I wanted to get out this weekend, so I conjured up a trip on the AT from Eckville to Port Clinton. This trip includes two great vistas- the Pinnacle and Pulpit Rock.

I met Nogranola, RichB, and MSilver at the Dunkin Donuts near Cabela's and we shuttled cars. RichB and MSilver were going to do a dayhike. NG and I were going the whole way and camping at Windsor Furnace where ENS was supposed to meet us Sat night.

It was great to meet NG and RichB looked great and hiked very strong.

We made the climb from Eckville and reached the Pinnacle. The place was crowded but the views were awesome. A small cave lies beneath the outcrop, so MSilver and I did some spelunking as we squeezed through the crevasses; I thought there was an opening at the end of one long section, but there wasn't, so we turned around. Great fun. Caves are wet and dark, so do bring a flashlight.

We continued on to Pulpit Rock, where we encountered an annoying climber/poet dude who couldn't stop talking about himself and how he picks up chicks at renaissance fairs; how the mountain we were on was his; how chicks mob him for his poetry at these renaissance fairs. MSilver than just had to offer that I wrote a few books, which meant I had to talk to him- I had to get out of there.

We walked down to camp and MSilver and Richb walked back to their cars. NG and I made camp and had a nice fire at the shelter where we met another hiker and talked into the night.

ENS arrived over night and we got up the next morning; ENS decided to go with us to Port Clinton. We made good time- 6 miles in about 2 hours. We ate at the famous Port Clinton Hotel- the fries are HUGE. Great trip.

I had a nice time Saturday and it was great hiking with Msilver, Jmitch and Nogranola again. We had some nice views and perfect weather for hiking. I wish my voice was better so I could communicate effectively, but maybe in a few more months it will be. I'm hoping to see you guys at Masten next weekend.

The Pinnacle was one of my first backpacking experiences what a great spot! As long as there is not a mob up there. I camped right on the cliff one night illegal I know but it was along time ago.

Been there many times.

Did you climb out the chimney from the cave? This is the first year I allowed my sons to climb up and out.

Fritz,

To me the chimney seemed just a bit too treacherous and slick to go up that spout. jmitch lead us with small flashlight about -oh I don't know- maybe 30 yards into the depths, at which point the passages became confusing and narrow in places to continue. We thought you could get through to some conjectured exit/entrance at an equally dubious opposite end. After we turned around to worm our way back to the place from which we submerged, and got above ground again, we calculated that the direction and incline we'd been heading in the cave would seem to have no obvious exit... maybe could end up in a twilght zone or time warp somewhere.

Nonetheless it was fun!

it probably leads to Fragle Rock. That would be my guess.
