HPD: While I'm be much more critical of those founders who had an unambiguous pro-slavery agenda and yet spoke of all men being created equal and having inalienable rights, I think Jefferson is due some serious criticism. The text you link to reads as if none of the founders were pro-slave - as if the founders were all anti-slavery and were compromising with some folks who didn't have a vote and weren't present when these things were decided. For one thing, he never freed his slaves. Washington, at least, had them freed upon his death.

Jefferson also waffled on the idea of freeing slaves - arguing at times that it was impractical while also arguing it was immoral to keep them. Does this mean I would bash him? No, there is a lot to recommend him and much to admire. Still, I find it inconsistent with the "founder worship" I see in some places.

America Moving from Kingdom of Cash to Socialism Slowly but Surely
Pravda.Ru

Obamas decision not to build the Missile Defense System in Poland and the Czech Republic and his Noble Prize have not yet been comprehended from a philosophical viewpoint. Its time to do it.

Power of Money against Power of Spirit

The last turning point similar to the current one happened approximately 400 years ago. The Western European society discovered a new hierarchy of values. Feudalism that valued service and chivalry was replaced with capitalism. Wealth became the measure of success, and everyone was to care about his own pocket only. The cult of money replaced all other values, including religious.

Capitalism turned everything upside down and made people more excited about stuffing their bank accounts than anything else. This system turned out to be extremely efficient in terms of production of goods, services, and comfort. America benefited from the system the most, and decided that the rest of the world has to adopt it as well. If some underdeveloped countries are unable to appreciate the benefits of capitalism, they should be forced to do it.

Collapse of the Illusion

Meanwhile, philosophers says that capitalism is driven not by hard cash, but rather, striving for hard cash. Its driven not by the production of goods, but rather, striving for consumption of these goods.

If everyone had these values, the dog-eat-dog principal would be the major principal in the world history. But America failed to do it. There are plenty of underdeveloped people in the world who continue to cherish spiritual values. There are not that many chances left to force them into worshiping money since these underdeveloped people adopt western technology and become stronger. The appeal to adopt American values doesnt work either. Why would we adopt the system if the system is in crisis? Pragmatic America realized that billions of people are not willing to live in the kingdom of hard cash and decided that it would be better off leaving this kingdom itself. Now the USA is talking about introducing elements of socialism.

What does Obamas decision not to build the Eastern European Missile Defense System have to do with all of this? Well, it means that its not capitalism thats undergoing the crisis, but the belief in its high efficiency. And this, in turn, means that America, the bulwark of capitalism, is no longer the boss of the world. And if its not the boss any more, it has to be friends with everybody, including Russia. And its Americas turn to offer Russia to push the reset button. Or maybe its just tired of imposing its rules on others and felt that friendship is more valuable than money and power? If this is the case, we will soon witness another turning point in the world history.

I`m too tired to go a`fuego1ing today (I was up too late worrying about Tiger`s health)... if you really beleive that, fine. I think it`s a bit extreme, though I`d be a liar if I said I haven`t seen some actions by our government (and not just this administration either!) that could certainly be interpreted as "socialist." I think where you and I differ is that I don`t necessarily think that anything that might be interpreted as socialist is automatically and necessarily a bad thing (though we both can probably agree that full-fledged socialism is indeed not a ver good way to go). I just don`t see us getting anywhere near true socialism with the things going on now, and I consider the pundits` claims otherwise to be fearmongering - inciting a panic.

keep in mind, the republicans stand to lose power at a rate directly related to the amount of success Obama has. Maybe their party-line objections to anything he says or does aren`t always because of the red menace?

okay, then the rest of the people on the right, whatever you want to name them (do they have a name?). I understand that a lot of people think that liberals are inherently evil (I think el d00d has said that exact phrase repeatedly), but all that aside, the right, in any manifestation, stands to be good and screwed by any success Obama may have. Watching politics has taught me that the motive any politician or pundit states for doing/saying something is almost never their real motive - so I can`t help but see this loss of power being a big motive for the people who`ve made careers (and fortunes) bashing Obama

A lot of people, pundits in particular, are completely unable to admit when the liberal-run government does something good. They object to any decision immediately simply because the liberals made it. Then they try to find or manufacture information to back up these objections. I can understand this, as I was caught up in the same thing while Bush was in charge (even going so far as to call the conservatives evil). And I`ll admit that a lot of liberal news networks and personalities are just as guilty of raping the truth as I accuse Beck and Limbaugh of being, so this isn`t an indictment of the conservative media as much as one of the media en masse, nor am I saying that the conservatives right now who are calling for Obama`s head with claims of "nazi" are any different than those who not long ago did the same with Bush.

