They wrote in the old days that it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country. But in modern war, there is nothing sweet nor fitting in your dying. You will die like a dog for no good reason.

Once and for all the idea of glorious victories won by the glorious army must be wiped out. Niether side is glorious. On either side they're just frightened men
messing their pants and they all want the same thing - not to lie under theearth, but to walk upon it - without crutches.

TPM: Think! A big part of the Iraq situation is that we weren't asked to police anything. Even when the US tried to bribe, bully and cajole support for the war, most of the world opposed it.

A bit of 'Martian' verse for ynami2....

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

Wm. Shakespeare (1564--1616)
King Richard II. Act ii. Sc. 1.
