It won't be in the Red, but I promise it'll be good. Distance will be around 20 miles.” 1:43:57 PM 10/27/06 “I was just reading about this trail the other day. I had no idea it was so damn long. I was wondering how many miles are on roads? Any idea?” 1:47:54 PM 10/27/06 “looking at the delorme atlas, id say not alot. i heard there is a 5 mile roadwalk somewhere, but overall there doesnt seem to be much more than what the AT, that is to say, maybe 10-15 percent” 1:55:01 PM 10/27/06 “And it's all in the Boone so you can camp anywhere along the whole thing too right? Man, that'd be an awesome hike to do end to end if ya had a ride back to the car.” 1:57:23 PM 10/27/06 “its practically all in the boone, except for the very southern end where it heads into bsf and picket state park in tennessee last edited: 10/27/06 2:02:26 PM” 2:01:07 PM 10/27/06 “i think it would be cool to do either the section along the cumberland or along the bsf” 2:05:47 PM 10/27/06 “Quite a bit of it is road hiking, blacktop and gravel.” 5:12:11 PM 10/27/06 “sticky! what do you think is the best part of the sheltowee?” 11:58:03 AM 10/28/06 “the best part in my opinion is the section that takes you to a side trail leading to the Indian Stair Case.........STICKS knows the area well since he goes ther several times a year for the last 15 plus years...” 5:55:01 AM 10/29/06 “im actually looking for a section outside the red, but thanks for the tip, fridge” 11:18:10 AM 10/29/06 “I hike this trail up in Kentucky near Morehead where I have a place. The section in and around Cave Run Lake is very good and not used very much this time of year. I also was looking over the section where it crosses I-75 near Livingston, KY, but that has been over run by people in 4x4 trucks and such lately.” 11:56:54 PM 11/04/06 “im thinking pickett state park to peters mountain” 3:53:22 PM 11/08/06 “bump bump bidda bump bump bump” 6:46:58 PM 11/27/06 “20 miles is a bit too much for my hip right now..... Im free that weekend so I'll jsut have to find a hike somwehere else :P” 6:52:54 PM 11/27/06 “over 3 days” 6:55:01 PM 11/27/06 “oh...well thats diffrent! I cant take 3 days :(” 6:55:33 PM 11/27/06 “hmmm how far is KY from VA....hmmmmm” 10:13:42 AM 12/04/06 “right next door” 10:42:16 AM 12/04/06 “Hey Stu, exactly where would you come from?” 3:40:43 AM 12/05/06 “If I remember correctly, a section north of Laurel River Lake was really nice. I hiked to Van Hook Falls, beautiful place. At one point, the trail followed above a stream that carved a really cool slot canyon.” 7:14:15 AM 12/05/06 “crash, i still have your hang-tag for rrg on my rear-view mirror. do you want me to mail it to you?” 7:30:01 AM 12/05/06 “i'd be comin from the Roanoke VA area. Dunno how long a drive it is......” 9:18:56 AM 12/05/06 “ok where the heck is this trail? is it the Sheltawee trace/Cumberland River Trail or is it the Sheltawee trace/Red River Gorge trail? lol. or is it something else entirely?” 9:43:16 AM 12/05/06 “the southern section below laurel river lake is very nice- cumberland river and falls- yahoo falls- cool cliffs and overhangs. that might be the place to go.” 10:16:28 AM 12/05/06 “I'm going to bail on this one.” 10:17:49 AM 12/05/06 “sweet pea. this is the southernmost section, in and around big south fork” 11:12:59 AM 12/05/06 “Thanks for the invite but I have to work. I don't have a New Years Eve off until 2011. :(” 11:44:27 AM 12/05/06 “seriously?” 