I just ordered the guidebook, and when I get it in the mail, I will determine what section to hike. It won't be in the Red, but I promise it'll be good. Distance will be around 20 miles.

I was just reading about this trail the other day. I had no idea it was so damn long. I was wondering how many miles are on roads? Any idea?

looking at the delorme atlas, id say not alot. i heard there is a 5 mile roadwalk somewhere, but overall there doesnt seem to be much more than what the AT, that is to say, maybe 10-15 percent

And it's all in the Boone so you can camp anywhere along the whole thing too right? Man, that'd be an awesome hike to do end to end if ya had a ride back to the car.

the best part in my opinion is the section that takes you to a side trail leading to the Indian Stair Case.........STICKS knows the area well since he goes ther several times a year for the last 15 plus years...

I hike this trail up in Kentucky near Morehead where I have a place. The section in and around Cave Run Lake is very good and not used very much this time of year. I also was looking over the section where it crosses I-75 near Livingston, KY, but that has been over run by people in 4x4 trucks and such lately.

If I remember correctly, a section north of Laurel River Lake was really nice. I hiked to Van Hook Falls, beautiful place. At one point, the trail followed above a stream that carved a really cool slot canyon.

the southern section below laurel river lake is very nice- cumberland river and falls- yahoo falls- cool cliffs and overhangs. that might be the place to go.

Crash, thanks for the invite. I have to be home on NYE though. Some friends of mine rent out a bar somewhere in Cincinnati for the night and have a party with a ton of people every year.

I don't get that excited about it, because I don't know many of the people who come. A group of my friends went off to college together and came back with 500 friends. It's usually hard to dig around for the poeple I actually know. My wife has a good time though, and I have to go again this year.

If there's somewhere I cana bail out on the afternoon of the 31st, let me know. I could definitely do that.

Stu, to get to the trailhead you have to go through Oneida, TN. The southern terminus for Sheltowee is in Pickett State Park.

Hey Crash! I wish I could! I've got a date with Shawnee SF New Year's weekend. ;)

If I read correctly, the section you're doing is in Big South Fork? I really want to get down there sometime in the near future. I've heard good things about it. :)

Definitely! I'll be working on preparing for another trip to the Grand Canyon in May. It will be a lot more strenuous then the hike I did there in October.

I'll need to get some good conditioning hikes in. :)

what was your gc route?
crash bang

In Oct, it was Hermit - Tonto East - Bright Angel.

This coming May is will be South Bass - Tonto East - Bouche and out the last 2 miles on Hermit. If you've never read trail descriptions on those trails, check it out. Tonto is pretty much the same as anywhere else in the park, but South Bass and Bouche will be interesting...

Our chances of seeing anyone else while down there those 5 days are slim to none. :)

pickett state park to peters mt trailhead is only 15.6 miles (after that, its a big long roadwalk). is that enough for 3 days/2 nites?

if not, we can add some dayhiking in pickett on friday, or add a section of the jmt to make a 19-20 mile hike

thoughts?

Pickett State Park is on Tn hyway 154, just east of U.S. 127. It is near Jamestown, Tn and next to Big South Fork NRA, on the Ky/Tn border.

Friday night, I'll probably camp somewhere in Pickett, then we can hike Sat-Mon.

Crash- glad you are doing this one. It will mark a new precident for me, as I have been staying home or going to parties on NYE. It looks like it may be a small group, but the fact that so far, more than one familiar is good news. I'll get to use the alc stove that jerbear made for me, unless you think I should bring a back up canister of fuel.
