I had about 1" of wet snow/slush at home (about 600') yesterday morning, but it is all gone at this point. I heard reports from areas in the Southern Adirondacks (Wells Speculator area) of about 2" of wet snow, but that was yesterday morning, I don't know what fell last night.”

...oh, you mean snow. I've only got about 3" of snow at home (it has snowed every day for about a week, but nothing seems to be piling up). Snow maps for the FYAO location are showing between 12 and 15.”

Where did you see that? The map I looked at this morning says 8" to 12"

“Looks like about a foot of snow for now. Still wouldn't call it excellent, but so far it's beating the daylights out of last year...

Maybe we should start focusing on the western Adirondacks for future FYAO trips? They seem to get more of the lake-effect snow there...”

“I went xc skiing at Cascade near Lake Placid on Friday, and it was just like a good ole fashioned FYAO. It was 5 below zero when I got there and a balmy 3 below when I left. The wind chill was through the roof but thankfully the trails are in the woods. Lots of snow and the skiing was great. I had a blast and I'm hoping to ski into camp with the sled.

The Dacks hikers were wimps that day. There wasn't one car in any of the rt73 parking areas Friday morning. The Pitchoff Wall parking area was full though. Those climbers were warriors.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBANY HAS ISSUED A WIND CHILL ADVISORY FOR THE WESTERN ADIRONDACKS...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 1 PM EST MONDAY. A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM EST MONDAY.

A LARGE BAND OF HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW WILL PRODUCE 1 TO 2 FEET OF SNOW ACCUMULATION ACROSS NORTHERN HERKIMER COUNTY...AND 10 TO 20 INCHES ACROSS PORTIONS OF HAMILTON COUNTY THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING. WITHIN THIS VERY INTENSE BAND OF SNOW...SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR WILL BE COMMON.

IN ADDITION...WEST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 35 MPH WILL CAUSE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW...RESULTING IN POOR VISIBILITY AND WHITE OUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES.

A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF LAKE- EFFECT SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. LAKE-EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS TYPICALLY ALIGN THEMSELVES IN BANDS AND WILL LIKELY BE INTENSE ENOUGH TO DROP 1 TO SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW PER HOUR FOR SEVERAL HOURS. VISIBILITIES VARY GREATLY AND CAN DROP TO ZERO WITHIN MINUTES. TRAVEL IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. COMMERCE COULD BE SEVERELY IMPACTED. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
