Just give me time frame...........I do not live in Damascus but do live at the Base of WhitTop and Mt Rogers.

I have trekked that section Erwin to Damascus, been at least 4 years and need to hit this one again.

I have a 3 week trip in August to Colorado , so if you plan on any time before then I can do that.................just need a 2 week pre start date to put in for the time off.

Thats good to know LWolf46. I visit that area quit a bit.

Fridge,
I'm not sure when in 2007 I will be making that trip. I have a potential "West Coast Trail" trip with some (other) friends to schedule first, then I'll know when I might get in the Erwin to Damascus trip. I'll let you know.

sweetpeastu / you mentioned you may drive to the parking area FR 832 Saunders Shelter Trail. It is located on rt 58 just past BearTree Lake entrance, on your left. There is a sign that says Sunders shelter 3 miles, this is wrong, it is actually 2 miles. If you do descide to take this trail there will be several spur turn outs leading to fields, stay on the main trail Blue Blaze. You will come to TWO green metal fence poles and the spur trail to the right, continue through the green poles you will see a blue blaze on a rusted metal post. Continue on and you will intersect with the AT which you can take up the hill to a sign to Saunders shelter or you can continue on the Blue Blaze Saunders Trail which will take you to the shelter. This is a new shelter and has a beautiful view with excellent Tent camping in and around big Pine trees. The spring is located just down hill aprox .02 mile with a white PVC pipe. There is a good privy located just to the left rear of the shelter. The shelter itself is very well kept by the MountRogers Trail Club.

Hey thanks for the info. I also plan on drivin over to the first nights camp site (after I day hike, hopefully with ya'll, to the summit). Which parking lot should I park in near White Top? I'm not exactly sure where ya'll are camping that night, and theres so many different parking lots over there.

ok Fridge, strike that, When exactly are u guys meetin in the backpackers lot? The plan is to hike with you guys to the first nights camp. Then day two, ENS and I will find alternate (or same way) back to Massie Gap to shuttle to Saunders Shelter (perhaps we'll park one car in Damscus and con't to hike with group depending on ...my health). lol. THANKS! About the meeting time--it takes me about 3 hours tops to get there. I think I've still got your cell number. Will call u if we get stuck in horrible traffic--otherwise, we'll be there!
