as independents (typical repub trick).

Further, of all the school admin's I've run across in my time, the only ones who make statements like- "When WTVF asked Duncan if he thought Parker should have made his teaching position a priority, Duncan said, "Firmly. Yes." (i.e., don't take a sick/vacation/military/maternity leave, your job is your life). Another tell-tale sign that he's a right-winger, and that he was hired by right-wingers is his total disregard for the law.

I hope the guy does have a union to represent him. They'll pick up the legal fees, and take the matter to arbitration to get his job back.

I must say this though, right-wingers make me look very good in my job. Their poor, in-your-face, no regard for the law decision making processes have provided me with a Ted Williams type batting average in arbitration cases. It's easy to win when the opposition blatantly breaks the law/rules.
