What is it with PA these days?!?!?
I am going to be in PA from 9/9 - 9/13. I'll be in a class from the 12th-13th but from the 9th-11th want to go backpacking. Any places that would be especially good for this that people could recommend? I'll have a car so a few hour drive is not out of the question. I have been on the Quehanna Trail already and would not be opposed to going back to hike a different section.

so many options- the best trails in PA are generally recognized as follows: black forest, loyalsock, west rim, old loggers path, link, and sections of the mid state.

parts of the appalachian trail are nice and only an hour or so from philly.

Black Forest Trail is 4 hours from where I will be. That's not bad... a valid option.

Black Forest Trail is a tough one, about a 40 mile loop with many connector and spur trails so you can shorten your trip. lots of steep climbs and descents- tons of awesome vistas, great mountain streams, and a few waterfalls.

40-hikes are listed here in Hikes Around Philadelphia. You can do a Google search on any of them. I was actually looking for a hike along The Schuylkill River Trail.

I am about set on the Black Forest Trail and am thinking of adding enough time to hike the whole 40 mile loop. Still have not worked out the timing but I am pretty sure this is what I want to do.

Yo Jimmy
If you can't do all of the BFT I have maps and details for a 25 mile loop on my site:

I was supposed to do the southern section over the holiday but Ernesto shut us down.

thanks, mrhyker. that's a great resource. I am still planning on taking a few days and hike the whole thing, but one never knows. I may have to take a day off to go on the RRG trip Crash set up and I may have to take a day from PA to go to RRG. More than a fair swap to visit with some TTers.

if you liked the Quehanna, the Black Forest will knock your socks off. It's a really hard trail. I recommend taking four days to do it and start up at 44 instead of Slate Run.

Rt 44
The BFT crosses RT44 in two places. My loop, and I think where ENS is talking about is the northern crossing. That way if you need to bail early you can use my route.
