“curious, any other archers on here?” 8:34:33 AM 7/31/06 “I used to shoot a PSE compound and was pretty good within 30 yards. Didn’t have anywhere to hunt though and sold the bow. I’d love to have a long bow for target.” 8:38:12 AM 7/31/06 “Bambi Killers!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)” 8:39:15 AM 7/31/06 “I use to target shoot a lot with a bow, but never went beyond that. I still have my bow, but I haven’t used it in a few years. I still might take up bow hunting some day, but I need to take the bow hunters safety course first.” 8:40:21 AM 7/31/06 “I've target shot my brother in law's bow a few times. Shot my dad's crossbow a lot more. The bow is more accurate than the crossbow. I found that kinda wierd.” 8:44:44 AM 7/31/06 “I was looking at the bows at BassPro the other week and can't believe how crazy shlt has gotten with bow hunting. These things are freek psiborg looking things with about 1,000 things on them that can fail. Tradition and simplicity. That is the joy of bow hunting.” 8:50:02 AM 7/31/06 ““I was looking at the bows at BassPro the other week and can't believe how crazy shlt has gotten with bow hunting. Nigal 9:50:02 AM 7/31/06 I think the same could be said about muzzleloaders.” 8:51:53 AM 7/31/06 “nigal, the funny thing about all these new expensive bows is that they're much harder to shoot/less forgiving than older slower bows. next weekend i'm going to my first 3-d course. it's like a golf course through the woods with a bunch stations. each station has a critter target at some distance you have to hit and are scored on accuracy. i think it's gonna be a lot of fun.” 10:37:04 AM 7/31/06 “Have fun sacco. I did a 3d course when I was a kid when I was in a junior archery class offered by my local rod & gun club. It was a blast.” 11:03:26 AM 7/31/06 “Sacco, I've got an old PSE SR1000 compound. It is a great old bow and still looks basically like a bow. I do however want a new Mathews compound bow. They are great looking, fast, flatshooting bows. I shoot Easton XX78 aluminum arrows, I've never been as accurate with carbons even though most people love them. I even cut and fletched my own arrows from shafts. I used to love shooting 3D targets with the guys at work. We had two courses in the area back then. It was a blast, simular to golf in that you kept a scorecard and walked to the next target. Now I don't know of any outdoor courses nearby. There are several indoor ranges but that doesn't appeal to me. When I first got my bow I practiced everyday and got pretty good with it. Sadly I haven't launched and arrow in about 6 months. I think I'm going to buy a new target and start back soon though. Whitetail bow season starts October 1st here and runs till February. I've taken my bow deer hunting but so far have been unsucessful. I just didn't see any deer during those times. I would however be interested if you ever wanted to make an Elk or Muledeer hunt out west. I think the bow permits are easier to obtain than gun permits. We already have all the backpacking gear. We could also plan a 3D trip, everyone bring a 3d target and set up our own course in the woods. All the great crazy stuff of a regular TT trip with our bows. Just no arrow play after the fireside drinking starts!” 1:55:00 PM 7/31/06 “hey bat going to SD the end of sept for muley, whitetail, and pronghorn. check out this thread for more details, lemme know if you want more details http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/44764,-1.php” 4:50:28 PM 7/31/06 “Yes, have a 60# compound and a 55# recurve. Bowhunt, and get deer and rabbits. Teach and test archers for NJ Hunter Safety. Teach Boy Scout Archery Merit badge. Never used carbon arrows, Al is good enough for me 2018 or 2117. We have a 2+ month season here for bowhunting, it is great to get out into the woods. And as this is a backpacking site, no never seen a backpacker when in the woods hunting because I do not hunt where there are people wandering about. I have heard people when I am in the woods, they make as much noise as raccoons, but they have always been other hunters scouting.” 4:55:31 PM 7/31/06 “Hey Sacco did you already get your permits? It looks like from what I've found that most of the Black Hills National Forest is open to hunting. Like you said ice and road access could be an issue. I wouldn't think you would want to hunt more than a few hours hike from your car. I've been wanting to do something like this. I need to find an old external frame pack for meat transport. One of my coworkers went on a Colorado trip and they killed an elk, it took them all day to haul the meat out. No trophy it was a big cow. If you find something interesting give me a hollar. Ever consider a chest freezer and small generator in the back of a truck vs ice chests? It would give you more options and you wouldn't need it unless you made a kill. I guess my redneck (we call ourselves coonass in Louisiana) is showing. Prices have indeed gotten nuts. I am not looking for a super nuclear fast muscle car hunting bow, my experience has been that the tiny superfast bows are innacurate and noisy POSs. I plan on getting a basic hunting setup, few if any bells or whistles, just good quiet, reliability. Back in the day, I could put six arrows into the diameter of a Dixie cup. Will take me a little while, but I'll get back there. Shooting 3D is a lot of fun.” 10:40:32 PM 7/31/06 “Never gone bowhunting yet...haven't had the time to take the safety course. Been shooting on and off for about 10 years...haven't shot this year because of my work schedule. :o( Own two bows...first one was a Walmart's Bear Whitetail II....shot that for about four years...then got myself a PSE Nitro....alot more expensive and faster. What they say is true....faster doesn't mean more accurate. I've to shoot more with the fast bow to keep up my accuracy. My best shots to date was about five years ago....three arrows into a cigarette package at 50 meters. I used to shoot aluminums...now I shoot carbon.” 