Its not snow, its called rime-ice or freezing fog:
Better look fast, it'll be gone by 9:00 this morning probably.

It's pretty cool in Townsend tonight. The Festival is going on this weekend about a quarter mile from me. I can sit on the porch and listen to the Bluegrass. Had to put on fleece though.

chili, you're not meeting up with ENS and crew? I am packed and ready. Well, I'll be leaving tomorrow morning. Got to be back my Monday though, so I'll be cutting it short.

Correction: I was informed today by my step-son who drives a gravel truck that he witnessed a brief period of fairly heavy snow falling where he was delivering a load of gravel to yet another mountain development in Avery County, NC at about 4,000 in elevation last Friday, September 29, which is the day the Mt. Mitchell white stuff was observed on the webcam posted to start this thread.

I saw snow in the Smokies this weekend. There were patches all over from the northside of Chapman, down along Balsam Mountain and up around Guyot. The summit ridge had pretty good amount of it too. I even boot skied while descending Guyot back to the AT.

It got down to around 29* at Icewater Springs Lean-to early Friday morning. It was sleeting as I was falling asleep. It was also sleeting while descending LeConte Thursday afternoon on the Boulevard Trail.

They say, snow has been seen in the NC mountains even in August and July some years ago

although, I expect most such reports were actually hail or accumulated hail.

I was told snow has been recorded on Mitchell every month of the year.
