The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's life may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water,
and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief.
I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light.
For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

"
Sense Of Purpose

everybody chokes
when they see someone cut down in their prime
it may not show when you look at me
but I know I'm in mine
I'm potent, baby, I'm potent
dangerous to the naked eye
rest your head on this bed of mother's pride
and find out why

don't you wanna take me home?
don't you wanna take me home?

give me a sense of purpose
a real sense of purpose now
give me a sense of purpose
a real sense of purpose now

bully boys don't bother me
I purse my lips and they run away
guys like you who are gentle and true
don't come around here everyday
I'm potent, baby, I'm potent
just one swing of me would get most guys smashed
but a drop of yours makes me stagger and swerve
I guess I'm outclassed

everybody chokes
when they see someone cut down in their prime
take this plea to your heart
- lift me in mine

don't you wanna take me home?
don't you wanna take me home?

give me a sense of purpose
a real sense of purpose now
give me a sense of purpose
a real sense of purpose now

give me a sense of purpose
a real sense of purpose now
give me a sense of purpose
a real sense of purpose now"

A young Native American boy was talking to his grandfather about how he felt. He said, 'I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is an vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is a loving and compassionate one. Which wolf will win the fight in my heart?'

The grandfather answered: 'The one you feed.'

Ambrose Bierce has been dead for almost 100 years, so I guess that American's geography has always sucked. Of course, we have our own REALLY BIG COUNTRY, so I guess learning about where all the other ones is isn't high on our list.

Here's a true story (I just love these, don't you?) from the time when I was dating the girl that I'm sooooooo glad I didn't marry. I was helping her with her college geography class, specifically on the countries of Asia. Now, it's sort of excusable if you don't know the difference between Malasia and Malaya, but when I asked her to point out Japan, she couldn't do it. I was flabbergasted. This was the 80's, when Americans were obsessed with the Japanese economy eating our lunch. Trade talks with the Land of the Rising Sun were in the news every damn night, and she couldn't find Japan on a friggin' map. Her excuse?

The Best Advice
"Do not burn yourself out. Be as I am-a reluctant enthusiast...a part time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it is still there. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out younder and explore the forest, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks. Run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious an dawesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much: I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this: You will outlive the bastards."

Rituals and Routines...
How can I enhance the routine of my day, change the channel to a more interesting perspective?

Today may look like an other day, but it doesn't have to feel like any other day. What could turn today into more? What would wake things up for you, startle you, bring you into the sublime pulchritude of the present?

Rituals are routines with a coat of meaning applied. Self-nurturing rituals can make flossing your teeth a vertible celebration of soul.

Today's Intention: Enlivening my routines and Noticing my rituals.

By Abraham Joshua Herschel
To Mock the Dawn

We can never sneer at the stars, mock the dawn or scoff at the totality of being. Sublime grandeur evokes unhesitating unflinching awe. Away from the immense, cloistered in our own concepts, we may scorn and revile everything.

But standing between earth and sky, we are silenced by the sight…

a quote from Mikhail Epstein

"The more accidental the phenomenon, the more divine its nature, for the divine is what has not been envisioned, what cannot be deduced from general rules, nor irreducible to them."

Can be rephrased as:

"The more accidental, the more true." -Russian author Boris Pasternak

I think this is particularly true in science where the least expected outcome is often the most interesting and leads to a real breakthrough in thinking. If the mind is open.....
