No grounds will get in and you can squeeze out every drop of rich and tasty goodness :-)” 5:25:37 PM 1/31/07 “Thanks for the tip dhutch1! The "pods" are being discontinued at my local grocery store... I could buy them up and store them in the freezer! I love my jetboil by the way, but I have found that I need to keep the fuel warm in colder temps. Like May in WI. ; )” 7:51:21 PM 1/31/07 “Yeah, I've used the pods using the "tea bag" method because you can buy them with a darker blend. I want to use them with my new Jetboil coffee press to save mess. I don't mind cleanup in the summer, but in the winter, it somehow seems like much more work, don't know why. Once you run out of frozen pods, I have been told that Starbucks sells a pod but have not checked it out.” 7:57:19 PM 1/31/07 “pods, what an awesome idea, i've got to go and get some NOW” 10:02:53 PM 1/31/07 “make your own. you can buy empty tea bags that fold closed like an origami project. part of the trick to a good cup of coffee is making sure the grounds have room to expand (just like tea) so don't overfill them. if you can learn to live with a few grounds try making cowboy coffee. boil water, put grounds in water, and wait until the grounds settle. you can speed matters up by pouring a little cold water into the top and tapping the sides of the pot. if you use a cozy the coffee will keep hot but you do have to be patient. it does make a darn good cup of coffee but it won't be "silt free" and you may get a chunk or two thrown in... but who among us wouldn't benefit from a little more fiber in our diets? ;)” 8:02:38 AM 2/01/07 “I have thought of doing the tea bag thing so frequently so that I can use my own super dark coffee. Jimmy san - With everything you have going on where DO you find the time? :-)” 8:23:50 AM 2/01/07 8:41:37 AM 2/01/07 “The new Bass Pro Shop is opening this week a couple miles from my house. They are advertising Jetboils for 59.88. I know that's a good price, but is it an unusually good price?” 2:32:48 PM 2/11/07 “usually 79.99” 2:50:12 PM 2/11/07 “I got mine at Gander, it was packaged for Christmas, with the coffee press and they we're getting rid of the last couple left on an encap for... $39.99 with some of Paul Newman's Coffee! I found it last spring... it had been sitting there unpurchased for months!” 3:55:22 PM 2/11/07 “I'd say it's a danged good price at 25% off.” 4:24:26 PM 2/11/07 “darn graska, nice grab!” 5:22:52 PM 2/11/07 “yeah, my son actually found it, I was drooling at the regular priced jetboils and he walks over with that... He gets full kudos!” 7:09:50 PM 2/11/07 “the pot is the best thing going. i combined that jetboil pot with the snow peak gigapower stove and windscreen (made for the stove) and the setup works as well as the jetboil with a lot less weight.” 7:14:38 PM 2/11/07 “Jimmy- you are always up to something!” 7:27:46 PM 2/11/07 “I've tried combining that pot with a few different alcohol stoves, but I'm yet to find the perfect combination yet.” 7:32:24 PM 2/11/07 “it works much better with the alcohol stoves i have used it with than any other pot I own. the flux ring probably plays a part but the neoprene insulation probably also makes a huge difference. aluminum pots are the best conductors of heat but they lose it as well. that neoprene sleeve keeps the heat in the pot. i can turn off my gigapower stove after i have water boiling and it will continue to boil vigorously for just under a minute! amazing...” 7:35:40 PM 2/11/07 “I like the automatic ignition...” 7:36:53 PM 2/11/07 “for sure buy the windscreen that snowpeak sells for that stove, if you have it. it's awesome and fits under the jetboil pot like it was made for this purpose. it's an amazing combo. note that you can buy the jetboil pot on it's own and don't need to own a jetboil to get the pot.” 7:42:13 PM 2/11/07 “jet boils suck, to heavy when compared to other stoves and pot” 7:49:25 PM 2/11/07 “Since I generally backpack with a partner these days (lucky me!), inconsequential weight like that is not a consideration. While it's not as good a deal as Graska's (wow, dude!), I think it's worth the sixty bucks. Thanks for the helpful input.” 9:48:39 PM 2/11/07 “the jetboil is clearly a great and innovative design. ewker is right, it's on the heavy side... but then for some people the weight isn't that big of a deal. i am looking forward to seeing what is in the future for canister stove design. it think the leap the jetboil took is the start of a lot of innovation that we will all benefit from. hey ruby! you know me... now weight is inconsequential! haha ;o)” 11:31:53 PM 2/11/07 “HOw can you say the jetboil is heavy? The whole thing including fuel weighs 15 ounces. And this is the one with coffee press.” 