I agree in a way. I believe Eddie is an ass hole and is way over rated. But I do love his tone. Now the DLR solo band was way better than Van Halen with Steve Vai ("That Steve Vai; what a nice little boy.") on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass. Eat 'Em and Smile is still one of the greatest 80's hair metal CDs IMHO.

Now Van Hagar realy kicked it up a notch and was a better band musiclly I think. But I'm a big Hagar fan. When Sammy left Van Halen jumped the shark and when they brought on Sharone they went face first into the tank.”

I think the band jumped the shark at "Jump."

The DLR solo project was so-so.

“van hagar was a better band commercially, but they didn't produce better ROCK songs than Van Halen. They didn't produce groundbreaking advancements in the industry. They just played what people liked. EVH changed guitar styles and influenced every great guitarist to come afterwards. Every hard rock band auditioning new guitarist used EVH rifts as a test of a guitarist ability.

You can't dismiss EVH because his technical skills with the guitar is less than many other guitarist, his brilliance was the innovations he introduced.

DLR is a great showman and can belt out a tune, but I don't care how many great talents he surrounded himself with in his solo career, it was the mix of his style and EVH music that made the Van Halen sound.
