CHICAGO BREAKDOWN
This Week's Show

Studs Terkel
September 16, 2006
This week on A Prairie Home Companion. our final summer repeat!! A compilation featuring two shows, one to be recorded this week in Chicago from the Gary Comer Youth Center. Gary Comer is the founder of Land's End, a longtime friend to APHC, and one of our nation's great philanthropists. Featured on that show will be gospel singer Jearlyn Steele, award winning pianist Reginald Robinson, world music journeymen Radio Maqam, Chicago community builders The South Shore Drill Team, and our own Rich Dworksy and Fred Newman. The second show is one we did in Chicago in 2002 from the Auditorium Theater, featuring the great American author, historian, and broadcaster Studs Terkel, legendary jazz figure Franz Jackson, and the hero of the modern harmonica, Howard Levy. Join us this Saturday for a very special Chicago windstorm of a show. We promise you'll be blown away.

I listen at http://www.wuot.org/, Web Radio at the Univ. of Tennessee. It starts at 5PM CDST.

Look at what they promise.

This has not happened since the 70's, when my brother directed a NY Show in Chicago. They always brought the director from NY along with those shows, but that time they asked my brother, a Chicago musician, to direct the show. It was a success thoughout the entire scheduled four weeks.

StoveStomper - Studs Terkel's name appeared in the copy, as it was picked up from under his picture. Why it was there may be explained on the program. I thought that perhaps it was the author and left it there to give him credit.

Maybe he'll be on the program!

I've read Stud's stuff. I've met him. But as a Sociologist, I think much of his stuff is crap. His stuff is a nice read for the airplane or in front of the fireplace, but as ana academic--well I've already said that.

I heard Garrison speak at a dedication to the Comer Children's Hospital Wing at University of Chicago's Rockefeller Chapel (gorgeous BTW) a few years ago. Generally I like him and I have always been a big fan of APHC since it could be based on my home town. However, that night, my sister-in-law and I were incensed by much of what he had to say. The dedication happened the day after the presidential election, and of course, Bush had won. I wouldn't have minded a couple digs at him or at the GOP. But he went far beyond that and far beyond anything related to a childrens hospital. Among other things, he seriously suggested more than once that the right to vote should be taken away from all born again Christians.

Now that a couple years have passed I can listen to his show again without letting it bother me. I just thought it was an inappropriate place and time to start throwing out his personal political views.

Really? That's about the only thing I like about the pompous old windbag.
