it was officially opened a couple of months ago, but is still under construction. i imagine much of it is still road-walking, like the original AT in its early years

no

but the iat, the at, the bmt (hold the lettuce), the pinhoti trail, and the florida trail comprise the east coast trail

the bmt trail - bearmagnet trail. Bar hopping at its finest.

From Adams Morgan, to Columbia Heights, over to Logan Circle, Ledroit Park and Shaw, down to The Hill and beyond.

Bear, why won't Canada let you in?

You seemed like a nice person at Masten (we all saw each other at our worst, after all).

I doubt it considering Baxter State Park closed the trails that were to be part of the IAT

I can’t remember the trail name, but I believe it is the one that comes off of Katahdin from Howe Peaks. I remember hearing that the trail below treeline was choked with blowdown and the park had no intention of re-clearing the trail.

looking at my map of baxter, that looks like the north peaks trail. one could still take the northwest basin trail or the russell pond trail out. they all go in the same direction

My Confession. The Short Version
Just for you, Gremlin.

A. The Montana/Alberta Keystone Cops flipped because I didn't have a passport (both sides, mind you). Couldn't understand why I would try and "visit another country without a passport". Therefore we were directed "inside"

2. I have a Misdemeanor from 1985 for stealing street signs. I was told my record was sealed so when they asked if I had any convictions I said "no".

My record was never sealed.

Apparently that was enough for them. If I ever want to visit Canada I have to go through some red tape with an Embassy or two and shell out a few 100 to make it "go away".

To get back into the Good Old USA I had to sit inside the US Facility and tell them exactly where I was born and what Hospital I was born at.

I was blue in the face telling them (Canadians & Americans) I lived near the border (Niagara Falls) for some 30+years and crossed all the time, rarely even showing my ID.

Post 9/11 paranoia, eh?

That was in 2005. It kind of left a bad taste in my Mouth. And I'm not sure I care to crross again. At least for a while.

That's a bummer, XL. If they do a search they can even refuse you entry if you've been arrested and never even convicted of anything.

Do you want me to look into the waiver process? You can usually do these things on your own on the 'net and pay only minimal admin. fees.

grem - you think it can be done over the internet? i was led to believe I would have to do it in person. Of course that was out in bum#&%!$ Alberta.

Watch out for Vikings near L'Anse aux Meadows. Leifr Eiriksson camped there in the year 1000.
My life will not be complete until I visit this place. Last time I attempted this, the ferry was from Nova Scotia was out. Good to know I can now hike all the way.

I know a few Customs and Immigration people (including my ex-wife). It might take a couple of weeks, but I'll get you the goods. Just about everything to do with governments in Canada is now on-line.

Hey BM...
I almost always have trouble crossing into Canada. They always search my truck. I've narrowed the reason down to one. They ask if I have any weapons... Guns, Knives, Mace. I tell them I have a cleaver, but use it only to cut sausage and cheese.

One time, they asked if I have any weapons... Guns or Mace. I said no, and was allowed to proceed without the usual ritual.

BM I had heard that Castro had taken the usual 15 process of becoming a MASTER roller and made it a 3 year training program. As a result many Cuban cigars are losing to Nicaragua, DR and Honduras....

Goat, LOL, everytime I get that "weapons or threat to the nation" line I think of the movie "Viva Max" about a Mexican General who wanted to show his Girlfriend how brave he was. They went to the Alamo and took it. They show up at the border 100 soldiers without ammunition (looking like a parade group) the Border Guy says,"Do you have any intentions to overthrow the government of the United States?'

Max looks at him and says,"You mean the 100 of us?"

Any help would be much appreciated, Gremlin. Thanks!

Goat - it was the only time I ever had trouble crossing the border. Well besides that time period when Reagan pushed the zero tolerance crap through. man where those Canadian border gaurds pissy then!

I have a friend that brings cubans back from the UK. Smoked one on my wedding night while drinking Macallan 18.

'Twas heaven.

crash is right....LOL the story I get is that the night before Jack The Zipper (Kennedy) signed the bill he sent the Secret Service out to buy every Cuban Cigar in NY, Chicago etc so he would have a good supply.

If you read the treasury law...purchasing for consumption (even in a foriegn country) is considered illegal. I am hoping that when Fidel officially goes paws up, assumes room temperature etc we will see his daughter (Anna I think) get control over Raul. Anna is supposed to be more western in her thinking.
Personally I think it would be cool to have Cuba become a resort. Imagine it free, Miami and Florida would lose some population but hey we would get a neat tropical paradise.

Plus the government could keep some sites open so we could show the libbies the great advances of World Socialisim (LOL)
