I never really saw the appeal of the JetBoil. What's so special about it? It comes with a pot covered in neoprene? I guess the fuel savings don't mean much to me since a canister running out hasn't really been a problem for me.

I like my pocket rocket. I haven't really looked that hard at the JetBoil, but it seemed like a glorified canister stove.

hehe. if all you are doing is boiling water for meals it's not a bad solution for week-long trips. a small canister of fuel boils 10-12 liters of water... 42-50 cups or 7-8 cups of boiling water per day over a week. that's pretty darn good for a small canister of butane.

personally i have fallen in love with the fluxring cook pot and my own stove. i am so easily pleased.

I think it equals out. you should bid like $500 on it and then nobody will follow it up, if someone does, whoah, bigtime score for you!!

i don't like the jetboil. I don't like the morning fiddling with it. I want to slam it against a rock every single morning...I think my pepsi stove or my brunton is going to save my insanity.

Pixie..na, I'll be hiking the JMT. Saving like crazy right now so I can afford a little more then just the JMT, like a trip before the JMT. LOL

I have a friend who found me jsut last week. She lives in the tri cities area. I am planning on visiting her next year, maybe sooner. how about we introduce her to real hiking?? LOL

I am not saying another bad word about my lovely jetboil stove. I tell you after I sold it on ebay. LOL

just to make it clear there isn't anything wrong with it, it's all me!!

and no, it's not weather/temperature related. those who hiked with me know that I want to kill my jetboil every single morning/evening... [it's just worse for me in the morning because I am a grump]

Dang, Gem! Had I known I would have bought yours. I got mine for $59 the other day, but yours would have been even cheaper. And it would have gone to a good home. I'd even let you visit it. ;-)

Is 64.95 a good price for the personal Jetboil?
jackstraw

yes, but I should warn you that if the purpose of your purchase is the automatic ignition (as it was for me)- mine went out after about 10 uses.

I know you can replace the part but I bet it will be like my gas grill- just a part that keeps breaking, so I'm not going to bother. Other then the auto-ignition though, I love my jet-boil.

The JetBoil is pretty cool. I use it for Boy Scout campouts and such. It has a lot of innovative features. It does boil water fast, keeps food/drinks hot, and is fuel efficient. It's also heavy and bulky relative to a lot of other options for "weekend warrior" hikers. The automatic ignition is a piece of junk and it is my one real complaint about the device.

The MSR version of the JetBoil is even heavier. Also, there were test results published on BPL that showed that the CO output for the stove was basically off the chart. Now this is sort of meaningless because NO stove manufacturer is going to condone using their stove in a confined place like a tent... still, be aware that if you are planning on using this as a "snow melter/winter camping stove" that you need to provide for good ventilation and don't use it in a tent period. My understanding is that MSR is looking into the results published on BPL and knowing them and how responsive and straightforward they are we will see a good response from them soon.

graska,
My igniter is still doing fine after about two years of use. You may want to check to see if the little metal (bent) rod that the spark comes from is close enough to the edge of the burner for a spark to jump across. Mine gets bent occaisionally and I have to re-bend it back into position.

The Jetboil is good for boiling water and making soupy soups, but it takes constant stiring to actually cook anything in it because all of the heat is concentrated into a spot about the size of a quarter in the middle of the pot. I'm still partial to my old CampGaz for actual cooking (rather than boil and pour), because of the size of the burner.

The usual price is $79.99, isn't it? My kids gave me the one for Christmas with the coffee press, ($89.99), YEAH FOR KIDS!

I love it too. Unfortunately it's not mine and has followed Birch on his travels. Stupid me for buying for him for Father's Day last year. I should've just come home with it one for "Us". Last thing we bought for his deployment was ten canisters for the jetboil. =)

Yeah. If it's only a couple of nights, it's gonna be fresh! If fires are allowed, it's gonna be grilled. If fires aren't allowed, it's gonna be sautayed or fried.

Anything after two days is made with boiling water or rehydrated and cooked in a pan.

That's my cooking style in a nutshell (not that anyone cares).
