seems like lots of peeps want to hike in friday for ductapes hoosier hiking trip, but many have never been to peeper.

ive been to peeper several times, a couple of times in the dark, and would be willing to meet with ppl who would like to go in with someone. it might be a little tricky to find in the dark if youve never been there before.

anyways, lets discuss a meeting time and place

Friday Night
Crash: You are correct, there are sure to be many people coming in at all hours on Friday. I've just assumed we'll pick a parking spot & give some directions from there to camp peeper. It's great that you will be available to hike some folks in, but we'll definitly need some written directions for those who don't match up with you. Plus it looks like we'll need to go in early & clear some trees to make room for everyone.. can you say "winterfest"?

What if we meet at the firetower? To me, that is the easiest. Do you mean meet someplace other that this area, like the Mickey D's in Bloomington and convoy it in to the parking area?

I know where Peeper is as well and should be in around 8. All depends on how much I drink at my company X-mas party that afternoon.

written directions
park at the fire tower. i believe this is also known as the terril ridge trailhead. follow terril ridge trail about a mile and a half. its a big wide forest road. the road goes back to the cemetary. however, there is a charred spot on the ground the size and shape of a fire ring, to the right, about 500 feet before the cemetary. this marks the side trail to camp peeper, which is on your left after a couple minutes hike in

Anyone have easy directions to the trailhead? I'm coming in West 70 from the Dayton area. Thanks :-)

i plan to be there early. i can put a glowstick out at the turnoff so no one misses it. i will also get a fire going before dark so it should be easy to find.

Ductape says: "i plan to be there early. i can put a glowstick out at the turnoff so no one misses it."

You will be on a fairly wide road up to that turn. There are no "decision" to make other than staying on the road. If there is a glowstick at the turn it is a VERY easy route.

Take 70 WEST to Indy until you hit 65. Take 65 SOUTH to 46, then head WEST until you hit 446. Here you will want to head SOUTH. After you cross Lake Monroe, keep you eyes open for the Charles Deam Wilderness sign. You should see it after about 2 miles. Here, you want to turn LEFT onto the gravel road. Follow the road past 3 seperate parking lots. The first will be the biggest on the left. The second is on both sides of the road (I think) and the last lot where we will be will be at the fire tower. Call my cell phone (number posted above) when you hit Indy and we can see where we are.

Holy Shi!.
I think it is time I start backpacking again.I have been just so burned out....I don't expect anyone to understand this but I have been sooooo burned out from the trail. To put this into view I am 34 years old and I started backpacking when I was 19 years old and I did between 30 & 60 bagnights a year on so many diffrent trails here in the Mid-West.I have done thru-hikes on the SHT the KT all of the NCT in Pa and all of the NCT in Mi and lots of the Ice Age Trail. In 2004 I started to get so borded with all the shi! trails here in the Mid-West that I thought it would be a good idea to take a long brake and after a long sitout I think it is time to slowly get back into things so I am looking forward to seeing the Deam again God only knows I have seen almost every inch of the Deam and I can also say I have been to places in the Deam that are secret that only a few people know about.

So if I am going to be back into the drivers seat again I need to be drunk and I need to have some good cigars for the trip so I look forward to being one again with my old love Charles Deam Wliderness.

See ya soon.

dorky pink butt, if you come in via 70, make sure you take 465 south around to 65. i still like the cincinnati to greensburg route better, but wk's way shouldnt be much longer

Indy to Deam
As for going thru Indy to the Deam, the most direct route is I-70, to 465 So., to 37 So. to Martinsville/Bloomington. Then to 46/446 & your there.... You never need to get on I-65.

not only can you drive faster on 65 than on 37, but theres less backtracking and you dont have to go thru bloomington if you take 65

its .7 from the axsom/terril ridge junction to the firetower, i believe. we dont all have to go back to the tower if theres someone(s) who doesnt want to add an extra mile and a half to their hike, and those who go on to the tower can leave their packs at the junction

I can't say for sure yet if I'm hiking on Saturday, so y'all can meet wherever you want. It's been a long time since I've been able to drink more than 1 or 2 beers, so I might just want to drive home on Saturday morning.

I think the parking lot sounds like a good plan though. that, or at the junction where the trail to the cave splits off of the road trail back from Camp Peeper.
