Here it comes...
You all knew this was going to happen...

I am just putting this one down in the Spring so we can toss some dates around and see what sticks. Let's try to get another group as good as last year.

Last year this trip had sort of three levels of hiking you could do: backpacking, kinda tough backpacking, and forget-it-I-bonked-on-the-last-hill deathmarch hiking.

Now you know.

I have NOT forgotten about the McCoy Hollow Trail. That place is amazing and I want to go back. I am for sure doing the deathmarch.

I vote for April 16th. AFter tax season is over.

haha, that is funny as hell 'cause i picked this weekend because it was after tax day. i had no other reason.

the date is totally movable, however, i think wounded knee and i were tossing the idea of a spring trip around.

It was one of the best TT trips I've ever been on. That had alot to do with the people, but the place is lovely too.

I am most likely in, but I have myself down as a maybe. Anytime after the 16th should be fine for me.

It looks as if we are planning the same route, yes? Might I suggest staying at the site at second creek. I scoped this sit out while backtracking through to find the group on the last trip. It is high on a bluff and has decent tree cover. Water is available from the stream at the bottom of the hill, so it is close. This was a good sixed site as well, capable of handling at least 8 tents. There was a nice ring for fires as well.

Just a suggestion, I know nothing is that set in stone yet.

The question is are there any blackwalnut trees in the 2nd creek site? =D

i pulled the details from your list trip, knee, but anything is good. i really want to revisit the mccoy hollow trail tho. magic place and i think i may want to spend more time there rather than race through it.

Good one Sass! The tree coverage was nice at this site, don't know about the walnut trees.

I figured you were good with anything Jim. As I may have mentioned before, this is the last portion of trails I need to hike here. I have been on all other trails in the backcountry.

Mt Everest?

BUMP

people, don't miss this trip. this is a repeat of the mammoth cave from last year... a classic.

wounded knee and i are working together on planning this one. we talked in great detail as we were driving back from our NCT trip this weekend. some ideas:

1. there will be multiple loops (three I think) that will map to levels of difficulty so everyone can "hike their own hike".

2. elevations and other statistics will be clearly posted in advance.

3. we are going to for sure have the McCoy Hollow Trail on the advanced hike (the buttkicker)

4. There will be one buttkicker hike (the most advanced) but the other two will be newbie hiking and intermediate.

5. Right now the dates are there as a placeholder only. We want to try to stay in April but we can move the trip a bit so we get "critical mass". Right now I set the date to be just after the weekend taxes are due. TAKE YOU FRUSTRATIONS AT UNCLE SAM OUT ON THE TRAIL!!

:)

Hope you ALL can make it. This was a classic trip last year and is not one to be missed.

I'm just shocked I wasnt the last in camp for a change LOL!

i am going to cook up at least 3 routes so as long as people hike to their comfort level all should be good. i downloaded some good USGS topo data for the park and will work out elevation profiles for each of them so people know what they are getting into. aside from the buttkicker hike (one of the three) i see no reason why people should have to hike in the dark unless they choose to do so.

I'm considering caching my back about a mile from the campsite (assuming it's the same site as last year).

I'd like to see the whole trail (long route)but want to enjoy the hike instead of it being a near-death experience.....

i am still planning out the routes (meaning i haven't done this yet). last year the long hike was outstanding, esp the McCoy Hollow Trail.

The '05 trip for those that want to read about it: http://www.thebackpacker.com/trips/trip/753.php

I am thinking the Raymer Hollow Trail this time, but I want to see the martin hollow trail again.

the shorter hikes would be looks around the longer one.

another challenge is camp sites. these have to be reserved in person, or they did in '05 i think. not knowing how many people sort of means id on't know how many camp sites. the place we stayed last year had sites fairly close together. if we get too many people we might have a problem, esp if we camped at a different location.

anyway, i have been doing a rather crummy hob planning out the routes and will spend some time this week. i am off from work this week.
