The kid's thread got me to wondering about the different names we use for GrandParents.

I called mine GrandMa, Granny, and GrampPa.

I had a Pap and Granny on one side and a Gaga on the other. My maternal grandfather died before I was born.

All of my grandparents are gone now, but I called them, simply, "Grandma and Grandpa." I do have a step-grandmother (94 years old), though, and I am truly belssed to still have her in my life. I have always called her by her first name, even though I think of her as my grandma.

To my granddaughter and soon-to-be grandson, I am "Granny" :-)

And at what age should grandchildren stop calling their grandparents Pawpaw and Mawmaw? Nothing wierder than some 30 year old calling someone pawpaw or mawmaw.

I always thought it was wierd that we would call each other by a title. Like mom or dad. I tell my nieces and nephews to call me nigal like everyone else.

Never, in our family. It's a sign of love and respect.

LOL. I remember my Granny had to go into the hospital when I was in college. I was going to have some flowers sent to her room untill I realized with horror that I didn't know her real name.

I was lucky to have known my great grandparents for quite some time. I called my great grandfather Ge Ge. I came up with this and it stuck. Everyone in the family, including adults called him this. We all called my great grandmother Mousie. My grandfather came up with this name for her. He always said she was as quiet as a mouse. It stuck.

I came up with the name of pop pop for my grandfather. He is still alive and eveyone calls him this.

I have a gramma. I had a grampa. I never knew my dad's parents.

Abby has a GG (great gramma)
a Papa
a Grampa
2 grammas
and a nana

It's easier to keep them all straight with different titles, or names. I asked them all what they'd like to be called by her when she was born, and have stuck with their requests.

On my dad's side they are just Grandpa, and Gramaw
On my mothers side it is PawPaw (PawPaw Pete sometimes), and Grandma Pete(deceased), and Gramma Jean (remarried).
I ran away from home at 16 and went to Nashville where PawPaw lives and didn't know how to get to his house, so when I got there I tried to get his number from the operator, and couldn't find it because his real name is Floyd, but at the time I couldn't remember that. LOL! Funny really. I was only gone from home about 24 hours though...

Winky. I had a grammy wink (it's a family name) and that's what I picked when Ana was born. Then the kids shortened it to winky. All their friends call me Winky, so as a Brownie leader, I was Winky too, and now all my friends call me Winky...LOL...

Old Texas women like being called "Me-Me" or "Me-Maw" or some other gibberish. My wife wanted us to be called Nana & Papa but the family vetoed it. I guess the grandbaby will call us whatever she wants.

Maybe I should cut the crap and have her call me "Money."

My mom's name is Mary, so she is called Gramary. My dad goes by the Friesian name for grandpa of Pake, which by virtue of the littlest one's mispronunciation is now pronounced pah-kee.

SS - one of my older cousins butchered whatever name she was supposed to be called and it stuck. The mom of that cousin now uses Gaga herself with her grandkids. Her husband goes by grandman, which really cracks me up. We pronounce gaga as gah-gah.

Dads side Mammy and Pappy.

My Grandmom just turned 94. The others have passed on. I worshipped the ground they walked on. They were wonderful people.

Grandpa
Grandma
-------
Grandpa
Mee-Maw

As the oldest of 11 grandchildren I apparently couldn't say "grandma" so I called the last person on that list Mee-Maw instead. It stuck for many of the other grandkids, but not all. My kids call their grandparents:

Grammy
Bee-pop
-------
Poppie
(don't remember this last name)

Hmm, this is interesting! I always like to hear about different names or pronunciations of things.

I have two Grammas (well that's how I say it, but I spell it Grandma), and one Gramps/Granpa/Grandaddy. I always used to call him Grandaddy for like ever, then recently he decided he wanted to be called "Granpaw" as he pronounces it, instead. LOL! You can't change your own name like that! When I'm being silly, I call him Gramps.

Once I addressed a card to my mom's mom using her real name, and she went on and on about how she thought I must be mad at her or something, because I didn't put "Grandma" on the envelope. What kind of crazy person mails a letter to "Grandma," for gosh sakes? haha! She's nutty.

Nigal
Nigal, I would have never dreamed of calling my grandparents by their first name. I think someone said it is a matter of respect and I agree. It drives me crazy to hear a child call their parents by their first name. Maybe I'm old fashioned or it is just something from the south for me the title is for life! :-)

And at what age should grandchildren stop calling their grandparents Pawpaw and Mawmaw? Nothing wierder than some 30 year old calling someone pawpaw or mawmaw

lyra - I always send (or sent) birthday cards in the mail to "Grandma lastnamehere". I figure mail delivery technicians see that all the time.

I am amazed at how many PawPaw's there are! I thought I was one of the few to use this. And YES once given the name, it stays for life, and it can't be changed.

I never knew my mom's parents.

My dad's parents both spoke with heavy Flemish accents.

We always called them something that sounded like "MuhMUH" and "PuhPUH" with the accent on the second syllable rather than the first.

Ours are long gone. However, we became grandparents two months ago to a beautiful baby girl by the name of Aliya. I have chosen the moniker "Pappy" and my wife has yet to declare an apprpiate name for herself, but is resolute that "Granny" will not do at all. I can hardly wait for this sweetheart to get big enough to hike!