12:20:54 AM 2/12/07 “Pamela, I think you have the weight wrong for the Jetboil. The number you are quoting is for the Jetboil without the fuel (add in 8 oz for a small canister). The stove body weighs 6 oz and the cup/lid weighs 9.25 oz for a total weight of 15.25 oz. The total weight for the system you are quoting (with fuel) is 23.25 oz or 1.45 lbs.” 10:00:43 AM 2/12/07 “The Jetboil is too heavy and overkill.” 10:09:15 AM 2/12/07 “I would have to think about this a bit, StoveStomper. Let's run the numbers. You are an expert with alcohol stoves... The jetboil will boil 12 liters of water with an 8 oz weight fuel canister (4 oz of fuel, 4 oz of can). That's 50 cups of water with a setup that weighs 23 oz. How much alcohol would you have to carry to boil 50 cups of water? A base alcohol stove setup would weigh what, 6 oz (pot + cozy + fuel + windscreen + stove)? If you need more than 17 oz of alcohol + bottle to boil 50 cups of water than you are heavier than the Jetboil. Esbit should boil 2 cups with a .5 oz tablet. So 50 cups of water would require 25 Esbit tabs or 12.5 oz of Esbit. So Esbit might edge out the Jetboil by 5 oz. That's a pretty close margin considering the Jetboil is a canister stove. Amazing, really. last edited: 2/12/07 10:51:17 AM” 10:45:49 AM 2/12/07 “Dude, think. Your carry weight of alcohol goes down each day. You are carrying the full weight of the Jetboil and can every day.” 10:49:14 AM 2/12/07 “The weight of the canister goes down each day as well... it weighs 4 oz empty and 8 oz full. If your pop bottle weighs 1 oz then you are 3 oz different at the end. So how much alcohol to boil 50 cups of water? Add in the 3 oz penalty for the Jetboil... I agree this is fair.” 10:53:03 AM 2/12/07 “If you're out for any length of time then there's not much in it. And I have to say that the Jetboil is damn convenient.” 11:03:56 AM 2/12/07 too funny “/. . .and speaking of extra ounces . .how many POUNDS overweight are we?? Saving a few ounces of fuel . . .versus loosing a few pounds of fat.” 1:04:50 PM 2/12/07 “Lee, that was my thought exactly. I'm currently in a downward trend of body weight. So what if I carry a half pound or pound more than I would normally if I weigh a pack's weight less than before? Besides, who am I kidding? I'll have Jon carry the Jetboil. Then it weighs 0 ounces for me. ;-)” 1:12:54 PM 2/12/07 “Ruby is such a girly girl. ;-)” 1:13:50 PM 2/12/07 “fat hikers don't have to carry as much food... it's built in. so it all evens out.” 1:20:24 PM 2/12/07 “This thread should be fuego!” 1:41:30 PM 2/12/07 “Just carry a cast iron skillet and a lot of matches. ;-)” 1:57:48 PM 2/12/07 “Better yet, hide the cast iron in Zac's pack.” 2:00:29 PM 2/12/07 “better yet, a Dutch Oven.” 2:01:51 PM 2/12/07 “lmao! i have a dutch oven i made from three "bakes square" pie plates that is ultralight. it works well ... makes a great cobbler as long as there is not a lot of wind.” 2:05:33 PM 2/12/07 “The jetboil is old news - the MSR Reactor is the new schnitz. http://www.msrcorp.com/home.asp There is a side-by-side comparison in the January Rock & Ice.” 2:21:25 PM 2/12/07 “the Reactor... now THAT is heavy. MSR's marketing engine is in full tilt with that sucker. they contridict their own marketing data. if you look at the specs for the pocket rockat and the reactor you will see that the pocket rocket is a lighter option. scary.” 2:36:32 PM 2/12/07 “..and look how much VOLUME that sucker will take up in your pack.” 2:37:30 PM 2/12/07 “yeah but if you have to cook 50 chickens.... ![]() and the cool thing is you have to employ 10 Porters to drag the stuff up there....thus spreading the wealth and employing 10 people...ITS A WIN WIN FOR EVERYONE>” 2:50:16 PM 2/12/07 “i said goddamn! that thin has tubeless tires...lol!” 2:54:44 PM 2/12/07 “i'm not sure about that weight, i actually put mine on a scale with a full fuel canister in it.” 7:44:13 PM 2/12/07 “I M sorry if i was snotty...” 11:14:01 PM 2/12/07 “I'm sorry if I sounded snotty too. I don't think either of us meant to come off that way. Friends, right? :O)” 1:19:35 PM 2/13/07 “This is TT. snotty is expected. ;-)” 1:20:39 PM 2/13/07 “hey! stop being so nice! You guys are scaring me!!!” 1:40:10 PM 2/13/07 “Yea, piss off both of you!” 1:53:18 PM 2/13/07 “holy crap! well you three know what you can do, right? ;O)” 1:55:13 PM 2/13/07
