I just had a nonhiker ask me what we do if someone "crosses rainbow bridge" while we are out....I told her we divide the good gear up. ( I was joking really or was I?) She looked at me and asked, "How do you know what everyone gets?"

I told her there were exact guidelines on what each person could take (LOL) and how you knew what was YOURS. Anyone want to help...I am working on the RULES (LOL)....

This is the same sweetie who I told her printer was acting up becuase she had the Disgronifier off 2 points. MIS is threatening to destroy my credit rating (LOL)....

Lets see and good compass/navagation stuff would go to the navigator in the group

the primary cook gets the stoves/pots pans etc.

Damn! I think saleboard took possession of XL cause I didn’t understand a damn thing he just said. LOL!

Is this a “If someone dies who gets what?” thread?

"The power of christ compels you! The power of christ compels you! Saleboard come OUT!"

No but seriousely, I don't want anything someone's got just because I don't want to carry it.

Does "rainbow bridge" mean "pergatory", or is that when a woman has a period and can't backpack anymore?

Does the division of gear depend upon whether the death occured on the US or the Canadian side?

Perhaps the Canadians on the list can assist with this question

I believe on the Canadian side you get your gear plus a 15% premium?.

Every time I go away solo or ice climbing I leave my co-ordinates with a friend who'll be round to answer the 'phone and list his name as my emergency contact. Invariably the friend tells me what gear he wants from me if I don't come back.

Sorta warms my heart.

I've walked over that. No one took any of my gear, but I did have to pay $0.50 to get back into the US.

XL: Here's a rule:

1) Whoever volunteers to do the carving, so that we can dine on the remains gets first choice of gear. Whoever does the cooking gets second choice.

Crossing Rainbow Bridge???

I thought maybe that meant you started batting for the other team.

On a climbing/mountaineering trip, you take only what is required to get the rest of you out.

The gear still belongs to the deceased and their family (spouse, parents, whoever).

That's exactly what I thought as well, Marko. I couldn't figure out why one would need to give up their gear for that.

i believe if the rest of the group heard you commenting or discussing a piece of gear with the deceased...you get it. And no being greedy..if you have a tarptent...let someone else have stovestompers...errr

It also depends on if the members of the group are the same size as the deceased. An XL sized pack for HPM wouldn't do me or anyone else shorter than him any good. Boots, raingear, things like that, too.

This is all hypothetical, of course.
