Hi all,

I want to start tutoring kids in my town. I'm a certified teacher in my state, but unfortunatly don't have a full-time job. I just ended a 12-week long-term sub job, and and doing some subbing here and there, but I want to make MORE money!

What do tutors cost per hour? I have an idea of what to charge, but want some more input. I'd be willing to tutor middle school and high school kids. G says he made $20 an hour tutoring while he was a high school student, so I'm not sure what the going rate now is!

Anyone? Anyone?

Depends on WHAT your are 'tutoring" in. I would think $20.00 would be a start. Check with Sylvan (call and ask prices) to see what the comparable prices are in your area. While $20.00 may be good in one area it may be WAY out of line in another.

I"m certified to teach math and science, but I'm willing to help kids with other subjects (in middle school). I don't think I'd be much help with high school history. :)

The nearest Sylvan is 25 minutes away, and I am going to call them. They did have a job posting on their website.

I don't know, but I hear some people pay as much as $200 an hour for "tutoring".

Not off hand, I just go for the "free" lessons, although, now that I think about it, even "free" isn't "free".

I'd like to remind you that a happy ending is legal in DC. Defined as "messaging".

SG --

It's all going to depend on what the market will dictate. What you might have gotten in Novi, might not be as much as you can get in your new area. Times are tough, so you might have to set out a low price just to get started.

Remember, it would be a cash thing, so less per hour might not be such a bad thing. I should also suggest that districts do refer students to certified teacher tutors; this might be a good way to work yourself into a district. If they have no formal policy, talk to the department heads and see if there is any leads you can dig up there (maybe the place you just student taught at?).

I'll ask the wife when she gets home what she thinks the going rate is.

LOL Chili...we have all been there. I thought when I got married it was a cost effective method to get tutoring. After adding the price up......

Chili you know tutor prices also depend on how you get your clientele....if you are working the street(so to speak) that is one thing. If you can build a clientele of reference that is safer. This way you can make sure you only get interested "tutorees" finally, bit of advice. Never mention the PRICE and the PRODUCT in the same conversation.

You will also need to ask if you are a "discipline oriented" or offer "creative tutoring".

Q, remember, I'm in Frankenmuth, so people here have decent incomes and are willing to do whatever it takes to help their kids. Its one of the best places to live in mid-MI. I'm definitly going to go talk to the middle school principal (I've already talked to him on a few occassions about jobs, and we had to call him last Wednesday to unlock the school door so we could get in for dance lessons!) and I'm doing a lot of subbing at the high school. I've got plenty of connections in this town, thanks to G. I've met some teachers from a nearby town, and I'll talk to them on Wednesday night at dance class. I've got one other district that I'd like to talk to as well, and just happened to have the husband of the asst. princ. as a guest speaker in my classroom a few weeks ago. The cards are falling into the right places, it seems.

There are very few schools around here that are set up like in Metro Detroit. Most of the time there is one teacher teaching a subject - G is the only one teaching biology in his high school, I was the only 7th grade math teacher during my long-term sub. Many schools have a "curriculum director" who also happens to be a teacher or the principal, but so far I haven't come across a "department" head. Doubtful there is any kind of formal policy about referring tutors. Its truly a "who do you know" kind of town around here. Luckily, G has made a really good name for himself, and I get to ride his coat tails. :)

How the heck are you, anyway? We've been without internet since we got married, so I feel very out of touch with you guys! Things are good here, though I'm out of a job right now! I do have sub jobs lined up for the rest of the week, so that's a good thing! How's school going for you?

Quick Chili, bear, how many double-entendres can you make out of that last statement?

I would have used innuendo...but that would be considered "Leading the Witness" (LOL)

Tarabull says........

"I was tutoring before I rec'vd my certificate and was charging $25. Teachers in my area said that once I was certified, I could rightfully charge $35-$40. Remember, it's still below what Sylvan and other learning centers charge so most people will still consider it a deal. Peace out, yo"
