Anyone live around the Florida Panhandle or know of any good hiking near by?

I've just done some very short trips around my local area but was looking for something more challenging, especially if its scenic. I love taking photos.

I suggest some sections of the Florida Trail, especially across Eglin AFB. Also, some of the Florida State Parks and Beaches have some interesing hiking trails.

Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail

St. Joseph Peninsula Trail

Try searching on Google.

I used to hike from Niceville into Valparaiso. Oops, hold that. I used to drive.

Instead of going all the way down to Ft Lauderdale for Christmas, I am thinking of staying up in N FL or the Panhandle.

Perhaps this will be the time to go camp on Perdido Key.

The large furry ant on your livejournal page is called a velvet ant also called a "Cow Killer" It's really a type of wasp though.
Steer clear, their stings are super painful.

HPM - You finally solved a 17 year old mystery for me. I had one of those in a foxhole with me one rainy night and never knew what it was. Thanks!

HPM nailed it. They will knock your ass off if they sting you.

It is the "bridge" between wasps and ants.

chili - Be sure to bring snow snowshoes. Yes, it might snow there, what with all this global warming and such. Actually, I've experienced snow in Niceville and Valparaiso.

The only snow I can remember on the Gulf Coast was described as "looking like grits falling from the sky" by an elderly lady interviewed on TV.

The snow I experienced was in the winter of 1982-1983. It didn't amount to beans, but it was cold. Another storm report: "Snowfalls ranged from 4 to 6 inches in the Florida Panhandle ..." STORM TEAM 4; Snow hit Florida during 1993 storm

You know you are a long time resident of the deep south when you can remember the time that it snowed. The last real cold snap here was in 1989. I remember it well because the ground froze.

To me, South is where there is no winter. For that one needs to go further South than Miami. Panama is ideal with only two seasons, wet and dry. Puerto Rico was warm in the winter, too. However, cold weather can be experienced near the tops of some of the mountains, even near the equator.

I have experienced "jacket weather" in the Miami area(December, 1974).

December of '73 was when it got cool in Miami

we played Little League (Hialeah Athletic Association) in the winter of '73/'74 and you had to wear a coat to play in the field

One of the funniest weather moments that I've had was watching the Weather Channel a few years ago when the west coast of Florida had "lake effect" snow. And that's the official term, even when there is no lake.

It snowed in Houston on Jan. 11, 1973 and Feb. 9, 1973. I was 12. I still remember.

We got a little over an inch of snow each time.
