Interest in Midwest trip Labor Day weeke nd??

Just thinking ahead. Labor Day weekend works really well for me to go on a trip. Last year four of us went out to South Dakota, but I don't think that (or Roam's trip -- pout!) will work. I've spent the big travel (read GAS) money on trips for the year.

Anyone interested in getting together, say, within 5 hours of where I live? (hahahaha... I'm the one suggesting the trip, hence I put good qualifications for MOI on it, LOL) For ease of reference, that would be five hours from where MN, IA and WI meet.

I keep looking at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve in Wisconsin. Other ideas -- if I'm the one planning -- would be Black River State Forest (WI), and as always Yellow River State Forest (IA).

Or, we could try some area state parks for car camping and good hiking. For example, Pikes Peak State Park, McGregor, IA or Wyalusing State Park south of Prairie du Chien, WI. Wyalusing has a number of trails, plus a canoe trail in Mississippi backwaters and canoe rentals. Pikes Peak has some trails. In either case, Effigy Mounds National Monument is close by, with 14 miles of trails in two units. YRSF is also just down the road.

Another idea: Blue Mounds State Park, Luverne, MN (near where MN, IA and SD meet). Also taking in Jeffers Petroglyphs, Comfrey, MN; Pipestone National Monument, Pipestone, MN; and Palisades State Park, Garretson, SD.

Any other ideas? Takers?

I could meet up with you part of the weekend; Friday evening - Sunday early afternoon would be my time frame. Kayaking/dayhikes or backpacking... what's your preference? ; ) I'm still a newbie backpacker, so I'm not up to high daily miles yet, but I'm sure I could learn alot.

I'd be up for either kayaking or backpacking.

Pallisades from what I've seen on my two trips there is more of a beautiful car camping park.

I'm for anywhere in the vicinity as it is all a new adventure for me.

dhutch1 If you talking about Palisades State Park in Ill. I'd say your correct. As I think there is only one camp spot that you can hike into.

I'd be out of range on SD.

We could always set up a car camp as a base of opperations and do some day paddles and dayhikes. I'd be looking for something w/i 4-5 hours of me too; so hopefully your radius and my radius intersect! (God that sounds almost like math!)

That Kickapoo Valley Reserve sounds interesting... lots to do there! Biking, hiking, canoeing... Apparently remote or car campsites

Would need to check to see how much it would cost a person... and if we might need a special event permit?

I'll do some checking on KVR in the next couple days, see if we can get it set for sure.

I LIKE IT! 100 winding miles that Mapquest tells me is 2.5 hours away. ;-P That's to La Farge, WI. Not sure where it is, but it's close, anyhoo.

Hey, anyone have a WI Parks permit? I don't know that we need one, but just wondering (and don't know if we could swing everyone in on one of those IF someone has one either!)

I've got the Federal sticker for the Nicolet & Chequamegon, and the state trail pass, but not the park sticker. It's not a problem for me to get one, I was thinking I'd need one for some fall camping when the tourists are finally gone up here. I have a trailblazer..., I can squeeze four bodies in there, unless you're like my kids and double up with seatbelts! ; )

I have a WI State Parks permit. I can get several people in the Explorer depending on gear and whether or not I bring the Shanedog. Of course we could always shuttle.

I was thinking about bringing my dog, but if we plan to do kayaking that won't work out. Well, I'm excited, my first TT Trip! I'm in, as long as there are no long mile days planned. I wouldn't want to hold anyone else up.
