I had a little surprise at the end of my Long Trail section hike on Sunday. When I got back to the trailhead at Lincoln Gap, I discovered that some individual decided it would be fun to smash both driver-side door windows and the rear hatch window on my car. Nothing on the inside of the car was touched. It makes me wonder why some one would do such a thing? What is there to gain from damaging someone else’s property? I called the Vermont State Troopers, but all they could do was give me a case number to give to my insurance company. Thankfully some kind soul taped up garbage bags over the broken windows, which kept most of the rainwater from the previous week out of my car. In addition to that, the hiking community really pulled through. A group of hikers came down the trail shortly after I arrived and offered me additional tape and plastic for the windows. Another hiker gave me an ice-cold beer out of a cooler they had in their car. I taped up the windows and cleaned up enough glass from my seats that I would end up sitting on chards of glass and had a very interesting drive home from Vermont. I should find 3 new windows on my car when I get home tonight. I’m glad my insurance has full glass coverage. I think the next time I do an extended backpacking trip, I’ll arrange for a ride to the trailhead so I don’t have to leave the car there for over a week.

that sucks lumberzac :(

I hope who ever did that to your car gets what they deserve. Those kind folks who help you out are shinning examples of the backpacker/hiker community.

Tough luck, Zac!

There are some real backwoods home boys in Vermont who resent visitors.........could be.

Did you hear banjos at any time during your hike?

Where did you start??

Wouldn't it have been really terrible if the rocks had bounced off the windows and hit the rock throwers in the head? ;-)

Sorry zac.

Does the Long Trail have an organization like the AT has the ATC? I know the ATC keeps a list of breakins at trailheads and likes people to report them so they can let others know to avold those trailheads.

MarkO - The only music I heard during the trip was from the caretaker at the Battell Shelter, who played a mean harmonica. We hiked from Lincoln Gap to the Canadian Boarder.
SS - Not a bad idea. I’ll try contacting the GMC. It might help prevent this from happening to someone else.

Yes. We started at Lincoln Gap and got a ride at Journey's End back to Lincoln Gap to pick up my car.

That truly sucks. I've never had problems at trailheads in that area.

I hope karma prevails and pimpslaps whoever did this to you

That is a beautiful area. I've never had problems parking there either.

Just think - the same thing could have happened at the mall parking lot back home and then you wouldn't have had a week on a glorious trail to show for it.

BAD...BUT COULD BE WORST
That's really terrible that that happened to you lumberzac. Hope the scum(s) get caught. At least you know that fellow hikers/backpackers were helpful.

I have a three year old new car...and I'm nervous leaving it at a trailhead for a dayhike....I really get scared when I go do a 2 day trip. But so far nothings happened to it....knock on wood.

Since your title is A**HOLES W/ROCKS....

A few years ago...some mofo threw a cinder block from an overpass in Montreal, and struck a car windshield....killing it's female passenger. Apparently there were three individuals seen running away. There's been a reward for info on the thrower.....up to $7000.00 now. So one day maybe one of them will TURN on the killer for the reward.

NYS used to have kids throwing rocks off of overpasses but after a few were prosecuted & higher fences installed on over passes, it seems to have abated.

I've been lucky at trailheads. I usually go to the lesser used area's. My brother-in-law left my passenger (unlocked & slightly ajar) door open in the adirondacks for 4-5 days with no problems at all.

I have heard of problems in the Adirondack high peaks & more popular area's though.

I've heard of many more problems when people park on the side of the road & trespass on private property.

In thirty years of trips to West Virginia I was only vandalized once.............some critter chewed my radiator hose.

I hope he got a good dose.

Was that your car, lumberzac?

Kidding. That sucks. I've never been vandalized, but always use my crappy "other" car to keep at the trailheads. I was just thinking about bringing my new (2005) car for a hike this Fall in the Whites, because it can fit more people. Screw that!!

It could be. I just found out that another vehicle with Mass plates was hit at that trailhead at the same time mine was.

We did meet a guy on Jay Peak that couldn’t figure out how we could be from New York, but not have the NYC accent. It took some time to convince him we aren’t all a bunch of city slickers.

Full glass coverage? How does one get that? I've spent @700 on glass. Of course, my sunroof was 550 and it wasn't vandalism. And it could be worse, it could have happened in your parking spot, behind your apt, within your view, in broad daylight. Of course I didn't have to drive anywhere to get mine replaced.

My dad was a truck driver (retired) and I remember him coming home one night about 15 years ago and his hand was cut all to shlt because some where in Missouri someone threw a chunk of asphalt off an over pass and it came through the windshield of the truck. He was lucky he wasn't hurt a lot worse. He had to drive the truck all the way back to Indy with a bleeding hand, and a hole in the windshield. Good thing it was summer.

Most of the time I hike, I hike non-stop. I hike thru the night, sometimes all night. It's happened so often, that I stopped carrying all that gear. I nap in my car or in the woods nearby.

I don't get involved in a lot of smaller issues but I'd take offense at somebody vandalizing my or another car at a trailhead.

Unbelievable, I’m getting jerked around by the autoglass company. The work on my car was supposed to be done on Tuesday, but when I got home I got a message from them saying they didn’t realize that the side windows needed to be replaced. When the person from the insurance company spoke with the glass company, they put us all on 3-way calling and I remember them explaining that there were 3 windows that needed to be replaced. They rescheduled the work for Thursday. When I got home, I still had garbage bag windows. I called the glass company and now they are telling me they need the keys for the car to complete the work. Why the hell did they not tell me that in the first place!? They only told me that the car needed to be left unlocked. Meanwhile I have to borrow a car, because mine isn’t drivable without someone else in the car to keep an eye on blind spots. I can’t wait to get the questionnaire from my insurance company because they are going to get an earful.

Sorry for the vent, but this #&%!$ is pissing me off.

This is partly why I avoid the groomed and well-marked footpaths you hardcore backpackers flock to. Too many trailrats willing to eff with your stuff at the trailhead. I stick solely to bushwacking in the real wilderness. [/superior smug tone]

We have had a serious problem with BRICKING....that is where you tie a brick to a rope and dangle it off an overpass and try to hit cars as they speed by.

A couple of months ago we had some kids Bricking over Interstate 20 and one of the S.H.s misjudged the arc of the swing. The brick hit the driver's side window of some little old lady's Caddilac. It busted out the window but a 65mph it was like a grappling hook.
Ended up jerking off the kid's arm at the elbow. (OUCH HUH?)
Luckily a local off duty firefighter was driving by and saw it happen so he grabs the kid and packs the stub and takes the kid to the hospital.

The lady, needless to say, stops immediatly and a State Trooper who saw it happen gets the hand and lower arm and they rushed it to the hospital. Apparently the kid will get 80% use out of his arm if he stays up with rehab.

The CRAPPY thing (you know how freaking LAW is) is that the little old lady in the Caddilac was arrested and charged.

OH heck...give me the trout I will hit myself (LOL)....

The funny part is that I pulled that on a friend of mine (he is a lawyer) he got back to the court house and pulled it on some people in the Records room. LOL. He drug the story out about 10 minutes, by the time he was finished he had about 50 people, including 2 judges, a dozen or so attorneys in the room.
The uproar at the "She was charged" was hilarious...then he dropped the "Armed Robbery" line...there was a collective groan throughout the courthouse.....

Just reel em in slowly guys