11:59:01 AM 12/05/06 “can someone send me directions. lol.” 12:32:26 PM 12/05/06 “pea, pickett state park is just west of bsf, in tennessee just south of the kentucky border. i will give everybody more explicit directions later” 12:37:53 PM 12/05/06 “Crash, thanks for the invite. I have to be home on NYE though. Some friends of mine rent out a bar somewhere in Cincinnati for the night and have a party with a ton of people every year. I don't get that excited about it, because I don't know many of the people who come. A group of my friends went off to college together and came back with 500 friends. It's usually hard to dig around for the poeple I actually know. My wife has a good time though, and I have to go again this year. If there's somewhere I cana bail out on the afternoon of the 31st, let me know. I could definitely do that.” 2:53:36 PM 12/05/06 ““seriously?” Yeah, seriously. I get Christmas Eve off without pay and that is it.” 3:08:15 PM 12/05/06 “Crash, HOw's it going? Thanks for the invite. I don't know what my holiday plans are and I have to work on that Friday. I'll talk to you next weekend.” 8:28:03 PM 12/05/06 “Stu, to get to the trailhead you have to go through Oneida, TN. The southern terminus for Sheltowee is in Pickett State Park.” 4:01:46 AM 12/06/06 hey sticks “COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE” 4:48:06 AM 12/06/06 “Thanks for the invite! I would go as I've been wanting to get some Sheltowee Trace in ,but my family is celebrating Christmas New Year weekend (my mom has to work on Christmas). What guidebook did you pick up? The one from Johnny Molloy? http://www.johnnymolloy.com/Books/DayOvernightSheltoweeTrace.htm” 6:56:38 AM 12/06/06 “coffee...NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” 2:47:38 PM 12/06/06 “molloy,,,, yea” 3:10:44 PM 12/06/06 “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoo noOOOOOOTTTTTT COFFFEEEEEEE CANDY! CANDY CANDY CANDY!!!! theheehehehe it makes work so much more interesting! lol.” 3:44:56 PM 12/06/06 “ok dude i killed the thread with the hyper candy rant. OKKKKk ppple....I need advising, any idea roughly how far this place is from Roanoke VA? Distance = money and is quickly becomming an issue. thanks!” 5:08:10 PM 12/09/06 “ask mapquest. use oneida, tn as ending point last edited: 12/09/06 8:17:16 PM” 8:16:34 PM 12/09/06 “Hey Crash! I wish I could! I've got a date with Shawnee SF New Year's weekend. ;) If I read correctly, the section you're doing is in Big South Fork? I really want to get down there sometime in the near future. I've heard good things about it. :)” 1:48:11 PM 12/11/06 “I really want to get down there sometime in the near future. let me know whens good for you and we can work it out” 1:57:19 PM 12/11/06 “Definitely! I'll be working on preparing for another trip to the Grand Canyon in May. It will be a lot more strenuous then the hike I did there in October. I'll need to get some good conditioning hikes in. :)” 2:05:49 PM 12/11/06 “what was your gc route?” 2:07:19 PM 12/11/06 “In Oct, it was Hermit - Tonto East - Bright Angel. This coming May is will be South Bass - Tonto East - Bouche and out the last 2 miles on Hermit. If you've never read trail descriptions on those trails, check it out. Tonto is pretty much the same as anywhere else in the park, but South Bass and Bouche will be interesting... Our chances of seeing anyone else while down there those 5 days are slim to none. :)” 2:18:50 PM 12/11/06 Might work for me “I have off - have to check - loved Pickett and BSF” 6:51:32 PM 12/11/06 “pickett state park to peters mt trailhead is only 15.6 miles (after that, its a big long roadwalk). is that enough for 3 days/2 nites? if not, we can add some dayhiking in pickett on friday, or add a section of the jmt to make a 19-20 mile hike thoughts?” 11:25:30 PM 12/12/06 “Pickett State Park is on Tn hyway 154, just east of U.S. 127. It is near Jamestown, Tn and next to Big South Fork NRA, on the Ky/Tn border. Friday night, I'll probably camp somewhere in Pickett, then we can hike Sat-Mon.” 8:29:24 AM 12/13/06 I'm in for this one! “Crash- glad you are doing this one. It will mark a new precident for me, as I have been staying home or going to parties on NYE. It looks like it may be a small group, but the fact that so far, more than one familiar is good news. I'll get to use the alc stove that jerbear made for me, unless you think I should bring a back up canister of fuel.” 12:01:35 PM 12/14/06 << back to Sheltowee Trace Section Hike page
