In Hawaii? I know there are rats. It just seems so funny to have the food bag hanging out of a tree over my tent while I'm out on a day hike or at the beach...

I'm getting this mental image of a food bag hanging from a palm tree, lol.

You might consider one of the critter sacks. If they are like the squirrels on Cumberland Island they will leap from a branch to get to your bag.

You could act like a Touron & be irresponsible - go ahead & contribute to further degradation of the area you're going to.

I'm guessing there is a reason they want you to hang your food... don't-cha' think??

The most destructive animal I've run into while backpacking and hiking (not counting humans) are mice and other rodents.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

Chipmunks and red squirrels; pure evil gear- chewing-through devil rats.

i have a "rat sack" that I used in the GC. i don't know if it works because none have ever gotten my food. it looks convincing however.

It's a free county.
Hang or not hang as you please.

Most will chose to hang.

I find that using a food bag as a pillow works well.

more importantly, why do you take a tent on a day hike or to the beach?

Actually a Critter sack is a great idea. Where do I find one of those?
And actually I've been told there may be vagrants living in one of the valleys we're headed too. How trustworthy are vagrants? Which brings me to a better question, how safe is leaving my tent and pack while I day hike up to a waterfall, when I'm camped in the remote (but no uninhabited) wilderness?

Vagrants as a rule are very fine people.
Give then a dollar to watch your stuff for you.

How can you be a vagrant in the wilderness? Are these Polynesians Gone Wild.........er...............again? Do you mean other backpackers? Exactly how many street blocks away from the city will your campsite be?

yeah, bm, it is but it's so cute any self-respecting rodent would be sure to drag it someplace to admire privately and bye, bye food!