11:24:00 PM 8/01/06 “Not interested in hunting, but possibly for target and protection in an invasion by Canada. Any opinions on advantages/disadvantages of compound vs crossbow. Any and all relevant opinions are welcome.” 7:59:26 AM 11/17/09 “It`s easier to use tnt tipped arrows with a compound bow.” 8:04:24 AM 11/17/09 “yep. get yerself ready. my kid has been creating a ballista in the garage. trial launch is tonight - just in time for "siege wars" at school. hahaha” 8:09:57 AM 11/17/09 “I mean, if you think back to arnold in predator with his homemade reed bow and the M40 grenade-tipped arrow, that think was pretty sweet. Conversely, the mohawk renegade in road warrior had the very nice wrist model crossbow that was quite effective. i dunno. sorta a toss up.” 8:10:24 AM 11/17/09 “What would John Rambo use?” 8:13:31 AM 11/17/09 “Anybody have an opinion not based on what they read in the latest Impact Movie Magazine, or from playing Dungeons and Dragons?” 8:14:57 AM 11/17/09 “Crossbow would be more accurate and more compact. Compound bow would be faster to knock an arrow. Neither in my opinion would be the best chose for self protection.” 8:26:52 AM 11/17/09 “Crossbows are fun to shoot and can be less of a challenge (for some people) than shooting a compound bow, however I love the demands of a compound---they require more discipline and more practice. No matter what you elect to shoot, practice is the important thing. If you are shooting for recreation, I think a compound is a great choice: they are fun to shoot and will test your abilities. A crossbow is essentially a point and shoot weapon like a firearm (cock it, aim, pull the trigger) and the mechanics of it provide the necessary consistency when it comes to an anchor point and string release. A compound requires your strength to draw (most crossbows have mechanical aids to help draw the string) and aim as well as the discipline to anchor at a consistent point and release the string consistently. Both type of bows can be expensive but as long as you don`t need the latest and greatest and fastest bow for hunting, you can save some money by purchasing either a target compound bow or a beginners hunting compound bow. As far as the Canadians are concerned, a crossbow is probably a better choice. The trick to bagging a Canadian is to shoot for the groin. The trick to conquering Canada is to shoot the beer cans out of their hand forcing their surrender.” 8:28:58 AM 11/17/09 “also, anybody know any legal differences - specifically about registering, or otherwise ...?” 8:29:36 AM 11/17/09 “Be a man and get an English longbow with a historically accurate 150lb - 200lb draw. Everything else is for sissies.” 8:30:00 AM 11/17/09 “non - agreed with your assessment that a compound is fun to shoot - got to shoot one this weekend in the woods and it was a lot of fun” 8:32:03 AM 11/17/09 “I don`t know about your state, but in NY the only restriction is you can`t hunt with a crossbow unless you can prove you have a disability that prevents you from using a compound bow.” 8:35:09 AM 11/17/09 “Echoing zac, not sure about your state but there shouldn`t be any restrictions on ownership/use. The restrictions would come into play if you`re hunting. A longbow or recurve would be the ultimate challenge and brought something else to mind: if using a compound or longbow or recurve, you need to decide whether to shoot with the aid of mechanical sights and a release aid or instinctive without the use of mechanical sight or release aids.” 8:42:53 AM 11/17/09 “i asked my buddy about the tech, ... "does it take away from the sport?", and he indicated that he did not think so - in other words, the extra tech did not detract from the experience and allowed it to remain challenging, yet still provide a level of accuracy agree? disagree? to gauge that I asked him about competition shooting and it sounded like the tech was allowed” 8:50:07 AM 11/17/09 “I use both a release aid and sights and they don`t take anything away at all. There is still plenty of room for error. A crossbow is fun to shoot but IMO not nearly as challenging. The first time I ever shot one it had a laser sight on it and I hit the bullseye while shooting from the hip, lol.” 9:01:20 AM 11/17/09 “Growing up I took junior archery. We used to shoot both compound and sightless recurve bows. I remember the outdoor 3d courses were a lot of fun.” 9:07:26 AM 11/17/09 “Yeah, those courses are fun. Pull the lever, try to hit the target running down the zip line. Good times.” 9:22:02 AM 11/17/09 “One of the 3D course I shot at had a "bionic buck" which consisted of a deer silhouette (sp) cut out of plate steel with a very tiny bullseye cut through it. I saw a lot of arrows crumpled that day, lol!” 9:27:02 AM 11/17/09 No, NO, NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! “Not the beer can trick! Argh, I surrender, eh?” 10:34:53 AM 11/17/09
