Twas a sunny weekend. Rainy, Ford and me did a trip to our favorite piece of volcanic rock.

Ford in some alpiney meadows:

Rainrunner bent over Huckleberry bushes:

Some big white mountain:

Dinner:

Whatta view:

My tent:

The sun just starting to rise:

The moon at sunrise:

Ford kicking back this morning:

Family of Mt. Goats acting all goaty this morning:

Ford saying goodbye to Tahoma:

A forest fire started on saturday across the river, way down below, and we could smell it blowing our way. Lots of thin smoke this morning on the way out.

But what can I say? I love Tahoma...she is my favorite Mt. of all. No other can woo me like she does. I could spend a life time hiking her and never be bored. (Yeah, ok, for you non-Wa natives..Tahoma is Rainier ;-) )

FLH, I woke up at around 5 am, looked outside my tent door, grabbed my camera..took a couple shots and went back to sleep..lol! It was gorgeous out.
The pink in all the evening photos is most likely from the forest fire, so far down (4500 ft or so below us).

Were you in the Tatoosh Range? Wonderland trail? Looks like awesome alpine country. Camping on grass is so much better than dirt. Way to go.

Thanks for sharing, Sarbar! You have such great trails! Ford is so lucky.

And thanks for keeping me company last night, sort of. I woke at 3:30 a.m. and couldn't fall back to sleep. So I got out your cookbook and read through it, dreaming of my next trail meal.

Idahobob...we were on the other side of the mountain. Lets just say we were X/C ;-) I wouldn't call it grass that we were on (whistling innocently) but I practiced my good LNT behavior ;-) Lets just say that heather can be extra soft in Crocs in camp (no boots in camp for me).

This was Ford's 3rd X/C trip so far. He loves going on them. Only thing is...he thinks what we do is what everyone else is doing. Whoopsie.....

Ruby, lol! I am sure my book could put you to sleep instantly ;-)

"Seriously, while I enjoyed the photos I was very shocked you had a photo of your tent on that heather.
Heather is a very damagable plant...even in a rarely used area. Yes, a group of boy scouts wandering around on the PCT are more likely to cause damage...but, if a newbie were to see the photos, they might not realize that they can damage heather and huckleberry plants (and Paintbrush and Lupine, Western Amone, etc....). That was a photo for Webshots or a personal website or with a disclaimer.
The route you were on was X/C but......it was not stated to be that. When I saw that photo this morning my jaw was scraping!
As for Di....she was a ranger for 3+ years and is an expert on plants and their biology. That was her job."

Whatever Kleetn...I have come fartehr in my views over the years. You can pull up 3 year old threads if you want. I don't say where we were, and were a tiny party. And had the permit to be there. You wouldn't have known we were there, a minute after leaving. If for one thing, I am teaching my son quite nicely about what he can do-if he is careful.
And ps: there is a reason I had my Big Agnes pad on the trip-the rocks under my back were not so comfy. You just can't see them. I searched till I found a cozy site.
I just don't take photos of me running thru heather..that is something I won't EVER do. And your old thread...well, the people were sitting in the heather!!

Pardon my ignorance. What's X/C?
Ruby
11:26:44 PM
8/23/06

X/C=cross country ... going off trail. Where we were, X/C backpacking is allowed if you have a special permit. It is the only way to get to spend a night in such pretty areas :-) Most of the alpine zones are limited to 1 or 2 parties per night. The zone we were in, there was another party up there, but they were at the other end, a good 2 miles away or more. So it is usally very quiet at night..and you have a good chance at seeing animals in the morning.
And you can pick your campsite for where you would like it. We usually dry camp when going X/C, and usually pick a site way up high.

Ford loves going X/C - he knows it is special, something that is for the two of us :-)
This was in late July on another trip that was partially cross country:

That's what I thought it meant, but I wasn't sure. Like bushwacking.

What a special thing to share with Ford.

I just don't take photos of me running thru heather..that is something I won't EVER do. And your old thread...well, the people were sitting in the heather!!

As opposed to you, stomping through it in your Crocs?

I wouldn't call it grass that we were on (whistling innocently) but I practiced my good LNT behavior ;-) Lets just say that heather can be extra soft in Crocs in camp (no boots in camp for me).

I'd say sitting in heather is somewhat less impactful than, say, pitching your tent on it!

Kleetn, you like to argue..for who knows why..maybe your just bitter and lonely and couldn't get out..waaaaaaaahhhhhhh.
Anyhoo, if you could read...I pitched my freestanding tent on rocks, surrounded by heather.
When I go X/C I try to avoid walking on plants as much as I can-hence bouncing on rocks as much as I can. I don't wear boots in camp, and I step as lightly as I can. That is more that can be said than some others out here in the northwest.
Now, why don't you go back to NWHikers and be all bitter and pruny over there? Seems to be where you are happiest anyways. I had a good time, not my issue that you didn't get any alpiney goodness ;-P

Kleetn, you like to argue..for who knows why..maybe your just bitter and lonely and couldn't get out..waaaaaaaahhhhhhh.

I don't particularly like arguing. Arguing really has nothing to do with it. I just like to point out a hypocrite when I see one, and I see plenty of it in your poser posts.

Hypocrite [hip-uh-krit]
–noun
1. a person who pretends to have virtues, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

Anyhoo, if you could read...I pitched my freestanding tent on rocks, surrounded by heather.

I can read just fine. It is the pictures you posted that show the truth. Does anyone actually believe you pitched your tent on rocks with all that very delicate alpiney goodness plant around? Especially when your pictures show otherwise? Face it, you're busted.

When I go X/C I try to avoid walking on plants as much as I can-hence bouncing on rocks as much as I can. I don't wear boots in camp, and I step as lightly as I can.

So that must be why you posted this picture of you (wearing Crocs) and others sitting on the heather while cooking?

It wouldn't be a big deal if you hadn't taken so many others to task for the lesser things. Don't bother trying to spin your story, you just end up sounding like StoveStomper does when defending his boy BushRove.

from the rainier website
Alpine Camping: .....Never camp on exposed vegetation or the partially vegetated "islands" of rare alpine plants as these plants struggle to survive here.

as long as sarby was not in an alpine area (it appears she was not, but rather sub-alpine), then it does appear that she was in compliance

for that matter, if kleety was in compliance 2 years ago (it appears to me he was), then sarby shouldve him alone. dont make me come back there and separate you two!
