“I like that PJ quote Birch. I don't think I heard it before, but it fits in with the other reminders I've been getting that we can't let our grand ideas and schemes justify failure to do the small scale acts of decency, responsibility and kindness.

Somehow I'm reminded of a guy I knew who was a hard core left winger, supposedly identified with the working class and pulling for a revolution. He never tipped waitresses or waiters - he said that just smoothed over the problem, "People in the food services sector need to organize and demand better wages and conditions ane I'm ready to support them in that."
