new to TT
New to TT but have been using the site for some time now. Folks here seem very cool. Hope to get to know everyone...my backpacking friends are dropping out like flies so perhaps meeting a few diehards on TT is not such a bad thing:)

hey Vernal, where in PA are you? There are always trips going on in PA. PA is the most active state on TT so you are in a good place. I'd say there is atleast 1 trip in PA a month. Sometimes there are 3-4 PA trips a month. Come out and join us. Check the trips page. I plan a lot of trips. What kind of trips do you like? Lots of hills and big mileage?

LOL everyone. Thanks for the warm welcome:) Get this, the first year i haven't b-packed at least a handful of trips and it's driving me insane! I was turned onto scdiet.org after being diagnosed and hospitalized with IBD (Colitis/Crohns) last spring--searched for a natural healing solution online etc... I'm 100% now due to scd, mountain bike almost everyday, but haven't been able to incorporate the diet into my b-packing food system. Please, anyone with suggestions please e-me alpinealex@gmail.com . Thanks again for the warm welcome and i hope to meet everyone on the trail asap:)

No sugars, starches, lactose. It may allieviate symptoms but it's doubtful that it slows down disease progression much.

No drugs, vern?

The diet was a BIG transition for me to say the least. I'm not looking for a cure b/c there is none but i do want to be able to work and play and be in 100% remission. I won't bore you with the details but let's just say that this diet not only changed my dire physical state but also my mental state as well. Most of the stuff i cannot eat is garbage anyway, empty calories invented by coporations to turn a buck and slowly kill of the population. But #&%!$ man, friggin miss potatoe and rice like a mofo!! I just started eating sprouted spelt bread like two months ago and it's been a life-saver! Anyway, thanks for your words but i need your help in getting a food system together. So i can get back in the saddle and hang out with some of you trail monkeys:)

It sure is the truth brother! Took me a while to figure it out but gladly it finally dawned on me. Next step is to go vegan but it's nearly friggin impossible on the scd :|

Sorry i missed a few posts from MarkO and bearmagnet today...was distracted with work:)

BM, i was on entocort for a month and it helped the acute symptoms--surgery was ruled out b/c the meds helped at first. But i really wanted to get to the root of the problem and try to stay off the meds. Some are lucky enough to get results with nutrition and you don't have to have either disease to realize the benefits of putting good things in your body--most of it is common sense. Why i chose SCD is because it is well researched and deals with the molecular structure of food. It is working with amazing results. Stay of the poptarts dude, the last thing you need BM is more sugar. lol

MArkO,

nothing synthetically produced, no preservatives, additives, or any "manufactured" foods. no sugars, diary(i eat certain cheeses), or starches are allowed. basically, i eat fruits, most veggies, and protiens. my only sugar comes from the foods and raw honey(which is really good). may have missed some posts sorry:) but check out the website scdiet.org and e-me if you want more info

actually, anyone wanting to talk about diet, nutrition, whatever can e-me...this way i don't beat a dead horse and bore everyone eh:) don't worry i'm not an email bomber or lurker....gonna post my m.o. and some trip pics soon sos i don't scares yous:)

Hi Vernal! You haven't met me yet, but I'm the Queen of TT, and you may address me as such. ;-D

Now about your diet...I think I have the perfect thing! You can eat most cheese, right, and also beans/lentils? Check out these things, they're deeelish! They are boxed, but I don't know if I'd consider them "processed" like a Twinkie or whatever, because you can read the ingredients, and they're just like what you'd put in it, if you were making it yourself.

http://www.tastybite.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=I00003KS&Show=ExtInfo

I've taken these backpacking before, and they're deeelish! Well not the spinach one, b/c I don't like weird cheese. But the lentils rock!

So you can eat peanut butter, too, right? And those packets of tuna? And dried fruit? Those would all be good things to take, right. And tell me about the sugar...you can eat sugar as it's found in fruit, but not sugar from sugar cane or anything else except honey?

Oh I guess I didn't explain why those are so good for backpacking. The food is already prepared, in a foil/plastic packet, and all you do is boil a pot of water, submerge the packet, let it warm, open it, and eat it! No preparation whatsoever.

Trader Joe's has that stuff!
I get most of my backpacking food from Joe's.

They also started selling ready-to-eat brown rice in a plastic boil-in/microwave bag.

I haven't tried the rice yet but I plan to.

"I just started eating sprouted spelt bread like two months ago and it's been a life-saver!"

Welcome to the boards.

I’ve modified my diet and it has made a world of difference in how I feel. Bread has always been a weakness of mine but I get the sprouted Ezekiel bread and love it.

You guys are coming through! Good stuff. This is what i was hoping for...some help brainstorming.

lyra,

the packaged tuna won't do as it is a processed food, otherwise we'd be on the trail already and you'd just have to put up with my fish breath:) cannot eat anything containing added sugar. i simply gorge on raw honey, my only sugar fix--the lentils and beans don't, ummm, go down too well unfortunately and i'd hate to get poopy pants while pulling a pack.

MarkO,

don't dump your medical stocks and mutual funds yet buddy:) plenty of ignant folk out there on the standard american diet, sorry to say. in this day and age, the inforamtion is readily available there are no excuses to eat properly and avoid pitfalls. (i feel like a dad sometimes preachin this sht:)

Nigal,

Ezekiel bread tore me a new one :( i eat 'Berlin Sprouted Spelt Bread' with ease though, very easy on the gut and tastes great. http://www.berlinnaturalbakery.com

can't thank you guys enough for the suggestions and humor...will review and get back soon..peace

Beans and rice, etc........cheap!
