Anyone have anything like this?” 10:48:39 AM 9/12/06 “Do you have to stand up, bent over a lot? That does it for me. Stretching helps to a certain degree. I know there's a lot of advice in other threads here regarding hip and joint pain, but darned if I can remember the names of the threads at the moment. I have a 4 year old standing at my shoulder hollering at me to get moving.” 10:58:18 AM 9/12/06 “Thanks, I'll try some streatching---- I do a lot of bending and lifting at work.” 11:06:52 AM 9/12/06 “could be arthritis (even if you're young) - could be bursitis (also any age) try ice for 20 minutes at a time for a while and see if that helps - if so, might be bursitis - if that didn't help, try an anti-anflammatory, if that helps, more likely arthritis if it doesn't go away in 2 weeks after doing those things, have your doctor check it out last edited: 9/12/06 11:08:58 AM” 11:08:16 AM 9/12/06 “I'll try that too--- I've had to slow down my work outs because it really hurts after---enough that it effects how I walk.” 11:10:40 AM 9/12/06 “hope you feel better of course, read precautions on anti-inflammatories before taking ;) I've had both, and both are very painful at times. good luck” 11:14:19 AM 9/12/06 “I suffer from pain in my hips from time to time too. The pain is right in the ball joint of my femur and hipbone. Normally it’s worse after doing a long dayhike (15 or more miles), but not always. Most of the time it takes a day or two before I feel 100%, but I have had pain last as long as 2 to 3 weeks. I’m not really sure how to prevent it. Stretching seems do nothing for me in preventing it.” 11:14:20 AM 9/12/06 “lumberzac, sounds more like arthritis, but it's very hard to pinpoint pain in that area, it can be deceptive - sometimes it's actually your back and the pain shows up in the hip area!! -- could be caused by "favoring" one side when you hike, indicating another problem, like in the knees or elsewhere last edited: 9/12/06 11:17:41 AM” 11:16:34 AM 9/12/06 “joint pain? don't let it burn down so close to you'r fingers..” 11:20:12 AM 9/12/06 “I’ll have to keep an eye on it the next time it happens to see if I’m doing anything unusual. So far this year I’ve been pain free, with my hips anyway. The last time they gave me any problems was last year during hunting season in November or October. My knees have been giving me some minor pain this year which seemed to start after one got drove into a rock on the Dix Range. I probably just need more time to let them heal. They felt a lot better during my trip on the Long Trail than they did on a dayhike I did a few weeks before. They did have some soreness, but no more than I expected; I was really worried about the one knee locking up on that trip, but it never happened.” 11:28:24 AM 9/12/06 “I get super bad joint pain, especially in my hip joints, when I'm pregnant. There were mornings when I couldn't walk and would have to crawl until the pain decreased. But I get it to a lesser degree when not pregnant as well sometimes. I find that taking a joint care supplement does miracles. My favorite one is made by Natrol. It's Omega-3 Glucosamine. You can find it at Wal-Mart, comes in a purple box. The dosage calls for three pills a day, but because of the expense I take two a day and it still works. I can tell a real difference when I take it regularly. If you look in the vitamin and supplement aisle you will find lots of options.” 4:38:07 PM 9/12/06 “After much practice rolling a joint stopped being such a pain.” 6:03:27 PM 9/12/06 “Smoking out of a bowl that doesn't have broken glass should eliminate the problem” 6:17:14 PM 9/12/06 “My guess is it's most likely bursitis and it can be a bear to deal with if you have a bad case of it. Bursitis is generally a condition of getting older, an overuse injury or can be a result of bad biomechanics. The treatment is rest, stretching the right muscles in the hip joint, combined with specific strengthening exercises. A doctor can inject the bursa with steroids or even drain it if you need that done. In bad cases the bursa can be removed. The hip joint has about five bursa in it and the most common one to get bursitis is in the trochanter bursa right on the outside of the ball joint. It allows the tendon to glide over the outer joint. When inflamed it can cause pain and a poppping or snappping sound as can other bursa in the hips. I had hip bursitis really bad last year and it still comes back if I do too much or not include enough rest days. The best way to deal with bursitis is not to get it in the first place because once you do it can keep coming back. Don't overdo anything and be sure to include enough rest days so you recover enough, be sure shoes or boots fit well and use proper insoles if you have under or overpronation problems. Bursitis that becomes chronic can lead to arthritis in the joint. last edited: 9/12/06 7:13:55 PM” 7:07:48 PM 9/12/06 “Sometimes muscle trigger points can mimic bursitis.” 9:38:26 PM 9/12/06 “You are drawing too fast, and getting too much hot smoke in your lungs. Perhaps a nice bong is in order?” 10:14:29 PM 9/12/06 “water definitely helps” 10:15:01 PM 9/12/06 “Even though I've cut way back on my workout rutine to see if that would help the problem, i am still having pain----Its especially bad after walking, even as short a distance as a mile. I'm going to probebly cancel on my vacation trips next week :( This is very frustraiting. I really don't want to go to the doc, this just seems so stupid.” 1:56:13 PM 9/18/06 “you and I both need a blood test.” 2:16:13 PM 9/18/06 “go to the doc SC - they won't hurt you” 2:19:20 PM 9/18/06 “Get your little butt to the DOC, NOW!” 2:25:37 PM 9/18/06 “if you didn't roll your joints so tight they wouldn't be so painful” 2:42:49 PM 9/18/06 “Dang, thriftyhiker stole the words right out of my fingers.” 2:44:38 PM 9/18/06 “Now there was a time where I dropped mine in my lap and I was wearing nylon running shorts...that was painful” 2:45:47 PM 9/18/06 “Just about the time I married Cottonsox I developed gout. Man did it hurt. Then I got something prescribed for it (for the life of me I can't come up with the name). Got rid of it and haven't been bothered since.” 