“Mike and I are going to fly out to CA in early october and do the TRT. :) We will know exact dates later, as it is too soon yet. We will let you know when we decided what dates we will be out there.” 5:16:22 PM 12/07/06 “Some friends of mine did the whole loop in 5 days - not too bad after you get through that first 45-mile day....” 5:32:33 PM 12/07/06 “Are you planning on a group thang? I just talked to a buddy of mine out there and were talking about hooking up for a BP trip. Another froine of ours did it a few years ago and he has alot of info on it, may even want to do it again.” 7:52:53 PM 12/07/06 “www.tahoerimtrail.org is a very comprehensive site regarding the TRT. Tom Harrison makes the best map I have seen for the Tahoe area. Tim Hauserman wrote my favorite TRT guidebook, it is published by the Wilderness Press. last edited: 12/07/06 8:06:21 PM” 8:05:36 PM 12/07/06 “I live in Reno, NV, about ninety minutes or so from the Mount Rose/Tahoe Meadows and Spooner Summit trailheads. I could help coordinate water and supply drops, and even come along on part of the trail with you if you are up for that. My profile e-mail address is current.” 8:10:13 PM 12/07/06 “thanks Tahoe! I will keep that in mind! do you recomend that we stash water then?” 8:12:04 PM 12/07/06 “Hey SC, YAAA for you! I can do transport for you guys if you're coming from here, I still have the big ol' LandCruiser - room for lots of gear! I can also pick up stuff for you that you can't fly with, fuel, etc. I also have a garage FULL of gear so maybe keep that in mind, I can lend you some stuff so you don't have to drag everything with you!” 8:14:02 PM 12/07/06 “It is usually pretty dry on the Nevada (east) side of the Rim by October. Going clockwise, once you leave Tahoe City until you get down by Big Meadows most of the water is down off the trail. I would recommend water drops at Brockway Summit trailhead , Mount Rose Summit trailhead, and the Kingsbury trailhead. Spooner Lake is only about 1 mile off the trail so it is easy to get water there. I have friends and family who do these drops for me every now and then so it would not be a problem to coordinate.” 8:17:56 PM 12/07/06 “you guys are great :)!!!” 8:29:20 PM 12/07/06 “tahoe, that website you recomended is great! :)” 8:38:28 PM 12/07/06 “Ok, well, i never got out there in october...lol yikes.... well, next year for sure I am going----in late july or early august (dont know the dates yet) I'm thinking solo----mike doesnt seem to enthused about backpacking 165 miles so I'll go ahead and go solo---- I love that trail. I've done the showers lake section and the desolation section already but I want to do it all in one swoop this time. :) As soon as I get the guide book, I can figure out the dates more soundly. I think I could probleby do this in 12 days---or less if I push it!” 3:07:20 PM 7/22/07 “I've decided for sure, solo. I know of only one person who hikes like I do and i can't pry that person away for two weeks ;). I'm ordering the guide book and maps this weekend. (Plus, we need some backpacking threads in all this crazyness today...) last edited: 7/23/07 6:41:15 PM” 6:40:49 PM 7/23/07 TRT Trail “Anyone that can do the TRT in 5 days is not human. I've done 2 legs; Tahoe City to Brockway summit is an easy 22.6 miles; Kingsbury South to Big meadow is a hard 23.9 miles. That one made me tired and I was just using a day pack. I'm a faily strong hiker and have hiked about 450 miles this year. I will be doing Big Meadow to Echo Lake this Saturday with the Meetup Group. That's only 17.5 miles and looks easier than Tahoe City to Brockway Summit. The next leg is Echo lake to Barker Pass. That one is 32.5 miles. To do that in one day, you would have to start at night, hike all day and finish after dark. The first 16 miles has lots of water but the second half has practically no water for 15 miles. Our Meetup Group wants to backpack that section in a weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.” 12:44:48 PM 7/25/07 “Holy smokes!! Anyone see this? http://www.thepiton.com/2007/07/amazing-but-sad.html Does anyone know if the fire affected the rim trail at all?” 9:48:02 AM 7/26/07 TRT Trail “The trail from Echo Summit to Barker Pass is the only section close to the fire. I looked at the map and it appears the fire didn't touch the TRT in that area. It's all good. Come on out. The weather is great. I'll be on the trail at 7 am Saturday. That's why I live here.” 2:11:36 PM 7/26/07 “Thanks! :) there is nothing worse then hot days hikin' through a recent burn. Enjoy you weekend :)” 2:29:44 PM 7/26/07 “The TRT from Big Meadow to Echo Lake was very easy with lots of wild flowers to look at. The hike was a nice change from the grinder we did 2 weeks ago. The sky was clear blue as well as the water of lake Tahoe. A perfect day for hiking.” 7:39:05 PM 7/28/07 “Yeah I remember that section....how were the mosquitos? last time they were horrendous.” 5:15:28 AM 7/29/07 “The mosquitos were non-existant. Had no problem around the lakes. Maybe it would be bad at night. The daytime was perfect.” 11:09:53 AM 7/29/07 “Lucky-----Last time I did that stretch I didn't have any deet with me----and it was bad. I'm usually a slow hiker, but that day I was VERY FAST. It was a very itchy night in the ol' bag after that lol. I ordered the book and map today---wohoo!” 