On another message board I frequent there is a discussion going on about 'Pro-Death Republicans'.

Any who feel the status-quo frontier mentality of the last couple of centuries can and should be maintained are promoting a world of extreme suffering and death.

XL likes to quote Reagan that there are no limits to growth, XL has written he feels the world is not overpopulated and he does not know that the world cannot continue to grow to even 1 trillion people.

Such are very anti-humanitarian views.

damn that XL, he should have backed the Soviet Union when he had the chance. I suppose he can move to china to assist in the equitable distribution of resources.

Thanks Crash, and it is not the uneven distribution of resources that is the problem it is the uneven distribution of FREEDOM that is the problem.

Hey did anyone see the AP story today about South Africa...? They are starting to censor jokes about the government and mail and e-mail (domestic etc)....LOL GREAT JOB ANTI APARTHEID CROWD. Lots of success and growth since you won.

As for Growth, in a society where people take (don't get scared but BIG word coming here) "responsibility" for their family I find that excess children are controlled by using simple PERSONAL decisions. It is in third world holes and lower income (FREE MONEY) groups that tend to spit them out like rabbits. IF Mr and Mrs A know that THEY are responsible for the raising and training etc of the children they tend to take RESPONSIBILITY for it. Sadly we have taken the MALE out of the picture in the Government FREE MONEY society. With no real responsibility to society the Male is free to pretty much do what they want.
Oh...and in closing...um you do know I volunteer each week with people recovering from Alchohol and Drug Dependency. Yeah it is pretty cool to see someone who has been a slave to SELF learn FREEDOM.

Thanks for the thread Crash....we must have a cup of coffee on the trail one night. I think you will find when we get down to it we want the same thing...just different ways of getting there.

No Crash....but movement from a society of educated people to one where the uneducated are running it on emotion will breed dictatorships every time.
Was Apartheid bad...? YES it takes the natural yearning for human growth and freedom out. But DESTROYING a working system rather than slowly changing it resulted in massive explosions of violence, crime and loss of freedom.
The proper understanding and use of freedom comes through a properly educated society.

With many American crops not producing this year at record levels, with China now a net importer of food, with the increasing demand for croplands and forests to be converted to biofuel production

the only real avenues for redistribution of food and associated resources is to redistribute from and further infringe upon and steal from the remaining natural world.

I am still trying to figure out how XL is supposed to solve the "uneven distribution of resources" problem? Here are the world's largest countries (by land mass).

1. Russia 17,075,400 sq km, (6,592,812 sq miles)
2. Canada 9,330,970 sq km, (3,612,187 sq miles)
3. China 9,326,410 sq km, (3,600,927 sq miles)
4. United States 9.166,600 sq km, (3,539,224 sq miles)
5. Brazil 8,456,510 sq km, (3,265,059 sq miles)
6. Australia 7,617,930 sq km, (2,941,283 sq miles)
7. India 2,973,190 sq km, (1,147,949 sq miles)
8. Argentina 2,736,690 sq km, (1,056,636 sq miles)
9. Kazakhstan 2,717,300 sq km, (1,049,150 sq miles)
10. Sudan 2,376,000 sq km, (917,374 sq miles)

Seems to me Russia, Canada and China have more resources. They should take the lead. Unless XL personnally owns more land mass than those countries.

screw another planet, we'll be better off with cylindrical shaped space colonies. They can provide more space per resources used and can be set to a gravity of our choosing. Plus the zero grave center of a space colony/station has great potential for manufacturing and recreation. Plus we can move the colony toward resources instead of bringing the resources to the colony.

And if you want to colonize another planet, why not go there in generation ships where human society continues with people being born and dying, continueing teh cycle of life as we travel the great distances through space to a planet that has potential to be inhabital

I am sure that will be one suggestion, but if you think that there won't be orbital colony stations around earth by the end of this century (probably much sooner) then you seriously underestimate the desire of your fellow man to separate themselves from the unwashed masses.

Planet Earth is doomed. Some day, and this may be well into the future, but someday we will grow too numerous for Mother Earth to continue to sustain us. We'll either strip her bare or kill off most of us in mutual extinction so that we are back to hunting with spears for our dinner.

Lone surveyor is right about having to take from whats left of the natural world until there is no more natural world.

100 years ago ....

The average life expectancy in the US was 47.

Only 14% of the homes in the US had a BATHTUB.

Only 8% of the homes had a TELEPHONE.

A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11.

There were only 8,000 CARS in the US and only 144 miles of paved ROADS.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

The average wage in the US was $0.22/hour.

The average US worker made between $200-$400/year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000/year, a dentist $2,500/year, a veterinarian between $1,500-$4,000/year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000/year.

What was happening in 1806.
Napoleon runs rampant in Europe: the Holy Roman Empire is disbanded, Prussia defeated, Russia close to defeat. The British Royal Navy is holding its own but cannot win on its own. Russia is also fighting a separate war against Turkey. These wars are still fought much as they have been for centuries - brass cannon, brightly coloured uniforms and formal battle lines.

Webster publishes his first dictionary, the American continent is being explored (Pike's Peak is named in November and Lewis and Clarke are on the way home). Rail transport is in its infancy, being pioneered by Great Britain, which is in the throes of Industrial Revolution.

Education is still limited to a very select group of people, and there is still much genuine and abject poverty in "developed" countries such as Britain. France's revolution was not so long ago, and the aristocracy all over Europe are still casting nervous glances at the peasantry and wondering how to prevent dangerous revolutionary ideas from reaching them.

Having resources is not the same as managing those rescources. The greatest rescource this nation has ALWAYS had was the rugged individualisim. Slowly we are drying up the benefits to those who want to go it alone and step outside the box. From the oppression of the red tape system to the stifling litigation system we do our dead level best to dissuade people from taking a chance to make it big.

On the other hand one of my former scouts is now a guest of the State of Georgia for doing the WRONG THING. He listened to people who told him how easy he could make money. He was wrong.

I have no problem with people who are trying their best. I have a problem with people who give up for no reason.

The neat thing is how scouts from MULTIPLE backgrounds can grow to be close friends. I cannot count the number of checks I have written for scouts or leaders who wanted to go to camp and couldn't afford it.

Heck I routinely (every few years) sort through my gear and end up giving it to the troop. Last time I think I gave three packs, three sleeping bags, and three pads as well as two tents I had acquired over the years.

and my responding pic was that there are no limits to the growth of humanity. If you want to save the Earth you need to start looking for alternative sources of resources.

Orbital solar panels to collect energy from the sun and beam it down to the planets surface. Mining the moon and asteroids for ores needed to build infrastructure.

noncom, I was responding to Marko's post you quoted "I expected my post about the earth having limits to be obvious, hence the pictoral". I also like to fan the flames, hence my pic of the International Space Station.

Of course, the degradation of Earth is nothing compared to whats going to happen to a colony ship in orbit using the spin of the station to create gravity effects that will keep soil against the hull of the ship and allow us to plant crops, forest, lakes, animal herds, etc.. When that ship departs orbit and puts on accelration the new gravity effect will all be against the "rear wall" and all that earth is going to shift quiet rapidly. Talk about an upheaval. Then when we are half way and begin to decelerate all that earth is going to slam against the other end of the colony ship. What a mess, hope I don't have to sweep up afterwards.
