I saw Lizs post about Karma points on Bacpacker. Anybody know what they are or how they are calculated?

That is basically a system to rank the "trustability" or "usefulness" of a poster. If people think that your post is good, they can give you good kharma. If they think your post is useless, they can take kharma away. Over time you can see if other posters on the board trust you by how much kharma you have.

If, for example, you were to say something like, "George Bush is the best president of our lifetime.", someone like Stovey would give you a karma point. But at the same time usually, someone like Buddha Bear could also give you a bad point. There are all kinds of voting and award points on those types of boards.

They're basiclly suckass points.

"Over time you can see if other posters on the board trust you by how much kharma you have.”

Thank you for not doing that here. Is there such a thing as negative karma? Like if people vote you down to a certain point you're banned and have to come back as a slug? LOL!

Thanks Matt.

It looks like you get a point just for posting now, but that the number can also go up or down based on someone else's rating.

Kind of a "go with the popular opinion" attitude? LOL...Sounds like the Clinton Administration

and we haven't introduced poster ranking here yet....why?????

Only one question, for a few of our beloved posters and I won't mention any names.....can you have -Karma? or do you just stay at "0" which is bad Karma

I dont't think it's such a bad idea if it is implimented carefully, with appropriate controls, and everyone knows how it works.

One thing that is confusing on backpacker is it seems like with Karma levels, the lower the better - but with Karma points, its the higher the better.

I've taken bad TT karma to all the boards I frequent on the internet.

I certainly would not trust someone because they have lots of karma points on the other site.

It's not nice to stereotype, Nigal. ;-)
