not good, but then it's not recent either....notice there are no shiny spots or signs of new damage...it's been missing for some time now....

I'd avoid rough driving, but don't hire a wrecker just yet either.....

The only thing I can see is a broken stud on a sway bar. I've held them in place with a coat hanger untill I got home. Company car & it was fixed in an hour.

Yeah, the sway bar is really only gonna make a difference if you're driving pretty hard. I would have them check the tie rods, tho, if they didn't. The ones on my s10 were hanging on by the mud. Those are kinda important.

Tie rods are what turn the front wheels from left to right. if they come loose, the front wheels do the splits. not so good at freeway speeds, and the mid nineties s-10's had some problems with reliability there. Just a good thing to check. If they were replacing sway bar studs, they SHOULD have checked the tie rod ends.

Don't believe 'em SC. Tie rods are just another ploy for the dealerships to make a butt load of cash off you. You don't need any. They are like muffler bearings, and turn signal fluid.

Aren't you glad I'm watchin out for ya? ;-)

Anybody know anything about cars?

I drive an 86 Buick Century, I've been having trouble with it starting cold, when I say cold I mean anything below 55 degrees, which is going to be a problem soon here in MN. I had it looked at, well, all of last winter - same problem, the garage I brought it to didn't know what was wrong, gave me a new battery, new distributor cap, new.... blah blah, and they never fixed the problem, just charged me a bunch of $. Any Ideas what I might be looking at here?

I had very bad experience with an 81 Buick Century I owned some time ago. It was, by far, the most unreliable car I have ever owned. I was constantly replacing something. Plus, its acceleration was pathetic for getting such mediocre gas mileage.

As far as your car goes, if you really want to keep it, it could be a number of problems. Spark plug wires and/or spark plugs are one potential area to investigate. Maybe an oxygen sensor.

I'm not sure if 1986 cars have one of those universal ECU plugs. Go to an Auto Zone and see if they can do an engine check. It is free.

Also, what engine type do you have? That yeat Buick may have had one of two or three different types of engines, including 2 V-6 models (2.8 or 3.8 litre).

Check the Carb....
Simplisticly speaking, an engine should run if it's getting gas and spark to the cylinders...

If the Carburetor fails to hold a vaccum, the fuel returns to the tank rather than remaining available at the carburetor, and it takes a while for the fuel pump to raise the fuel to the carburetor each time the engine is started...

Best bet: spend the money up front to have a dealer look at it...around here, it's 65.00 to have them check it out, no charge(Yeah right) if they fix the car....

once you know specifically what's wrong, you can have it repaired somewhere cheaper, without having someone try to guess at it.

Worth the 65.00 for the lack of agravation.

or do the work yourself...i do this a lot with auto and home repairs...have a pro diagnose the problem then fix it my self...that saves you the time and money of fixing the wrong thing over and over

I guess that is not as bad as the lady's car I pulled up behind today at a stoplight. Her car was on fire. I put it out with two bottles of water. The positive feed to the starter shorted on something and caught the rubber covering on fire, which caught the greasy motor on fire. It was smoking a lot and burning slowly up the motor and the wire. It was and S10 also.

SuperTroll, good call. It could definitely be a carb problem. And good idea to get a shop to diagnose the problem.

They key is finding a reputable shop and shop around a little for pricing, too. But the reputable shop is much more important that the cheapest price.

Word of mouth is the best way to find the best mechanics, but don't rely on limited feedback . . .

Yeah, check around. A good shop is going to fix what needs to be fixed, and nothing else. We found a good mechanic, and have followed him to at least three different shops. He's starting to think we have his phone tapped. ;0)

simer.....nooooooooooooooooo to the caravan. try having someone turn your distributor slightly as the car is running. if it runs any better when turned, find the best position for the distributor(where the car runs best). then shut the car off and see if it is any easier to start when cold.

Or, better yet, don't buy a caravan. They have known problems with overheating. Look at the toyota minivans. The old Sienna will drive you crazy from sitting on the seat, but they will run for eternity.