2:50:01 PM 9/18/06 “Sorry to hear about the lingering pain and having to cancel your plans. Some soft tissue injuries can last a long time and while you are healing it usually means temporarily stopping the activity that caused it including anything that irritates it while it heals. Tendonitis can take a year to heal as can bursitis depending on how bad you have it and the older you are, in general the longer it will take. When I had bursitis really bad, I thought I could still go cycling since hiking caused the injury. I was wrong and cycling made it worse, much worse. Sometimes you just have to stop all activities except stretching and exercises for the muscles involved and then when you are healed just start over. It's tough to swallow for anyone that likes to be active, but sometimes you just have to sit back for a while and give the injury a chance to heal itself. I hope you start feeling better soon and it doesn't turn out to be a bad injury.” 3:45:46 PM 9/18/06 “:( I wish I could help you but the best advice here is to see a doctor. Consider going to an ortho doc that will do some xrays/etc. I did this when I had knee pain and the doc spotted my problem right away (at least the one associated with my knee). Does naproxen sodium (Alive or similar generic) help? I use this when I overtrain (which hasn't been that often this last year...hehe)” 3:54:09 PM 9/18/06 “Searching for ideas for better pain relief on hips & joints and found this thread. Hey Spirit, did it ever get better? My pain has gotten so bad, I've actually consented to a doctor's appt. YUCK!” 3:45:35 AM 3/23/07 “Mines gotten better. The pain went away after stopping walking/jogging for a good while. Sucked though, as I was really enjoying the jogging.” 5:26:15 AM 3/23/07 “doing glucosamine yet Pammie? if not start doing it - takes a while to kick in but it really helps me” 6:55:19 AM 3/23/07 “Go to the Celedrin thread. Glucosamin is old news!” 6:57:35 AM 3/23/07 “hey, should'nt Nimblenutz be injecting some snide remark in here about a painful joint?” 7:00:40 AM 3/23/07 “Sassafras - I tend to wait a long while on these new things just to see if they are as good as advertised and that there are no bad side-effects - in other words I want a few years of history of other people's results before I will try something different.” 7:06:04 AM 3/23/07 “Hog On Ice - Wait a few years? No thanks. I may not have a few years! I want relief today.” 8:08:53 AM 3/23/07 “nowslimmerif I were in pain it would be different but glucosamine is controlling my pain for now so I see no need to try something new” 8:58:55 AM 3/23/07 “early adopters = guinea pigs? VBG” 9:24:01 AM 3/23/07 “Wait a few years? No thanks. I may not have a few years! I want relief today.” nowslimmer 8:08:53 AM 3/23/07 that is true most folks on here aren't as old as dirt ;)” 9:27:16 AM 3/23/07 “glucosamine/chondroiten/msm calcium w/D & zinc The topamax I take for seizure/migraine used to take care of my hip pain which is bursitis. (It changes how your central nervous system perceives pain) But it stopped working several months ago, the pain has become worse in the last several weeks. The knees don't hurt as if injured, they just ache. It all just aches together and has gotten to the point that I can't handle it. I've been trying ibuprofen, tylenol, naproxen and aspirin and combinations of all or several. Going into my doctor soon. I hate going to the doctor, shades of my mother ya know. (type mother into search)” 10:27:00 AM 3/23/07 “no thank you. =)” 11:27:51 AM 3/23/07 “Pammie, long hot bath, deep massage and anti inflammatory.” 3:00:41 PM 3/23/07 Re Joint Pain Supplements 12:16:13 PM 4/11/07 “Joints are supposed to help with pain, not cause it.” 12:17:41 PM 4/11/07 “Works for me:)” 12:54:26 PM 4/11/07 “Spirit, if its painful you are rollin' 'em too tight.” 1:54:47 PM 4/11/07 “I actually went to the trouble of finding out which ones did contain the amount they purported to contain, and it still doesn't work. I found a link on kneeguru” 2:56:12 PM 4/11/07 “... OK, so I have to tell you something. I feel totally vindicated by this article. For ages now my wife and I have been feuding about this. I have said this supplement is useless since I took it for several months and it did NOTHING for me whatsoever... and it was really expensive. So I felt ripped off. My wife said it was a wonder drug and that when she was taking it the stuff really helped her. Well here is the answer: Swanson Health Products’ Premium Brand Glucosamine & Chondroitin had only 8 percent of promised chondroitin. So apparently the Glucosamine did nothing for me and there was basically not enough Chondroitin for me to know if it had an effect or not. I have no idea what brand she was taking but as far as I am concerned I still feel ripped off but for different reasons now.” 8:29:15 AM 4/12/07 “Sounds to me as though there should be some law suits in this area. I would expect it as a follow-up to the testing.” 9:04:44 AM 4/12/07 “Last night I actually woke myself up several times crying out from the knee pain. This sucks. I have a question for you joint pain sufferers. Since I did not suffer any pain during or immediately after my backpack, but about a week later, I am trying to figure out what the cause of this current pain is. I'm wondering, I started using calcium as a new supplement just a few weeks before that backpack. Do you think calcium can cause joint pain?” 1:34:09 PM 4/12/07 “possibly a bucket handle tear in the meniscus - initially OK then it flops into the wrong position and hurts” 7:28:13 AM 4/13/07 “Pamela, if you have Pseudogout it will. I had to stop taking supplements. BUT, you would know (your knee would be the size of a softball), and it's really rare that anyone under the age of 60 gets it. If you think you may have it the Dr can draw synovial fluid out of the affected joint and look for CA crystals in it. If you do have it there is absolutely nothing you can do except live w/ it.” 7:43:46 AM 4/13/07
