Cast Your Vote!
Hi Everyone:

I'm Peter Flax, the executive editor of Backpacker magazine. I normally just lurk around these parts, but I was hoping some of you might be able to help us with a destination story I'm working with.

In a nutshell, we're asking hiking enthusiasts to vote for the best classic dayhike in every state in the nation. Below I'll post a link to a survey that would allow you to vote for your favorites. If you have 10 minutes to spare, you can make your voice heard. Plus, one lucky participant will win a brand new Big Agnes tent!

While we do lots of other stories talking about little-known trails or hikes in undiscovered wilderness areas, this story is more about the most classic hikes in each state--and getting feedback from hard-core hikers about which ones are great, and which ones don't rate.

I've been told that the survey doesn't work well if you're using Safari on a Mac, so if that sounds like you, hopefully you can vote on a different computer or operating system.

Anyway, whether or not you vote, thanks for reading. And stay tuned for the results in our January/February issue.

Happy hiking this fall!
Cheers,
Peter Flax

As was noted on the "other side," it doesn't work with Safari on a Mac. (Trust me on that one! ;-)

Will try again on IE on the Mac. Last time I tried, it crashed on the last screen to submit.

Interesting. I never realized I've never hiked any traditional trails in my own state.

I like how for New York, it lists Mount Marcy as a dayhike. Which route? I can think of at least 5 different routes off the top of my head.

I was on two of the hikes in Iowa, Geode and Mines of Spain, and Two for Illinois, Starved Rock and, Pallisades. But for Colorado not one of the trails listed have I ever been on.

I actually listed another Colorado hike on the comment page. Some of those others they listed dont seem to be the best hikes, just popular.

Same with Washington in NH. And Franconia Ridge? The whole ridge or just the most crowded parts?? a loop? From where?

Not to mention that Washinton would be way down on a best hikes list unless it was just part of a hike or MEB wanted a Woopie Pie :)

Another question
Why is the survey for the best dayhike? Wouldn't it make more sense to have a survey on the best backpacking route, seeing as the name of the magazine is Backpacker?

in case it is not obvious - vote for some trail that you will never hike again - if your favorite trail makes their list you can kiss peace and quiet goodbye if you ever hike it again

Here's a question: On the survey what's the difference between "none of the above" and "haven't done any of these hikes"? Don't those mean the same thing to the question "What's your favorite hike?"

While I love Isle Royale, can any trail there be considered a dayhike given the fact that a prearranged plane or 6-hour ferry transport is required to even get there? To me a dayhike is a hike that doesn't require a whole lot of fuss to get to or to do.

Backpacker is a good mag but I ain't telling them my favorite places. Then they would publish them. All the choices I had were for the usuual well known dayhikes, places I usually never go.

I tried it again on a Mac on IE. Crashed the exact same place, trying to type in my e-mail (followed by name).... right at the end and aggravating!

Trained in survey writing/research there is a difference.
"None of the above" will probably be interpreted that you have hiked some of the above, but you rate others better. Whereas haven't done any of these hikes, means you don't know anything about 'em.

Cynic in me wonders if they're not just plugging the hikes. Naw, not Backpacker!

When he posted it over on BP, I did it, just to see how bad the choices for WA were. They were odd choices really. Not ones I would have picked! (Which is good really ;-)
Anyhoo, if you use a Mac, if you are in Firefox it works.
I just wish they hadn't listed Spray Park at Rainier. It is a overused area, that is fragile. Better to have listed the trails at Paradise-that are designed to handle the crowds. Spray Park sits at the end of a long dirt road, with a small parking lot....and too many people that cut wandering trails.

Why in the heck would anyone pay $85.00 and spend 8 hours (at least) on a ferry on Lake Superior to DAYHIKE on Isle Royale?! What a weird place to put as a dayhike choice. I'd think Jordan River pathway or Manistee River Trail would've been a much better choice.
