Peace sign creates stir

Pagosa homeowners asked to remove symbol or risk fine

A Pagosa Springs resident is resisting an order by her homeowners' association to remove a peace symbol-shaped wreath from an exterior wall of her home.

"I just wanted to put a message of peace out there," said Lisa Jensen, who hung the wreath Nov. 19. She said Wednesday she didn't intend the wreath as a statement against the Iraq war.

"I was really trying to be in favor of something - peace," Jensen said.

She was informed by letter from the Loma Linda Homeowners' Association that "Loma Linda residents are offended by the Peace Sign displayed on the front of your house."

The letter, citing a use-restriction banning "signs, billboards or advertising structures of any kind" within the subdivision without prior approval, said the wreath had to come down by Friday, or Jensen and husband, Bill Trimarco, would face a $25-per-day fine.

Jensen said Saturday that Friday's deadline had come and gone without contact from the board of directors. She was unsure of how, if imposed, collection of any fine would be enforced, but planned to leave all of her Christmas decorations, including the wreath, up until after Christmas.

Jensen said she put up the wreath to honor the Biblical call for peace and goodwill toward men.

You know me, Mr. Freedom. But who's freedom here? A person should have the freedom to decorate their own home as they want. But then again if someone buys a home in a place that has an association they must be aware of the rules and the concept itself that they may not be able to do everything they want.

Bottom line, don't live in places where other ass holes may have a say in how you have your home.

LOL...I wonder how they feel about the Government telling a business owner if they can allow smoking in their private business or not....

Remember when I made the comment a while back that it starts small and one day NO ONE is left to help you....?

I live in a community of 3000 lots (80% built) with a $130 a month fee. Never is any rest had here with the bickering between the golfers (free unlimited golf)and the non-golfers (want small user fees for golf). Now we are fighting to form our own little government for utilities etc. I just stay away and let the others fight the commie golfers that want a free ride forever.

A new lighted wreath in the shape of a peace sign now graces the tower of the old Pagosa Springs town hall, and a band of townspeople marched Tuesday carrying peace signs and stamping a large peace sign in the snow of a town park.

Peace-sign wreaths are also popping up on homes as Pagosa Springs becomes part of a wide-ranging holiday wreath movement that has been sparked by controversy over one displayed on a home in a subdivision five miles south of town.

Lisa Jensen and Bill Trimarco last week were ordered by their subdivision association to remove their wreath or face fines because the display violated covenants banning signs and advertisements.

Association board members responsible for that decision rescinded their order and apologized Monday night. They resigned Tuesday as world opinion about peace signs swamped this town of 1,700 in vitriol and support.

Pagosa Springs has tried to distance itself from the brouhaha by displaying the town's support for peace. Jensen said e-mails and phone calls have poured in from supporters around the world saying they plan to put up peace-sign wreaths too.

In Wisconsin, the Winnebago Peace and Justice Center said it sold a record 20 peace wreaths Tuesday.

"The good thing is I think people have heard our message of peace," Jensen said. "It's been phenomenal."

The Winnebago Peace & Justice Center is again selling Peace Wreaths this holiday season as part of its general fundraising activities. As one of only 2 places in the country that sell this type of wreath, the WPJC is excited to be offering an even better wreath than last year. This years peace sign shaped wreaths are locally made with 100% Fraser fir and measure 30-32” in diameter. At a cost of only $38, Peace Wreaths are available for purchase online (with full shipping capabilities) at www.wpjc.snizville.com, by calling Drew Mueske at 920.292.0386, or by stopping in during open hours. Once wreath orders are placed, production of wreaths takes up to 2 weeks. The WPJC will be accepting orders through Monday December 4th and will have some extra wreaths on hand that are available for purchase.
