Can you still drive into Yosemite Valley as you please, or did they ever implement a shuttle system? If you had to pick one dayhike at Yosemite, what would you recommend?

I would take the bus to Glacier Point and hike back to the valley via the Panoramic Cliffs Trail and either the John Muir or Mist trails...great views on that hike and you go by 3 major waterfalls...Illouette, Nevada and Vernal...

If I lived out there and wanted to do a dayhike and swim, I would go to Tuolomne Meadows trailhead to CAthedral Lakes..only about three miles not strenuous up and magnificent views from the top and of cathedral peak reflected in the lake ...making it an excellent place to take photos PLUS ....... good swimming opportunities on a hot day .

if yosemite valley was in my backyard, thats what i would do for a dayhike

You can still drive yourself around...or you can take the shuttle.

Lots of possibilities in Yosemite Valley and from the Tioga Pass road for day hikes...hard to pick just one.

Mataharihiker and Om's suggestions are both very good. If you want something more aggresive you could do Half Dome as a day hike or hike to the top of Yosemite Falls.

The day hike with the biggest bang for the buck would be up the 4 Mile Trail to Glacier Point then down the Panoramic Trail, via the Mist Trail. Or vice versa going down the Mist Trail in the afternoon when your tired is hell on the knees and you are more prone to injuries.
My Second recommindation

My Second recommendation would be Half Dome in a day. Start out around 5:30 in the morning and take enough water. Go up the Mist Trail but use the JMT on the return trip, same reasons as above.
Both hike are strenuous. About 13 and 18 miles repectively.

I did the hike from Tenaya Lake to Clouds Rest yesterday. It was a really nice hike with rewarding views at the top. If you're looking for a hike with nice views, I would suggest heading out to Clouds Rest. Here's a picture from the top of Clouds Rest:

I'd have to second the Clouds Rest day hike. Much easier than Half Dome, better views and not as crowded.

Tenaya Lake to Clouds Rest... Distance and elevation gain? Approximate time spent? Looks like about 4 miles one way.

Panoramic Cliffs Trail and either the John Muir or Mist trails....Distance and elevation loss? Approximate time spent including waiting for a bus?

Will have to pass on Half Dome. I wanted to do that when I was younger.

The trip from Tenaya Lake to Clouds Rest is 7 miles each way, so 14 miles round-trip with a total elevation gain of about 3000 feet both ways. It took me about 6 hours round-trip to do the hike - it's a good trail - I was able to wear sandals.
