late october....
jan chan and i have decided to go ahead and jump into the waters of matrimony (i am confident that there will be no belly flops this time around!!)

we will enjoy a proper honeymoon later (next year??) but we did want to get away for a couple of days and enjoy some gorgeous fall weather....

i thought i would solicit some ideas from you trailtalkers about an appropriate hike for a honeymoon (probably two or three days) followed by a relaxing night at a nearby (luxury??) hotel.... we are on a fairly tight schedule so this would have to be within a six hour drive of our central ohio digs....

what would you recommend???

When will this be?
I'd recommend Dolly Sods, WV. Make sure you include Dolly Sods North. There are no luxury hotels nearby but how about a modern cabin with Jacuzzi on the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River? (I hope I said that right.)

The Cranberry Wilderness ...
But I don't know of any hotels/cabins nearby. Here's a BP from my site:

Another place that might surprise you is Canaan Mt. Great hiking and little foot traffic!

The Quehanna trail is in PA. You can make a nice trip of that, then head back to Pittsburg for a night on the town?

Don't know if it's too far. Hockings Hills/Nelsonville Ohio area is nice. We just did day-hiking and stayed in a "cabin" with a whirlpool that had sky lights.

mrhyker - there's Yokum's cabins right at the base of Seneca Rocks - driving to Dolly Sods is short

that's where I stayed the 3 day weekend - nice place

Harman's VS Yokum's
Harman's is about 15 minutes closer to DS and a tad bit further off of the road. They're behind that big church on 55.

Another good area is Seneca Creek Back Country.

Gonzo and Jan, congratulations! When you do a longer honeymoon, come visit the wine country. We'd love to see you again.

How about something on the North Country Trail in Michigan? A few TTers hiked the NCT / Manistee River Trail from Red Bridge a while back. It's about 20 miles RT if I recall correctly. :-)

http://www.northcountrytrail.org/explore/guide/e4.htm

It's not too far from the Traverse City Area-- Lots of wineries and the Sleeping Bear Dunes as well for some day hikes...

Or, if you want to head back down the southwestern coast of MI, there's St. Joseph (which is a quaint little town on Lake Michigan)--and I understand, they may have some nice little places to stay there--nearby would be Paw Paw, MI and a "wine belt" in southwestern, MI, too... ;-)

Hope this helps! :-)

(I have some photos of the NCT/MRT hike on my webshots:

hocking hills
jan chan graciously consented to become the bride of gonzo on october 22 at the robert rothchild farms in urbana, ohio....a good time was had by all (i can verify that gonzo had a good time!!)...following a post nuptial stay at the patrick house bed and breakfast, the newlyweds slipped away to the hocking hills for a few days of relaxation.... they stayed at a wonderful log cabin on forty secluded acres near old man's cave....they hiked the conkle hollow ridge, cantwell cliffs, trekked out to airplane rock, and made a luncheon trip to the moonville tunnel on the zaleski trail....

it was just wonderful....
