FYAO Almanac WeatherView MessagesThe link below 12:05:53 PM 11/27/06 “"The snowiest periods will be in mid-November" I hope that thing is wrong. November broke a record for the least amount of snow ever. Mount Mansfield in Vermont only recorded 1/2" for the entire month.” 7:11:04 AM 12/08/06 “The world temps continue to rise - no matter the cause. Every few years a hiker / climber needs to go more north and higher up.” 10:54:36 PM 12/08/06 “http://www.nohrsc.nws.gov/nsa/index.html?region=Northeast&year=2006&month=12&day=9&units=e Lots of snow in the western ADK's” 8:07:42 AM 12/09/06 “The big dark spot west of the Dacks is Tughill.” 9:20:23 AM 12/10/06 “Wow, what a disappointing year so far for snow!” 7:53:24 AM 12/19/06 “It was 60* here yesterday and I was in shorts! I have made plans to build a sled with wheels, and easily removed to convert to snow conditions. I am really building one. I have named it Southern Comfort.” 1:15:34 PM 12/24/06 “Make sure you make those wheels removable. They're talking about 8-12 inches of the white stuff in the Adirondacks tonight and tomorrow.” 11:04:04 AM 12/25/06 “Today's Weather Forecast for Super Secret Location. Today: Periods of snow. How's it looking LZ?” 9:04:41 AM 12/27/06 “I took this from another website: "THERE IS SNOW now in the Lake Placid / High Peaks region. There was very little (dusting) when we got here the 25th, but after yesturday's storm (if you want to call it that). Once you get higher up, you will find anywhere from 1 - 2 feet of fluffy snow. The ground is NOT frozen. Mirror and Placid Lakes are not yet frozen either, though Mirror is getting that way." I had about 1" of wet snow/slush at home (about 600') yesterday morning, but it is all gone at this point. I heard reports from areas in the Southern Adirondacks (Wells Speculator area) of about 2" of wet snow, but that was yesterday morning, I don't know what fell last night.” 9:11:40 AM 12/27/06 ““I'm seeing about 4-10 inches across the Adirondacks as of today. Still wouldn't call it excellent, but so far it's beating the daylights out of last year... Maybe we should start focusing on the western Adirondacks for future FYAO trips? They seem to get more of the lake-effect snow there...” 9:02:51 AM 1/26/07 “Does anyone go to www.squidoo.com/AdirodackHiking/? They have good weather reports and a lot of other good stuff.” 9:30:06 AM 1/26/07 “I looked at this one http://www.nohrsc.noaa.gov/nsa/index.html?year=2007&month=1&day=26&units=e®ion=Northeast[url] Looks like the blue for 25 - 50 inches” 12:00:41 PM 1/26/07 “Phantom, Unfortunately thats a big snowmobiling region so there less of chance for shelters being free. Also something about the buzzing of the motors and smell of the exhaust.” 12:15:16 PM 1/26/07 “Ha Ha! Someone didn't close their center tag.” 12:17:00 PM 1/26/07 a foot of snow NOT excellent??? “Hey snow-happy Phantomsoul, we would be more than happy to let you break trail, iffin it is more snow you desire... ![]() Flashback to the Santononi Camp FYAO...it was a killer slog on the way in. Sheesh, between you and Lt, ya'll are becoming some high maintenance beyatches.” 1:20:33 PM 1/26/07 “I went xc skiing at Cascade near Lake Placid on Friday, and it was just like a good ole fashioned FYAO. It was 5 below zero when I got there and a balmy 3 below when I left. The wind chill was through the roof but thankfully the trails are in the woods. Lots of snow and the skiing was great. I had a blast and I'm hoping to ski into camp with the sled. The Dacks hikers were wimps that day. There wasn't one car in any of the rt73 parking areas Friday morning. The Pitchoff Wall parking area was full though. Those climbers were warriors. last edited: 1/28/07 6:01:09 PM” 5:59:53 PM 1/28/07 “Looks like the Daks got some snow the past couple of days! WoooHooo!! Ongaa Bonga Cold Cold Cold!!!!! And there is a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Indian Lake 4-6 inches by this evening!!! THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBANY HAS ISSUED A WIND CHILL ADVISORY FOR THE WESTERN ADIRONDACKS...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 1 PM EST MONDAY. A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM EST MONDAY. A LARGE BAND OF HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW WILL PRODUCE 1 TO 2 FEET OF SNOW ACCUMULATION ACROSS NORTHERN HERKIMER COUNTY...AND 10 TO 20 INCHES ACROSS PORTIONS OF HAMILTON COUNTY THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING. WITHIN THIS VERY INTENSE BAND OF SNOW...SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR WILL BE COMMON. IN ADDITION...WEST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 35 MPH WILL CAUSE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW...RESULTING IN POOR VISIBILITY AND WHITE OUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES. A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF LAKE- EFFECT SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. LAKE-EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS TYPICALLY ALIGN THEMSELVES IN BANDS AND WILL LIKELY BE INTENSE ENOUGH TO DROP 1 TO SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW PER HOUR FOR SEVERAL HOURS. VISIBILITIES VARY GREATLY AND CAN DROP TO ZERO WITHIN MINUTES. TRAVEL IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. COMMERCE COULD BE SEVERELY IMPACTED. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES COMBINED WITH GUTSY WEST WINDS...WILL RESULT IN WIND CHILL VALUES OF 20 TO 25 BELOW ZERO FROM LATE THIS EVENING INTO EARLY MONDAY AFTERNOON. A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN. IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS... MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND GLOVES.” 9:58:50 AM 2/04/07 << back to FYAO VII page