Now, it`s a lot easier to see things objectively when the people you wanted are running the country, I admit, but don`t you think that some of the right`s objections with any liberal proposal, speech, or success have to do not with the liberals being evil or the decision being bad, or communist invasion - but because they stand to not see much power for a long time if Obama turns the country`s woeful financial situation around, catches bin laden, and craps a rainbow of skittles? Because if Obama does a good job, it may be a very long time till conservatives get another chance to run the show...

pepsi - the difference between you and me, and I think we've touched on this before, is you are looking at it like 2 sides fighting. I don't care about the sides. I only care about my own beliefs. I don't care about either one's motivations, good or bad. I want the country to be made right. Period.

no, you`re wrong there - I want the same thing. But I think that right now, it is entirely about two sides fighting - and the people right now most loudly insisting on reform are hiding in the ranks on the right side of the battle, not sitting above it like you think

The 2 "sides" are the same. They both have their own self-interests at heart, not the countries. Their fighting is not my concern. My concern is the country. To me, they are both wrong.

Strat. Sorry it took so long to answer your question. Hope all is well with you and the ten acres.
I was trying to make a funny, but it probably is true that low-IQ people make up a portion of those people who are trying to influence policy in the USA.
My point is, political philosophy is one thing. Persons who argue one philosophy over another may or may not be a danger to our country. As with all things, we need to know the difference between those who are inclined towards violence and will act upon that inclination and those who want to debate the direction that federal policy should take.
It_s too easy to paint with a broad brush and use scare tactics. That would be refusal to use intelligence, IMHO.

Today, Joseph McCarthy’s ideological heirs in the Republican Party and right-wing media are using the language and tactics of McCarthy to stir fears that the nation is being destroyed by enemies from within. Republican Members of Congress and other GOP officials have not shown Welch’s concern for decency; instead they frequently act as an “amen chorus” to the far right’s demagogues or stay silent, hoping to reap political gain from the attacks on President Obama, administration officials and nominees, congressional democrats, and even military leaders.

http://www.sfweekly.com/2009-12-09/news/charitable-front/

As with any San Francisco dogfight, myriad organizations have piled on to the civic battle to pressure Sutter Health to rebuild St. Luke's Hospital at Csar Chvez and Valencia streets...........................

Knowledgeable sources say that the Physicians Organizing Committee is one of several Bay Area front groups set up to disguise a strange political cult. Although a representative for the committee has denied the link, it has shared personnel with an alleged cult front group, and received a grant from the National Equal Justice Association (NEJA), a nonprofit shell corporation linked to the cult. (The committee's manager, meanwhile, has donated money to NEJA.) Committee representatives also deal with the press using a protocol consistent with rules laid down by the cult.

The cult, an umbrella organization based in New York, goes by names such as the Provisional Communist Party and the National Labor Federation, abbreviated as NatlFed. Historically, the stated goal of NatlFed is one that would likely even discomfit the Bay Area liberals the organization targets for recruiting: the violent overthrow of the U.S. government.

North Dakota of all Places!
As Washington tries to regulate Wall Street's newfangled derivatives, government officials in at least a dozen states are mulling a more old-school response to the financial crisis: 100 percent state-run banks. Since 1919, North Dakota has operated the nation's only depository of this kind, a genuinely socialist enterprise that spins tax revenues into loans for in-state farmers, students, and small-business owners. Unlike other banks, the Bank of North Dakota (BND) plows about half its profits into the state budget and takes cues from the governor, who acts as chairman, and a seven-member advisory board that the governor appoints.

In normal times, such a bank might not be politically palatable. Now, however, it's emerging as an attractive model for lawmakersin large part because North -Dakota flourished during the recession, with the nation's lowest unemployment rate (about 4 percent) and one of the largest budget surpluses (more than$1 billion). Some of the state's well-being is attributable to its agriculture- and energy-based economy. But the BND has helped greatly, propping up more than 100 privately held community banks and keeping credit flowing to small, local businesses even as it remains tighter nationally. The bank could be attractive for more populist reasons, too: it helps keep taxes lowBND has offset $350 million in public projects since 1997and Main Street's money out of Wall Street's coffers.
