RE: Quote for the Day!
The Essence of Survival...
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster
than the fastest lion or it will be killed...
Every morning a lion wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle...
When the sun comes up, you'd better be running

RE: Quote for the Day!
Roads go ever ever on
Over rock and under tree
By caves where never sun has shone
By streams that never find the sea

Over snow by winter sown
And through the merry flowers of June
Over grass and over stone
And under mountains in the moon

(Radagast knows who said it)

Yeah, sorta. It was the first stanza of verse that Bilbo spoke upon seeing his home again after his adventure. It pops into my head unbidden ay times when a stretch of clear trail lays in front of me just right. Damn near brings tears to my eyes sometimes.

I'm not afraid of standing still,
I'm just afraid of being bored,
I'm not afraid of speaking my mind
I'm just afraid of being ignored,
I'm not afraid of happy endings,
I'm just afraid my life won't work that way.
I'm not afraid of the gun in my hand,
I'm just afraid that it will hurt like hell

"The Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the Earth", Chief Seattle

"Onward throught the fog". Seen on a bumper sticker.

Don't any one get mad over this one. I saw it on a bumper sticker and couldn't believe my eyes..."Braise the Lord! At 350 for 2-3 hours until tender".

RE: Quote for the Day!
i should just let this go, but i hate to see this myth get perpetuated. chief seattle (actually chief sealth) didn't really say those words. chief sealth's speech was actually written by a screenwriter, Ted Perry, for the 1972 movie "Home". perry heard an author read a version of the chiefs' actual speech and used the text as the basis for a new, fictitious speech for a film on pollution and ecology.

the film's producers revised perry's script without his knowledge, removed his name from the film credits, sent off tens of thousands of posters with the "speech" on it to viewers who requested it, and so began the confusion that exists today. i hear that perry is more than a little miffed about the whole deal.

don't get me wrong, i love the sentiment. i felt sorta betrayed when i found out the real story.

Radagast, aren't there though. Tolkien's writings made a huge impression on me as a young teen. Remember when everybody & his dog had a CB a few (oh my god, 20 years is a few?) years back? I caught all kinds of crap for the handle "Gandalf". The rednecks coudn't appreciate it & the cool people thought it was pretentious if not presumptuous.

Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures.
Remember: when someone annoys you it takes 42
muscles in your face to frown. But it only takes 4
muscles to extend your arm and bitch-slap the
idiot upside the head...

"If we work upon marble, it will perish; if
we work upon brass, time will efface it; if
we rear temples, they will crumble into dust;
but if we work upon immortal minds and
instill into them just principles, we are then
engraving that upon tablets which no time
will efface, but will brighten and brighten to

"We shall never understand the natural environment until we see it as a living organism. Land can be healthy or sick, fertile or barren, rich or poor, lovingly nurtured or bled white. Our present attitudes and laws governing the ownership and use of land represent an abuse of the concept of private property.... Today you can murder land for private profit. You can leave the corpse for all to see and nobody calls the cops."
