“HPM just directed to the powerpoint presentation for Laurel's new school, which she'll be starting at the end of August. The new school is called Barnette and their mascot is an eagle. It starts with one of the worst animations I've seen, a badly cropped rectangular photo of an eagle against a blue sky doing apparently random loops around a white background page, with other photos of the school. I laughed from the horror of it. That had got to be the worst bit of site related animation I've ever seen.”

“Lordy. Laurel's in second grade and already has (what feels like) mountains of homework. Just for tonight, she has a 14 word spelling list, plus writing a sentence for each word, plus 20+ minutes of reading, plus math worksheets, plus addition chart memorization.”

“My son is in 4th grade and this is the first year he's had a considerable amount of homework. He's lucked up in past years getting teachers that don't give much homework. That does seem like a lot of homework for a second grader!”

“Laurel had homework every night in kindergarten, too. It mostly consisted of US reading to her, then helping read the same book herself.”

“Its called homework because kids brought work home with them to do outside of school. I did it. My parents did it. Their parents did it. When did it become the norm that homework was supposed to be completed in the classroom?”

“Hyway, don't think anyone is complaining about kids having homework here. It's the extent of it that is the problem. My nephew who is now entering 6th grade this year, had homework last year that required him to stay up until 9 - 10 most nights.”

“i like the way my algebra homework is done. we do it online, and get immediate feedback so we can figure out what we did wrongly. the handouts also include the answer, because it is the process that is important, not the final answer”

“LZ, what time does the kid start their homework?

Not saying this is what happens with your nephew, but I here parents say that then when I ask them it turns out the kid doesn't even get done with after school programs, sports, etc, dinner, and chores (if they have them) until after 7 pm. Then of course they have a few minutes of TV before starting homework.”

“what kid goes to school till 5pm? I was off the bus by 2:45-3pm tops. Did my mountains of homework while I was home alone till about 4:30-5pm, could play with friends until dinner was ready once mom got home, then they checked my homework and I corrected/finished it, read a book, tv or played until bedtime.

After 8th grade I started having to stay up till 9-10 to complete some of it.”

“Jesus, what sadistic bastard gives a 6th grader 4 hours of homework a night?”

“I still don't believe the kid works continuously for 4-5 hours. He probably starts at 5, goofs off instead of working, then eats dinner, kills time doing other stuff afterward then finally gets back at it around 8, then the parents get exasperated and start haranguing him and then he gets serious about it and finishes the task. Or he had 3 weeks to work on a project, its do tomorrow and he hasn't done a lick of work on it yet.

I will be entirely shocked if it turns out the kid actually spends 4 hours a night actually doing homework.”

“Shute, I never answered XL's question. I taught English as a Second Language at the senior high school level in a rural, French language high school for thirty-two years (in Huntingdon, Quebec).

It is an agricultural area, stuck on the New York State border and about half and half English and French speaking.

My buddy teaches in the English school in the neighbouring village of Ormstown.”

“OKAY..I can speak with some authority. My son (a few years ago) had been enduring harassment and #&%!$ in school. I did not know about it because his MOTHER had just been telling him to "take it". When he tried to scare the other kids off he got arrested for what he SAID.

One of my other friends had the same situation. His boy finally punched the bully as hard as he could in the mouth.

BOOM...teachers and other related thugs come running. My friend left the office and went to the school. He was talking to the Principal, teachers and the "resource officer" (campus cop).

When he brought up the bullying they all admitted they knew about it...but claimed "there was nothing they could do".

So my friend called a lawyer and suggested they stop talking until they get to court and they all find out what percentage of the School Budget he was going to get after a lawsuit....

Amazingly the weenies backed down. His son got one day of in school suspension, the bully got sent to alternative school...FUNNY isn't it

My advice 666 is call go see the principal. (if you can legally tape the conversation do it) explain the problem. Ask for a resolution, if the Principal offers none, suggest you call your School Board Member (that makes em sweat). Then explain that the gloves come off next time.”

“Teachers have exactly the same problems as parents these days. Everyone expects each to have a responsibility for bringing up and raising children in a law abiding and all American way.!!!! Just try it and your on the wrong end of the DCFS or a law suit for mistreatment. Anyone here suffer greatly from a kick up the ass as a kid for wrong doing? Society says kids have so many rights !!! hey when they survive to 18 they get rights... till then they get the upbringing they need to survive not sent to their room with a laptop Ipod 54inch TV internet, facebook, and call that punishment. I do not condone mistreatment but until parent teacher rights to dish out suitable punishment society is doomed. Ask Grandma what would happen if she back sassee her father or a teacher.!! Oh the inhumanity.”

“My son was having issues with a kid he has known for years. Real smart ass kid. The principal was threatening to suspend my kid for bulling. He has straight a's never in trouble and this other kid has been kicked out of 3 middle schools since 6th grade, this was last year...7th grade. Anyway, his dad had a talk with the principal and suggested he take a look at the records of both kids to figure out who the trouble maker is...nothing more came of it as far as I know. Unfortunaly, sometimes, school officials just dont take the time to look at all the facts. They jump on the first most obvious solution which isnt always the right one. (my kid is about 2x the size of the bully kid..he was defending another kid who was being picked on)..anyway...”
