Well we ALL know that was REAGAN's fault....(LOL). Since there was nothing we could do..we get OUT OF THE WAY> but there is something you can do about a BEAR...

I didn't catch it if the dog lived. ???

Nigal the dog lived. On the Canadian Canoeing thread - bottom page one - there is a picture of the dog with the stitches and tubes to drain fluids. Page three of the thread has a fairly full account from the owner ("samsman"). This is obviously a guy who loves his dog.

I know in South Georgia they tell you not to take dogs into the swamp areas becuase Gators LOVE em.

I am wondering how much of a problem the bears getting to used to man is becoming.

It's definitely an add for having a good knife in bear country.

I saw a black bear running last week. Fortunately is was headed away from me. I definitely appreciate the fact that hunters put some fear of people in most bears - and take out many of the ones who don't have the fear.

Really, XL? I'd generally put my money on the bear.

I use my knife for whiddlin. A can of bear spray is my weapon of choice. They have just as much right to be there as I do, maybe more. I can't blame them for wanting to kill me. Just the way they're natured up...as my Mom used to say.

What a story!! And, just a few days after the fact, he's posting about it!

I'd like to say that I'd allow my dog to sacrifice herself for me. But, I'm willing to be that, if faced with this same situation, I would jump the bear, too.

Don't try this with Wolfeye's dog!

Incidentally, Ped, are you on that board often? That's my dad's favorite place to hang out. I think he's a regular over there.

Ruby: I go to VFTT pretty often. It sort of balances TT for me. It's regional, very actively moderated with little tolerance for off topic posts and none for fuego and trolling. All in all, its more useful for me in planning trips - but not as much fun.

I can live with that.

I get ya, Ped. The one my dad hangs out at is myccr for all the Canadian Canoe Routes info. He's a canoe enthusiast in Minnesota.

Ruby: I found CCR through the VFTT link. Never been there before. Only canoe site I've been to much is the one about the new Northern Woods canoe trail.

I found VFTT full of people with an over-sized ego and a bad attitude - but - hey - maybe it's me.