11:59:45 AM 7/30/07 “If someone were to work out a way that they could get paid to walk this trail would they be able to say they had a rim job?” 12:01:28 PM 7/30/07 “ROFLMAO...... Hmmm...I will be paid during that time! (I gotta love PTO) I can't wait to start planning my solo adventure. Not sure how I will resupply though, guess I'll figure it out. :)” 12:03:59 PM 7/30/07 TRT in 5 days? “Boulderman, After hiking 3 legs of the TRT, I find it impossible to hike 165 miles in 5 days. Much less doing 45 miles in one day. That's 3 MPH for 15 hours straight with no breaks. I did Tahoe City to Brockway Summit in 8.5 hours and that was 22.6 miles. An easy part of the trail. Kingsbury South to Big Meadow is one butt kicking 23.9 miles of steep, long up and down hills that made even the most veteran hikers tired with only day packs. It took us 10.5 hours. Now to do that distance 2 times in one day!? I think someone is blowing smoke up my rear end. Who are these guys!? Olympic athletes? Got any proof? It can't be done!!! No way!!! Not with backpacking gear.” 8:58:33 PM 8/01/07 “Hey Skycall, How ya doing? I'm still planning to do this loop. Just need to plan it on my own outside the meet-up group. Let me know if you want to plan some make-ups. I'll plan on stretching it out over the next year. I have a friend that's done the whole loop in I think a week that wouldn't mind repeating a few of the sections.” 7:05:53 PM 8/02/07 TRT “SongBird, I'm doing great. Just did the Lake Clementine trail with 9 other Meetups. It was great. Last 45 minutes were in the dark. It was fun for everyone! I would like to do TRT #1, the one that ends at Spooner Lake. But any one you want to make up, I'll do with you. We did stop on TRT #3 at 11:45 am and everyone said a little prayer for you while you were on the table. We all missed you. I just can't believe anyone can do the TRT in 5 days backpacking. That's 33 miles a day. Maybe there is someone but that person isn't human. How was JMT?” 10:49:46 PM 8/02/07 “Thanks for the prayers. I got through the surgery like a big baby. (no drugs at all) I told the doc that you guys were thinking of me during the event. He thought that was cool. The TRT #1 was boring. Not much in the way of views and not even one stream. If I were to do that one again, I'd prefer going very early or very late season while maybe some snow was present for interest.??? My resent trip was actually mostly on the PCT and not the JMT. We started in Kennedy Meadows (off 108) and hiked 70 miles to Tuolumne Meadows. It was breathtaking. We hiked between 8 and 16 miles a day depending on the terrain. I don't have the total stats yet but here's my photos. http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/560100746SHXwmK I may try to day hike one day next weekend. Not sure where yet. Are you planning on doing the TRT#5 on the 12th. Maybe I'll do it on the 11th. My next overnighter will most likely be on Labor Day weekend. Not sure where yet but Sat- Mon. Hope you can join.” 7:12:20 AM 8/03/07 TRT #5 “Let's do TRT #1 late this year with some snow or in the spring. I'm signed up on TRT #5 on the 11Th. We got Tod to split them up over 2 days. That would be great to hike it with you. We have a good group; Chris, Sheelagh, Little Debbie (can't remember he last name. She has the broken finger), Deon, Farzad and Laurie that went to Mt. Kilimanjaro. We meet at 4:45 am at Sunsplash. We moved the times up to start in the cool of the morning. Tell me where and when the backpacking trip is. I want to go so I can try out all my new gear. Blue Skies and Happy Trails!!:O)"” 8:10:53 AM 8/03/07 “Nice pictures!!! :)” 10:14:23 AM 8/03/07 “Wohoo! I got my guide book and map in the mail yesterday :) OMG OMG, I didnt order a signed copy , didnt know they had signed copies by the author.....but it is!!! :) COOL! Tim Hauserman must ROCK! last edited: 8/04/07 7:15:47 AM” 7:11:22 AM 8/04/07 “Um, I'll pass this time around. You guys have a great hike though. What if we do the TRT "Echo Lakes to Barker Pass" (32 mile) section during Labor Day weekend. I'm thinking about maybe leaving after work on Friday if possible. Does that work for you? Or if you'd rather do it with the secheduled meet-up group on Sept 8-9th we can plan to go somewhere else on Labor Day weekend. I'm open. I have a couple of people interested in packing with us that weekend as well.” 5:28:49 PM 8/05/07 Echo Lake to Barker Pass “SongBird601, I would be up for Echo Lake to Barker Pass. Then I would have 5 legs done this year. I would rather do it with you and your backpacking buddies. Shall we plan on it? I did Freel Peak Sunday and the views were nothing short of EPIC! A clear, cool day and very windy on top. About as windy as when we went to Round Top. It was an easy hike from Road 51 close to Armstrong Pass.” 8:14:41 AM 8/06/07 “I just got an email from Deon. He wants to pack with us that weekend as well. I'll just make sure he's not planning to do it with the group first. There's so many places we could go I don't want to bore anyone. ;)” 12:34:57 PM 8/06/07 “Keep me posted” 1:24:19 PM 8/06/07 “Deon made a good point about being crowded as well as hard to get permits for that weekend. So I think we'll plan another place altogether. He has Marble Mountain on his list and I have a piece of the JMT on mine. I'll compare them on my Topo program.” 2:42:44 PM 8/06/07 “Where is Marble Mountain?” 3:56:31 PM 8/06/07 “Klamath National Forest no permits required Parking and access are free From interstate 5 at Yreka take the highway 3/Fort Jones exit............ The Marble Mountain Rim trail is 16 miles and is the perfect weekend trip. The route heads up Canyon Creek, a moderate climb, then intersects the PCT at Marble Valley. This area is very scenic, with lots of deer and orchids. The views are stunning, sweeping in both directions, with steep drop-offs adding to the quiet drama. The rock itself is unlike anything else in No Ca, a mix of Black, red, and tan marble, something you'll never forget.” 6:52:47 PM 8/06/07
